New PayPal mobile SDK lets iOS users pay within third-party apps

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_hfwtc

PayPal is updating its developer options today, launching a mobile SDK that will let app makers build in PayPal payment. Starting on iOS and expanding later to other platforms, users will be able to make purchases directly through apps, either by entering information through a PayPal form or by scanning a credit card through camera-based payment tool Card.io. In cases involving subscriptions or in-app goods, that could mean payments are subject to Apple's 30 percent fee; in other cases — like apps selling physical goods — they would likely be exempt.

Microsoft Releases Windows Phone 8 SDK

Microsoft has released the Windows Phone 8 SDK for the Build developer conference, now taking place on the Redmond campus.

The SDK is described as an environment “for building apps and games for Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.5.” That’s pretty obvious but why 7.5? That’s the odd thing here.

It has a stand-alone Visual Studio Express 2012 edition. It can also work as an add-on to Visual Studio Express 2012 edition for Windows Phone or works as an add-in to Visual Studio 2012 Professional, Premium or Ultimate editions. Microsoft says the SDK also includes emulators and additional tools for profiling and testing a Windows Phone app under real-world conditions.

iOS 6 SDK's Auto Layout Hints At Larger iPhone Screen

Media_httpstatic5busi_hhjzj

The beta version of Apple's new mobile operating system, iOS 6, has been in developers' hands for about a week now. As they begin to pick apart iOS 6, we're learning a lot more about Apple's future plans for iPhones and iPads.

Aside from all the cool new user-facing features such as Facebook integration and the new 3D maps app, TechCrunch points out one addition that could hint at Apple's plans for a new iPhone with a larger screen.

It's called Auto Layout, a new tool for iPhone and iPad developers that helps them adjust their apps for different types of screen layouts. For example, if you're making an app with multiple language support, Auto Layout will help make sure navigation buttons, and other design elements are placed correctly.

Apple To Open Up SDK For Apple TV Apps

Media_httpstatic7busi_xaqdj

Apple will open up its Apple TV to third-party apps at its big developers conference next week, BGR reports.

Rumblings of Apple TV apps began a few days ago when Daring Fireball's John Gruber noticed Apple may be planning sessions for developers.

If the reports are true, we probably won't see third-party Apple TV apps until this fall, when the next version of iOS is expected to launch. (The Apple TV runs iOS, just like the iPhone and iPad.)
