Over 1 Billion (Hours) Served: Netflix, Big Cable, And The Innovator’s Dilemma

Media_httptctechcrunc_ptfle

Netflix yesterday announced that its viewers watched over 1 billion hours of video over the course of June, which comes down to about an hour of video per subscriber per day. At the time I wrote about it, I pointed out that chances are, each hour of Netflix viewing means one less hour being watched of regular old live TV.

BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield extrapolated that data and declared Netflix the “most viewed cable network on television.” (Free registration required) It’s an imperfect comparison for a number of reasons, in part due to the number of accounts that Netflix subscribers share per household. But it’s indicative of the shift in attention that’s occurring, as viewers begin to watch less broadcast and cable television, and move toward on-demand shows that are streamed online.

Infographic: What Would You Do With An Extra 2 Hours?

Media_httpwwwdomocomb_hbpqk

I’m a big believer in Friday nights and weekends being sacred time for family and fun (see #JJSR 35). Especially during the startup phase, work like a dog during the week, but make sure to carve out time for what matters most. Unfortunately, that model breaks down if too much of the work week is spent doing lame stuff…like looking for information or waiting for reports.

As it turns out, wasting time searching for data is a common problem. In fact, the average information worker spends nearly nine hours each week just looking for information. That’s almost two hours a day!

What would you do if the information you needed was readily available, giving you back part of that two hours every day? Check out this Domo infographic to see some of the most common – and surprising – answers.

YouTube users upload 72 hours of video every minute

Media_httpgigaom2file_bbgxi

YouTube has seen its video uploads grow 50 percent over the last year: Users are now uploading 72 hours of video every minute, compared to 48 hours just a year ago. The Google-owned video site announced the milestone Sunday night to celebrate its seventh birthday.

The amount of video uploaded to YouTube has increased steadily over the last few years. In early 2007, users were uploading six hours of video every minute to the site. By January of 2009, that number had grown to 15 hours. By March of 2010, the total reached 24 hours, only to go up to 35 hours by November of that year.

Lessons from Sheryl Sandberg: Stop Working More Than 40 Hours a Week

Media_httpwwwinccomup_ipjjl

There's been a flurry of recent coverage praising Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of Facebook, for leaving the office every day at 5:30 p.m. to be with her kids. Apparently she's been doing this for years, but only recently "came out of the closet," as it were.

What's insane is that Sandberg felt the need to hide the fact, since there's a century of research establishing the undeniable fact that working more than 40 hours per week actually decreases productivity.

In the early 1900s, Ford Motor ran dozens of tests to discover the optimum work hours for worker productivity. They discovered that the "sweet spot" is 40 hours a week–and that, while adding another 20 hours provides a minor increase in productivity, that increase only lasts for three to four weeks, and then turns negative.

10 Ways to Find More Hours in Your Day

Media_http1bpblogspot_dkvcx

Just think what you could do with an extra hour or two each day: you could finally stick to an exercise routine, or spring-clean the house, or write your novel, or learn the guitar, or get a new qualification.

I can’t magically make all your days 25 hours long. But I can help you find more hours in your day for the things that really matter.

A laptop battery that lasts for 32 hours

Media_httpibnetcomblo_jypsh

Batteries are perhaps the biggest limiting factor in creating amazing technological advancement. As superhero expert E. Paul Zehr said in this recent interview with Smart Planet: The power source is the biggest challenge in using robotics of the sort worn by Iron Man, “Maybe something innovative will come out of all the work done with electric cars, although you wouldn’t want to lug a 200-pound battery around. So we could very well have a suit that we could control…but if you still have to plug it into the wall? Forget it. That’s not going to work.”

Why Flexible Hours Inspire Performance

Media_httpwwwinccomup_dfbjc

"What time do you want me to start work?" That's the question a new hire recently asked me. She looked a little startled by my reply.

"I don't care."

But it was the truth. I didn't care—and I never have—what hours are kept by the people who work for me. You could say I'm the opposite of a control freak, in the sense that I have always resisted rules, for myself and for others. Why? Because once you have rules, you have to enforce them—and there's no more tedious task in life.
