These Darkened Cities image series by Thierry Cohen is truly awe inspiring. Not only because he accurately portraits the skylines of major cities with no lighting whatsoever, but because the images remind us of the incredible show we city dwellers are missing every night.
To make these images, Cohen travelled to places far away from the cities but on the same latitude. While LA, San Francisco or Rio de Janeiro are buzzing with gigawatts of electricity, locations like Joshua Tree National park, the Mojave Desert, and the Amazon are completely dark. They see the exact same skies as their urban counterparts, just separated by some time, as Earth rotates on its axis. Cohen photographed and combined these skies with images of the cities, treated so they looked as though they were illuminated only by the stars. The result is what you see here.

Created by Philip Stockton, the time lapse is stunning. He used a Canon 5D Mark III, 5D Mark II, and 7D to capture all the footage and spliced together the different shots with months of post production work. He says:

When the sky goes darker, do not keep your camera quietly inside your bag. It is the beginning for another set of awesome night photography pictures. Night shots are doubtless challenging task but it produces beautiful night photography that will hold your breath.
Believe in the night effect, and you will set the stunning output of an object or a country. It shows the magic of light on a city. Witness a building in day and night will let you know the great contrast. In night shots, there are actually several light sources such as moon light. Nonetheless, they are weak so that you have to make use of artificial lightning such as flash or play with the camera settings.
