30 Extremely Detailed iOS Icons Which Will Definitely Capture Your Attention

Media_httpwwwtopdesig_ugicz

I always believe that a good and functional design is the one which takes into consideration even the minor aspects. Sure, the icon is not a minor detail but unfortunately many of the software developers thinks that because why should you spend your time designing a small icon which if only clicked once in the app running cycle?

Well, an icon acts like a business card: if it’s great, the user will love it and his first impression will be accordingly. Having a nice icon means that you really care about your application and you have invested into quality, so I strongly recommend you to not ignore this little detail. Even more, if you are planning to create an app for iOS, you should know that Apple users are extremely picky when it comes to quality, so it’s very hard to impress them. Below you can see a collection of 30 very detailed examples of iOS icons which are attracting user’s attention.

Yahoo! Unveils Brand New iOS App, Including Built-In Summly Summaries

Media_httptctechcrunc_bviib

Yahoo! acquired startup Summly for somewhere around $30 million just one month ago, but it’s already bearing fruit. First, there was the Summly summarized version of its Q1 2013 earnings last week, and now there’s a brand new flagship Yahoo! iOS application out today (for U.S. users only for now) with Summly summaries built right in.

The Summly acquisition attracted a lot of attention, in part because it was helmed by 17-year old Nick D’Aloisio, and because part of its technology was based on a licensing arrangement with SRI, the same company that originally spawned Siri, Apple’s virtual voice-powered assistant software. It’s been speculated that gaining access to that license in part motivated the acquisition.

Media_httprack3mshcdn_gtgkb

Google has updated its YouTube iOS app to version 1.3, with the most notable improvement being support for live streaming.

Oddly enough, the update comes right after Coachella, which was streamed to YouTube this weekend. There's always next year, we guess.

Apple patents proximity-based iOS to OS X file transfer technology

Media_httpicdn6digita_wdbrb

MacBook, iPhone, iPad: Apple’s trifecta of products. Out of those three, you’re probably more inclined to bring the iPhone and iPad everywhere with you. You take pictures with your iPhone, type documents on your iPad, or create and edit videos on either. These days, to transfer content from your mobile devices to your computer, you have no choice but to rely on cloud services, or to email the files to yourself. Apple has PhotoStream that makes things a bit easier, but, according to AppleInsider, a newly filed Apple patent will make transferring files from an iPhone or iPad to a MacBook much more convenient.

Apple and Yahoo reportedly in talks to build a deeper iOS partnership

Media_httpcdn0sbnatio_nviug

Apple is in talks with Yahoo to bring more of the search company's data to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, reports The Wall Street Journal. Yahoo has long been one of the data providers for iOS devices — the default stocks and weather apps pull data from Yahoo, and Siri uses the company for things like sports statistics as well. Now, the companies are discussing ways to get more Yahoo data, including expanded sports data and content from Yahoo News onto iOS, presumably through Siri or other built-in apps.

iPhone 5S Rumor Roundup: Everything We Think We Know

Media_httpicdn6digita_lmylf

The build up to the launch of a new iOS device is always paved with rumors, speculation, and mostly unfulfilled promises. Every year the tech world and the regular world collectively obsess over Apple’s newest device as images leak and insiders report.

If Apple’s typical naming scheme is to be trusted, we can basically guarantee we’ll be seeing the latest iPhone carry the title of 5S. Though some say this will only be one of three models set to launch in 2013. All signs point to a nearly identical design on the outside with all the changes taking place under the hood. From there, the rumors range from absurd to virtually certain and we try to tell you which is which along the way.

iOS 7 reportedly behind schedule, but will come with a new look

Media_httpcdn0sbnatio_ynlud

Back when we learned that Apple’s VP of industrial design, Jony Ive, would be leading human interface development across the entire company, many hoped it would mean some big changes for iOS, after years of iterations that appeared minor compared with the major overhaul of Android 4.0 and beyond. With the Worldwide Developer Conference looming just months away, all eyes are on iOS 7, and according to Daring Fireball’s John Gruber, the push to meet its development targets is requiring the company to repurpose resources from the OS X team.

Who’s really winning between iOS and Android?

Media_httpcdntechicom_dgjcc

This is one of the silliest questions that constantly gets asked on tech blogs and is often answered by infographics. The truth is this: nobody really cares. It’s a personal choice. Some are extremely loyal to the brand or operating system that they prefer. Most are open to whatever makes the most sense to them.

Still, the question will be asked and blogs will attempt to answer it. Which major mobile operating system is winning the war, iOS or Android? Here’s another shot at answering the question, looking at some of the important numbers including activations, fragmentation, and owner satisfaction. Will these numbers sway you or anybody else? Probably not. Are the good to use as justification for one or the other? Probably so.

New PayPal mobile SDK lets iOS users pay within third-party apps

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_hfwtc

PayPal is updating its developer options today, launching a mobile SDK that will let app makers build in PayPal payment. Starting on iOS and expanding later to other platforms, users will be able to make purchases directly through apps, either by entering information through a PayPal form or by scanning a credit card through camera-based payment tool Card.io. In cases involving subscriptions or in-app goods, that could mean payments are subject to Apple's 30 percent fee; in other cases — like apps selling physical goods — they would likely be exempt.

