Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_lkamm

BlackBerry just confirmed to us the target pricing of its upcoming QWERTY smartphone in the US, and the quick takeaway is that keyboards don't come cheap. According to company representatives, the Q10 is intended to be sold for $249 on a two-year contract, which positions it as more expensive than the Galaxy S 4, iPhone 5, One and Z10.

Apple Says It Has No New Products Coming Until The Fall

Media_httpstatic4busi_ibhfb

CEO Tim Cook was unusually open during Apple's earnings call about plans for the future.

During his scripted remarks, he told analysts that Apple has amazing new hardware and software services in development, but they won't be introduced until the fall and throughout 2014.

He was asked about it again during the Q&A with analysts, and repeated himself saying, "We will have some really great stuff in the fall and all across 2014."

You Won't Be Able To Wear Google Glass Until Next Year

Media_httpstatic1busi_ehauv

Google Glass won't be coming to the market this year after all.

We first saw the news on DVICE.

Even though Google has previously said it expects to release a fully-polished version of its computerized glasses by the end of the year, that no longer seems to be the case.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said Glass will not be made available to the general public until sometime next year.

The HTC One is available nationwide today

Media_httpicdn1digita_uikdb

Starting today, the One – HTC’s latest flagship smartphone – is available online and in physical stores all across the United States.

The list of retailers that will carry the One is quite comprehensive: AT&T, Sprint, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Walmart, Target, Amazon.com, Costco, Car Toys, Sam’s Club, HSN.com, and HTC.com. Looks like HTC is safeguarding against anymore problems with the One’s availability. But if HTC has enough units to fill orders from all these retailers, it would seem the supply issues have been ironed out.

The One is an impressive piece of hardware, we came away thoroughly impressed by its physical features. Specifically applauding the phone’s attractive design, crisp 1080p display, superior audio quality, and speedy performance. Unfortunately, the sealed-in battery, underdeveloped BlinkFeed, and some issues with it running hot left a bad taste in our mouth. Not to say it’s a bad phone, just not our absolute favorite...

LinkedIn releases redesigned iPhone and Android app with big, bright news stories

Media_httpcdn3sbnatio_brvhc

Today LinkedIn is releasing an overhauled iPhone and Android app, as well as a matching mobile website, all with a cleaner, sleeker layout that makes it much easier to navigate. The company's old design featured a sequence of nonstop gray blocks that were packed with information, but now LinkedIn is replacing those with big and bright tiles that give more room to each of the stories in the news stream, similar to the iPad app that it released last year. Larger photos and text fill up every story, and each update is separated by a simple break between the tiles. The new app also replaces the previous version's icon-based navigation menu with a left-hand sliding pane, which includes personalized shortcuts and generally lets users move around the app more quickly.

Facebook Home Will Be Available To Download On April 12 In The Play Store

Media_httptctechcrunc_ggwal

Today at the Facebook phone event, the company unveiled Facebook Home, an Android “app” that will change your home screen and core features. It will be released in the Play Store in about a week on April 12, with an update coming every month.

When it comes to tablets, the company said that it will come eventually. In “several months,” tablet users will be able to install Facebook Home, assuming that you are using an Android tablet. Facebook simply said that the tablet experience “was not done yet.”

“We think this will be a really great way to experience home on facebook in tablets,” the company said. Releasing Facebook Home in the Play Store is a key element in Facebook’s strategy.

iPhone 5S with improved camera and faster processor could launch in Q3, report says

Media_httpicdn6digita_bqeea

Now that the dust has settled following the recent launch of Samsung’s new flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone, it’s time to once again check on how the iPhone rumor mill is doing. Listen carefully and….yes….it’s still turning.

Taiwan-based tech publication DigiTimes, which has a hit-and-miss record with its tidbits surrounding upcoming iterations of Apple’s popular handset, on Thursday reported that components for the next-generation iPhone will begin shipping towards the end of May, with the handset – expected to be called the iPhone 5S – lined up for a Q3 2013 launch.

Citing sources “from the upstream supply chain”, DigiTimes said the new handset would not receive a “major” upgrade and is therefore likely to be a “slightly enhanced” version of the iPhone 5.

BlackBerry CEO Expects 100,000 Apps To Be Available In Time For BlackBerry 10′s U.S. Debu

Media_httptctechcrunc_wcitb

BlackBerry’s first BlackBerry 10 smartphone is about to make its official U.S. consumer debut in just a few days, and the long wait has seen the size of the platform’s app selection swell considerably. According to an interview with BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins conducted by the Australian Financial Review, Heins expects the BlackBerry World content portal to cross the 100,000 app mark in time for the company’s big Z10 smartphone launch later this week.

