Comparing The Top Smartphone Data Plans [Infographic]

Media_httpreadwriteco_bkfhj

Shopping for wireless data plans for your smartphone can be an exercise in banging your head against a wall. Over and over. Does AT&T have the fastest data? How much does Verizon charge for overages? Where, oh where, is my "unlimited" plan? Do these new T-Mobile plans save me money?

Bitcoins Surged 40% In 48 Hours

Media_httpstatic2busi_djogh

Yesterday we noted how the parabolic rise in Bitcoins lately looks a lot like the gold bull market on a chart.

The virtual currency has taken a wild upward turn in just the last 48 hours.

On Monday, Bitcoins were trading around $35. Today, they're up to $49.
That's a 40 percent advance.

How does the HTC One stack up against the competition?

Media_httpassetssbnat_dnbli

HTC has just announced the One, a new flagship Android smartphone for 2013. The HTC One runs Android 4.1.2, but an update to the latest version, Android 4.2, is promised at some point in the future. It has a quad-core Snapdragon 600 running at 1.7GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of onboard storage. It's already been compared to its competition aesthetically — but how do those specs stack up against other flagship models?

Mobile UI Design Inspiration: Charts And Graphs

Media_httpwwwdesignyo_gtizb

Design can be considered a craftsmanship because you do it until you are good at it and then you keep doing it to be better. The problem is that many developers are really eager to solve functionality problems rather than spending time to solve the interface issues.

A mobile designer must embrace minimalism because he will have to limit the features available on each screen and use them efficiently. Of course, the designer must also pay a lot of attention to usability. If a function cannot be found, is to small to notice, or not large enough to be used, the application becomes unusable.

The World Is Going Mobile

Media_httpstatic2busi_nnqbf

here’s no denying that more of us are using mobile devices, and that it’s changing the way we not only communicate, but live. Take a look at the latest presentation by respected venture capitalist Mary Meeker entitled Internet Trends. Here were her top 5, eye-opening stats:

Nearly half of all American kids want an iPad for Christmas

Global mobile traffic now represents roughly 13% of Internet traffic

Nearly a third of all American adults own a tablet or e-reader

There are 5 billion mobile phone users in the world, but only 1 billion smartphone users

Android is growing faster than anything

Chart of the day: How People Share Content on the Web

Media_httpstatic3busi_tzhpk

Despite the spread of thousands of different sharing buttons on the Web, the most popular way to share content is old fashioned copy and paste, according to a study of 17,000 publishers by ad-tech company 33 Across. In the chart below, you can see that 82% of content sharing is done with copy and paste.

What happens after the content is copied and pasted? Business Insider uses 33 Across' Tynt technology to track links. 33 Across provided us with a breakdown of where people are sharing our content. As you can see, email is number one, then Facebook, and then Twitter.

Think about that. Despite the rise of Facebook and Twitter, the most popular way to share content, for Business Insider readers anyway, is copy, paste, email.

(To be clear, the 82% number is based on 17,000 publishers. The break out of what happens is specific to Business Insider. But, Business Insider's ratio of copy and pasting to share buttons is pretty much in line with everyone else, says 33 Across.)

Here's How Many Kickstarter Projects Are Successfully Funded

Media_httpstatic3busi_eebpz

More and more people are posting projects on Kickstarter, hoping to get their business ideas funded by peers.

But that doesn't mean their ideas are finding any more success on the crowdfunding site.
In the past six months, the amount of Kickstarter projects posted has grown 50% to 76,909, GigaOm reports.

Less than half of the projects -- 44% according to a Kickstarter spokesperson -- have successfully meet their monetary goals. And on Kickstarter, it's an all or nothing deal. If posters don't raise the full amount of money they're seeking, they don't see a dime.

When you think about it, 44% is actually a pretty high success rate. The average fundraising on Kickstarter is between $1,000 and $10,000, so it's no small amount of cash that's being swapped between strangers.

In Case You Had Any Doubts About Where Apple's Profit Comes From...

Media_httpstatic2busi_xajti

Last month, I noted that the 5-year-old iPhone is already the most profitable product in the world.

The iPhone, I estimated, is so profitable that it generates more profit than just about any other company on earth, not just product.

The iPhone generates more profit than GE, for example (all of GE). It generates more profit than Microsoft. It generates more profit than Google and Walmart. It generates almost as much profit as Exxon-Mobil!

This Is What 350,000 Websites Look Like

Media_httpimggawkeras_jjaea

Try to picture the internet and you invariably have a hard time. Fortunately, Ruslan Enikeev has decided to help you out by creating a map which organizes websites by popularity and similarity.

The result is The Internet Map. In total, the whole map depicts 350,000 sites and two million links from 196 countries. Each site is represented by a circle, whose size depends on the amount of traffic, and the space between each one is determined by the frequency with which users jump from one to another. Enikeev explains...

Dear America: You Should Be Mad As Hell About This...

Media_httpstatic7busi_obxew

In November, Americans will have a chance to speak their minds.

And there's one thing everyone should agree on:

America just isn't working right now.

It's not just Americans who aren't working. It's America itself, a country whose economy once worked for almost everyone, not just the rich.

In the old America, if you worked hard, you had a good chance of moving up.

In the old America, the fruits of people's labors accrued to the whole country, not just the top.

In the old America, there was a strong middle class, and their immense collective purchasing power drove the economy for decades.

No longer.

Infographic: What Would You Do With An Extra 2 Hours?

Media_httpwwwdomocomb_hbpqk

I’m a big believer in Friday nights and weekends being sacred time for family and fun (see #JJSR 35). Especially during the startup phase, work like a dog during the week, but make sure to carve out time for what matters most. Unfortunately, that model breaks down if too much of the work week is spent doing lame stuff…like looking for information or waiting for reports.

As it turns out, wasting time searching for data is a common problem. In fact, the average information worker spends nearly nine hours each week just looking for information. That’s almost two hours a day!

What would you do if the information you needed was readily available, giving you back part of that two hours every day? Check out this Domo infographic to see some of the most common – and surprising – answers.

How Common Is Your Birthday?

Media_httpimggawkeras_xjfbf

Your birthday! The day you feel like the most special person on the planet! The day you get to do what you want. But don't forget, other people share your birthday too. In fact, a lot of people do. What are the most common birthdays? Check out this snazzy visualization to find out.

The visualization used data from 1973 to 1999 to chart popular birthdays and figured out when the most popular time to pop out babies were. So if you ever thought you were unique, you're not. Especially if you were born in the month of September. Why? Because turns out, a lot of people were born in September. It's the most popular month. I guess the cold winter weather and cheery holiday spirit makes people want to cuddle, snuggle and make babies. September is, after all, nine months after winter.

Chart of who Owns Apple Stock

Media_httpstatic7busi_fdphb

The vast majority of Apple's stock is owned by brokerage accounts -- a whopping 84%.

Hedge fund managers are the next biggest owner, with 7%. Only 1% is owned by individual investors, and another 1% by mutual funds.

These numbers come from Eric Jackson, who dug them up from Bloomberg and shared them on Twitter this morning. They're a few months old.
