Media_httpcdntechicom_fayjz

Television is one of the most popular forms of entertainment in the world, if not the most popular. Billions of hours of television are watched around the world every day. However, as much as people love television, they don’t love how complex and inconvenient the linear television experience is...

Microsoft's next Xbox will take over your TV, interact with your cable box

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_ayawp

Microsoft is investing in TV in a big way with its next Xbox console as part of a fight for the living room. Multiple sources familiar with the company's Xbox plans have revealed to The Verge that Microsoft will introduce a feature that lets its next-generation console take over a TV and set-top box in a similar way to Google TV. We understand that the next Xbox will require an online connection to use the entertainment services, allowing them to be always-on for streaming and access to TV signals.

The functionality will work by taking a cable box signal and passing it through to the Xbox via HDMI, allowing Microsoft's console to overlay a UI and features on top of an existing TV channel or set-top box. We're told that this is a key part of the next-generation Xbox and that it will go a step further than Google's TV implementation thanks to Microsoft's partnerships with content providers. Extended support for various cable services will be rolled out gradually, but the basic functionality will be available at launch.

Media_httpbetaimagest_hnzka

Rdio, the music streaming service started by a co-founder of Skype, is getting into video.

It’s opening at first to users in the U.S. and Britain, where current subscribers of a $10-a-month unlimited music plan from Rdio will get $25 to spend in the new digital store for video, called Vdio.

The content will work on personal computers and Apple’s iPad for now. The latest TV episodes from shows such as The Walking Dead will sell for about $3 each and will be in high definition, while movies such as Zero Dark Thirty will cost from $3 to rent to $20 to buy.

Apple IS Working On A TV, And It Could Be Ready By Year End

Media_httpstatic4busi_bljla

Apple is still working on a TV, and it could be ready by the end of this year, though it's more likely to come at the start of 2014, say DigiTimes reporters Julian Ho and Alex Wolfgram.

According to their "industry supply chain sources" the TV "is likely" to support Ultra HD, or 4K, which is the next generation of high definition. They also hear it will have voice and motion controls.

Previously, Peter Misek at Jefferies reported Apple was looking to get TV panels that are close to 4K quality without the 4K cost.

Samsung's S9 Ultra HD 4K HDTV looks like a bargain at $40,000

Media_httpicdn1digita_zoegg

If nothing else, you have to give Samsung credit for the gutsy PR move it pulled off yesterday in lower Manhattan. The Internet has been abuzz since the company decided to preview its $40,000 85-inch Ultra HDTV to members of the press who were probably just happy to be inside where it was warm and they could gawk at swimsuit model, Kate Upton. $40,000 is an incredibly huge sum of money to plunk down on a TV, especially when one could build a complete, high-performance home theater system for that amount. Perhaps we’ve become more frugal after the past four years of recession, or maybe we just have our priorities ordered a little differently. Regardless, for all the uproar surrounding the S9′s pricing, it is not the most expensive TV ever marketed; not by a long shot.

At first glance, the pricing on the Samsung S9 Ultra HDTV understandably seems more than just a little steep. Even for a first-generation panel that admittedly would be right at home at the Museum of Modern Art due to its sheer sense of modernism and style. Unfortunately, Samsung’s new toy is getting a lot of attention right now because of its price and, sadly, not because it looks absolutely amazing with native 4K content. In many ways, the S9 launch and post-event hysteria that would have made CNBC’s Rick Santelli proud is burying more important stories like Samsung’s new line-up of plasma HDTVs, which not only looked amazing, but very well may be the final nails in Panasonic’s coffin...

This Is The Future Of TV

Rich Greenfield, the BTIG analyst who’s something of a digital media oracle, isn’t exaggerating when he says, “The future of television has begun” (registration required). Click play on the video above for a brief tour of what has him so excited.

The service is Time Warner Cable’s new application for Roku set-top boxes. It allows TWC subscribers to view live and on-demand programming on any screen with a Roku connected to it. If that didn’t exactly blow your mind, here’s why it should:

∙ In the future of television, the set-top box is king. Screens will be increasingly plentiful, and turning them into full-fledged internet and media devices—what we used to call “computers”—is already pretty easy. Small set-top devices like the brand-new Roku 3, which costs $99, are all you need to get programming onto a television screen.

That’s why people increasingly think Apple’s much-anticipated “television” will actually be two products: a high-resolution screen and a set-top box similar to the existing Apple TV. Then the question is simply, what is the set-top box capable of doing? And, obviously, playing television shows is just a small part of the answer to that question.

YouTube iOS App Now Beams Video to Your TV

Media_httpimggawkeras_foioq

YouTube's iOS app has been updated with the "send to TV" feature that lets you beam videos wirelessly to your television from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Here's how it works: Make sure your TV and your iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network, then tap the TV icon at the top of your screen to sling the video. From there, you can control playback or pick something different to watch and everyone with an iOS device on the network can join in to create playlists, too. See how it works here. But more importantly, you can pair with your PS3 or Xbox though, you need to do so manually.

Samsung takes on Apple TV with the HomeSync media streamer

Media_httpcdn2sbnatio_gqcht

The news from MWC is already starting to break: along with the Galaxy Note 8.0, Samsung has also introduced a new living room device called the HomeSync. On one hand, it's a media streamer that hooks up to your television and lets users stream photos, videos, and apps from their Galaxy devices to their television — at 1080p resolution. However, it's also a storage device unto itself with a 1TB drive for storing content.

This Apple TV Concept Video Raises A Big Question About The Very Idea Of An Apple TV

Thanks to countless reports from analysts and others, we've all been expecting an Apple TV for a while now.

These days, Apple shareholders in particular would love to see one come out.

The smartphone market is pretty saturated now, and Apple needs another category to dominate.

But maybe we should all temper our enthusiasm.

A Russian Apple blogger just made a showing off his concept for an Apple TV. (A French Apple blogger spotted it.)

Yes, Intel Is Building a Web TV Service (A Box, Too)

It was a poorly kept secret to begin with, but now it has finally been revealed: Intel is indeed developing an Internet TV service, and a set-top box to boot.

Speaking at D: Dive Into Media Tuesday, Erik Huggers, corporate vice president at Intel Media, confirmed rumors that have been circulating for months.

“We have been working for about a year now to set up a group called Intel Media,” Huggers said “It’s a new division with new people — people [we've hired] from Apple, Netflix and Google. And it’s devoted to developing an Internet television platform.”

That group’s mandate: Build the best Internet television service ever.

4K Ultra HD may fill the void that 3D never could

Media_httpcdntechicom_hzxis

Two years ago, 3D televisions and computer displays were going to be the technological advancement that changed the game. It didn’t. If flopped. It went from being a huge part of CES 2011 to a no-show at CES 2013.

The “next big thing” that did make a stout appearance at CES 2013 was 4K Ultra HD. Several companies put their latest display technology front and center at the show, boasting of four times the visual quality of 1080P HD. If the video below and article by Matt Buchanan at Buzzfeed are true, this game changer might actually change the game… for real this time.

Let's talk about 4K televisions

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_kzglr
via www.gadgetell.com">technologytell.com

Every CES has an unofficial theme. These themes are born from companies that want to prove their cutting edge products are better than the competition. This year, 4K televisions were a central part of the show. Sony couldn’t stop gloating about its 4K TVs during its press conference, and Samsung took much pride in unveiling its 110-inch Ultra HD television. While seeing these televisions in person is a sight to behold, I can’t help but feel televisions like these are dead on arrival.
