Pictures like that got a special feeling, somewhat magical. Long exposures are easiest to accomplish in low-light conditions, but can be done in brighter light using neutral density filters or specially designed cameras.

How Long Does It Take To Build A Native Mobile App? [Infographic]

Media_httpreadwriteco_qdbmo

The last several years have seen an explosion in mobile applications. By the end of 2013, both Android’s Google Play and the Apple iOS App Store will be hosting a million apps - and we have only seen minor signs of slowing growth.

Where the heck are all these apps coming from? Thousands upon thousands of developers are working hard to pump out games, social networks, utility and productivity apps, news readers… if you can dream it, someone is building an app for it.

So, how much time and effort is going into feeding this beast? Exactly how long does it take to build a quality native mobile app (not a mobile Web, HTML5 app)? Boston-based Backend-as-a-Service (BaaS) mobile-cloud-platform vendor Kinvey set out to answer just that question.

Long Time Exposure Photography

Media_httpwwwcruzinec_ligaq

Usually shutter of a camera opens only for a fraction of a second just to let enough light fall on the photographic film or an image sensor in case of a digital camera, thus ensuring proper reproduction of the color shades and details of real objects on the photographic image. However, photography is not only a technique of making pictures, but it is also an art of creating authentic fine art works with interesting visual effects. Overexposure is one of the tricks professional photographers use to make excitingly vivid pictures. By opening a shutter for longer and thus letting more light into the chamber, photographers can make really breath-taking photographs, which look especially impressive, if showing flowing water, or cars moving on the night highway.

How Playing Games Makes You Live Longer

Media_http9mshcdncomw_kwejf

It’s easy to write off our gaming addiction as a waste of time. But game designer Jane McGonigal argues the exact opposite; that games can actually extend our life expectancy. And she has the data to support it.

McGonial, who in a previous TED Talk advocated that the world collectively play 21 billion hours of games per week, started her presentation at TED Global on Thursday by citing a widely-circulated study of the most common regrets of people on their death beds.

She then detailed how games address all of them, drawing on her personal experience of suffering a serious concussion that left her unable to do most of the things she loved, like playing video games, reading, writing and caffeine. That left her deeply depressed, to the point where she said “I am either going to kill myself, or I’m going to turn this into a game.”

A laptop battery that lasts for 32 hours

Media_httpibnetcomblo_jypsh

Batteries are perhaps the biggest limiting factor in creating amazing technological advancement. As superhero expert E. Paul Zehr said in this recent interview with Smart Planet: The power source is the biggest challenge in using robotics of the sort worn by Iron Man, “Maybe something innovative will come out of all the work done with electric cars, although you wouldn’t want to lug a 200-pound battery around. So we could very well have a suit that we could control…but if you still have to plug it into the wall? Forget it. That’s not going to work.”
