Social networking came in second, garnering 15% of time spent on the mobile Internet. Interestingly, travel occupied a greater share of time on the mobile Internet (9%) versus the desktop (1%).

How Software Developers Really Spend Their Time
And you thought being a software engineer was all about dreaming up clever algorithms or amazing graphics routines and then instantiating them in elegant, tightly written code. Shows what you know.
It turns out, at least according to a survey conducted by software delivery service Electric Cloud, that developers spend almost 20% of their time... waiting. Waiting for their code to compile (that is, for it to be translated from a programming language like Python or C into a binary machine language computers can execute). Waiting for test routines to finish running. Waiting for that junior developer to get back with the Diet Coke and Funyons...

Should A Logo Be Timeless? - Infographic
We often get asked for a logo design that can stand the test of time. Something that will last forever. I mean, we look at all these “Mega Corporates” and their logos never change. Do they? Well, actually and surprisingly, they do….a lot.
This illustration depicts some of the biggest global brands and highlights the evolution of their logos from humble beginnings to the present day. It might strike you how some of the designs started out looking like their biggest rivals and others appear to of hardly changed at all. Timeless is certainly not the overriding characteristic of most of these early creations.

How To Improve Your Website Load Time
According to a recent research and statistics, it has been learnt that an average user will not have the patience to wait for your website to load. He will not wait for anymore than 3-4 seconds and will move to another website. Also, the website loading time plays a major role in improving any website’s ranking for a search engine. It has also been learnt through a survey that 75% people agreed with the fact that they will not like to revisit any website that takes time to load and for them, 3-4 seconds is too late. If you are a website owner, you must understand that having a fast website is very important for you otherwise your competitors will leave you in the dumps. If your website is slow, do not expect it to have visitors and huge traffic.

How Your Business Can Avoid Extinction
The 2005 film "The March of the Penguins" chronicled the survival challenges faced by emperor penguins. Researchers estimate that only 10 to 20 percent of emperor penguin chicks survive their first year of life in the frigid Antarctic (-40oF, up to 90-mph winds). A one in five first-year survival rate certainly is horrific, and sadly other penguin species also have high mortality rates (by human standards at least).
Yet penguins have adapted to a wide variety of environments, from the extreme cold of Antarctica to the equatorial waters of the Galapagos. The nearly 20 extant penguin species vary in size from 3.3 pounds (Little Blue Penguin) to as much as 99 pounds (Emperor Penguin).
If penguins were a business, we would conclude that they have creatively explored and developed diverse solutions to survive in diverse niches!
Here's how: The extreme "survival of the fittest" mortality rates require penguins to quickly adapt to new or changing environments. The fittest penguins have many opportunities over a long life (20 to 50 years for Emperor Penguins) to pass on their genes. If environmental conditions change, a different mix of parents will successfully procreate the next generation, and the species will thus evolve to adapt and thrive.

Make Every Day More Productive: 6 Tips
My favorite part of any process is the beginning. Or even that moment just before the beginning-;when the whiteboard has yet to be marked, the piece of paper stares back blankly, or the snow is unmarred by footprints I like the first day of school, the start of a new company and, in my business, when a fund has its first closing. It’s a moment of renewal and promise, when anything can happen and everyone is hopeful and positive.
That initial excitement and rush of the new is quickly followed by the need to get things done. As an owner or manager, you understand the importance of maintaining a relentless focus on your company’s productivity. But your personal productivity is just as important. Of course we all want to get things done, but every once in a while, we each need a little help to re-focus. Here are a few pointers...

This Is How Much Time You Spend on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr [Infographic]
News media and television journalism have been instrumental in the shaping of American collective memory for much of the twentieth century. Journalistic influence is growing less important however, as social networking sites like Facebook, YouTube and Twitter provide a constant source of alternative news sources for users. Because of this, and many more factors, we are hooked on social media. Our every day addiction is growing at a fast pace and the following infographic demonstrates valuable numbers for you to ponder. Enjoy!

We spent 230,060 years on social media in one month
The United States spent 121 billion minutes on social media sites in July 2012 alone, according to Nielsen's annual Social Media report. That's 388 minutes — or 6-1/2 hours — per person (if every person in the U.S. used social media). All together, that's 230,060 years we spent staring into the glaring screen of so-called sharing, instead of going outside and playing with our friends, like we're supposed to do in July!

Are You Making This Common Mistake With Your Family When You Work?
For practical reasons, you have set your work-space to be at your kitchen table (that’s where your laptop is).
Since you work before your family wakes up, you are forced to be located in the kitchen: That’s the only available space to do work during those hours of the day.
Although you get your work done when they are still sleeping, it’s a different story when your family is awake.
Since you still keep your laptop in the kitchen, you are kind of mixing two activities together: Working and socializing with your family at the same time.
Even though you are working, you are still giving the impression that you are available for others, since you work in the same space.

Being Trapped Inside This Giant Plastic Space Time Foam Art Installation Looks Like Out of This World Fun
I don't know what I think of this art installation. Sometimes I see a giant alien playground from the future, other times I think it's a sticky membrane web from the inside of some sci-fi monster. Whatever it is, every single time I see a lot of freaking fun.
The installation, called On Space Time Foam by artist Tomas Saraceno, lets people just walk inside, outside and all over the clear plastic film and it's like hiking a plastic mountain with grooves and slides and non stop fun. The floating structure is "composed of three levels of clear film" that hopefully won't tear.

Why Do We Have Daylight Savings Time?
Even though we gained an hour in the morning, awaking to a sunny sky. It will be dark before dinnertime. So why, again, do we do this?
To some degree, we may have Benjamin Franklin to thank.

Watch This Mind Melting Time Lapse That Combines Night and Day in the Same Frame
Here's a wonderful tweak on the always reliable time lapse: splicing night shots and day shots into one single frame. Meaning, you'll sometimes see the buildings at night and the people in the day time or cars at night while the buildings are lit by the sun. It's a visual mind melter.
Created by Philip Stockton, the time lapse is stunning. He used a Canon 5D Mark III, 5D Mark II, and 7D to capture all the footage and spliced together the different shots with months of post production work. He says:

7 Inspiring Examples of Real-Time Marketing in Action
Real-time marketing means reacting in real, or near-real time. It’s about relevant messaging, and it's achieved in social channels by listening to and anticipating customer needs.
Paid media (advertising), earned media (content), and owned media (social and PR) are rapidly converging into just … media. Digital channels have long enabled real time optimization of display advertising, but as social listening and monitoring tools proliferate nearly as quickly as social media channels, real-time matters more to marketers. This is true not just because of social media, but also because social is now what provides the creative impetus for paid and owned media. Based on research my colleague Jeremiah Owyang and I very recently jointly published, the new real-time marketing work cycle looks something like this...

10 Logo Design Tips for a Timeless and Creative Logo
If you think logo design is an easy process, trust me, that’s a misconception. To begin with, a logo is not merely some colors, fonts and fancy lines put together. It is a brand’s identity, to the extent that, more often than not, a logo is more identifiable than the brand’s name! For an entity so important, the design process requires thinking, artistic inputs and systematic planning. In other words, you don’t simply sit down and draw a logo while watching your favorite anime series.