Quantifying Quality: Ranking The Top 60 Apps In iOS & Android

Media_httpreadwriteco_dsphc

When app quality analytics service Applause was launched at the end of January, it caused a bit of a firestorm when it used an algorithmic analysis of inherently subjective data to quantify iOS and Android app quality. And you know what it revealed? People think that iOS apps are better than Android.

That assertion alone was enough to send the local chapter of the iPhone or Android Fan Boy Clubs into a fit of glee or burbling rage, depending on the allegiance.

The company behind Applause, Boston-based uTest, took the reaction to heart. As a response, Applause is launching the Applause Index, a daily look at its rankings for 60 of the top apps that can be found on both iOS and Android.

When ReadWrite had Applause run the data on all iOS and Android apps in January, one argument (among many) was that the sample apps we had Applause specifically dig into were not representative of the entire body of work of each app store. So, Applause disassembled the sample for the Applause Index, making sure that there was basically 100% overlap between iOS and Android for the indices. Applause also broke apps down in to sub-categories so people could take a closer look at how top apps in categories like Productivity, Games, Entertainment, Travel, Sports, Content and so on compare.

YouTube iOS App Now Beams Video to Your TV

Media_httpimggawkeras_foioq

YouTube's iOS app has been updated with the "send to TV" feature that lets you beam videos wirelessly to your television from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.

Here's how it works: Make sure your TV and your iOS device are on the same Wi-Fi network, then tap the TV icon at the top of your screen to sling the video. From there, you can control playback or pick something different to watch and everyone with an iOS device on the network can join in to create playlists, too. See how it works here. But more importantly, you can pair with your PS3 or Xbox though, you need to do so manually.

Apple iPhone Update Will Kill Jailbreak

Media_httpstatic3busi_xggca

Apple is working on an update to its iOS software for iPhones and iPads that will likely prevent users from jailbreaking their phones, according to Forbes.

The news comes from one of the developers who made the popular jailbreaking tool called Evasi0n, which lets users hack the newest version of iOS.

Apple's upcoming update apparently plugs the hole that Evasi0n uses to jailbreak iPhones and iPads running iOS 6. Developers are already testing the new version of iOS, so it'll likely launch within a few weeks.

Kickstarter Goes Mobile With New iOS App

Media_https2wpcomwpco_ewlfd

It’s Valentine’s Day and what better way for a crowdfunding site to show its love for you than release an iOS app? The new app will go live on iTunes shortly and allows users to follow their funded projects and search for new projects from the comfort of their iOS device. No word on an Android version yet.

“The app is a whole new way to experience Kickstarter. We took things we’ve learned from the past three years of building the site, and applied them to a total redesign for the iPhone,” wrote Yancey Stickler, CEO.

The app allows you to find and fund projects on your mobile and browse projects based on popularity and category. You can also follow the projects you’ve funded once you’ve logged in using your Kickstarter account.

iOS 6.1 Security Risk: Anyone Can Bypass Your iPhone's Lock Screen

Media_httpimggawkeras_ardqz

So, iOS 6.1 hasn't been Apple's finest hour. So far it's been plagued with connection issues, battery woes, and now it's sadly insecure, too. You can bypass any lockcode on an iPhone using this straightforward sequence of button presses.

The instructions are pretty simple. First you have to pretend to turn the phone off, then make an aborted emergency call, then a quick bit of off button and cancel pressing. That boots you into the full phone app where you can pretty much call or message anyone you like, or edit phone contacts.

A Jailbreak for iOS 6.1.1 Is Already Here

Media_httpimggawkeras_pkwed

iOS 6.1.1 was released yesterday, and there's already a jailbreak available for it. The Evasi0n jailbreak tool which hit the internet last week has been updated to v1.3, and it will now liberate everything.

As Redmond Pie notes, the 6.1.1 update wasn't really about patching up the new iPhone 5 jailbreak—it was about fixing cellular issues experienced by iPhone 4S users of iOS 6.1. The Evasi0n tool update fixes several bugs present in the last version, and will work for folks on 6.1.1. Here's a link to the latest version of the tool for Mac and Windows. For more info on jailbreaking your device, check out our comprehensive guide.

iOS 6.1.1 rolling out for the iPhone 4S

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_ajbpe

Well, iOS 6.1 is still pretty young, but 6.1.1 is already hitting the airwaves. At least for some iPhone 4S owners that is. We've been able to confirm availability of the upgrade on multiple 4S handsets, but have not seen it yet on an iPod touch or any other iPhone model. The notification screen does specifically call out the update as fixing issues relating to "cellular performance and reliability" on the iPhone 4S, so it's quite likely the update will be for that device only. While better signal reliability would be a welcome upgrade, the bug we've heard the most complaints about is the seriously diminished battery life under 6.1...