It’s a notable (if not entirely significant — there’s an argument for quality over quantity) milestone, and one that BlackBerry may be trying to highlight ahead of its fiscal Q4 2013 earnings release on March 28. That’s a sizable jump from the roughly 70,000 apps that debuted along with BlackBerry 10, but the platform still needs support from big-name developers and services if it wants to pose a credible threat to Apple and Google’s mobile hegemony.

Report: Sprint Will Get an All-Touchscreen BlackBerry That's Not the Z10

Media_httpedgecachegi_cbsca

We already heard that Sprint would launch BlackBerry's (maybe) QWERTY savior the Q10 sometime this year, but the company has bee very silent about the new flagship Z10, even as each AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile have all have already announced plans. Now, ATD reports that Sprint will get an all-touch screen phone that's not the Z10. Say what?

BlackBerry’s Z10 Will Make Its AT&T Debut On March 22 For $199, Pre-Orders Kick Off Tomorrow

Media_httptctechcrunc_bpsbw

Just days after Bloomberg ran a report claiming that AT&T would release BlackBerry’s long-awaited Z10 smartphone on March 22, AT&T has issued a statement confirming that launch will indeed go forward as reported. Prospective BlackBerry owners will have to shell out $199 for the Canadian company’s new flagship and (for better or worse) sign a two year contract.

In the event that you absolutely need to have one (a sentiment that our own Darrell Etherington didn’t share in his full review), AT&T will kick off the pre-order process starting tomorrow, March 12.

This makes AT&T the second of the three major U.S. wireless carriers to announce availability for the Z10 — T-Mobile announced late last week that its business customers would be able to get their hands on the device starting today, though it remained decidedly mum when it came to general consumer availability. Verizon on the other hand is widely expected to push BlackBerry’s Z10 out the door sometime in April, and Sprint has decided to focus solely on the QWERTY keyboard-packing Q10 (see our hands-on impressions here).

BlackBerry Z10 Said to Hit AT&T Stores March 22 for U.S.

Media_httpwwwbloomber_dbdtg

BlackBerry’s new Z10 device will go on sale with AT&T Inc. (T) on March 22 as the Canadian smartphone maker seeks a sales recovery in its biggest market, according to two people familiar with the plan.

The touch-screen phone will begin appearing in U.S. stores that day, said the people, who asked not to be named because no release date has been announced.

BlackBerry, which gets about one-fifth of revenue from the U.S., is counting on the Z10 to revive its brand’s appeal against more popular rivals led by Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone. While the device has won praise from U.S. technology critics and will have already debuted in 21 countries at the end of this week, American consumers have had to wait because their carriers have longer testing periods for phones.

iPhone 5S Rumors Point To August Release, iPad In April

Media_httpreadwriteco_ggevt

The iPhone and iPad rumor mills have become a tired and played out annual rite of the gadget wars. When are they coming? What will they look like? Apple rumors are big business, even when they are horribly inaccurate.

The latest rumors making the circuit concern the timing of Apple releases for the fifth-generation iPad and the so-called iPhone “5S.” According to Rene Ritchie from Apple-centric blog iMore, we could see the next iPads coming in April. The iPhone 5S is likely scheduled for late summer, probably August.

Apple’s ‘iWatch’ Will Launch This Year

Media_httpwwwbloomber_ulcbc

While Tim Cook has dropped hints that Apple Inc. (AAPL) is hard at work on a television to drive the next era of growth, the company’s wristwatch-style device, still in development, may prove more profitable.

The global watch industry will generate more than $60 billion in sales in 2013, said Citigroup Inc. analyst Oliver Chen. While that’s smaller than the pool of revenue that comes from TVs, gross margins on watches are about 60 percent, he said. That’s four times bigger than for televisions, according to Anand Srinivasan, a Bloomberg Industries analyst.

Apple, with its iconic brand and lucrative retail network, is poised to tap into the growing watch industry. Headway in the business would help compensate for slowing growth in other areas, such as iPhones and iPods. Apple’s stock has slumped by more than a third since peaking in September on signs of accelerating competition led by Samsung Electronics Co. (005930) and concern over how quickly Chief Executive Officer Cook is pushing into new products.

“This can be a $6 billion opportunity for Apple, with plenty of opportunity for upside if they create something totally new like they did with the iPod -- something consumers didn’t even know they needed,” said Chen, who covers luxury- goods retailers.

The TV industry will generate $119 billion in sales this year, according to market-research firm IHS Electronics & Media. Using Chen’s margin estimates, a 10 percent share for Apple in each market would mean gross profit of $3.6 billion for watches, outstripping $1.79 billion for TVs.

Three Rules for Creating the Perfect Press Release

Media_httpinspiration_uqope

Press releases are often eclipsed by new and exciting digital tools, but remain a solid way for brands and businesses of all shapes and sizes to get a message out. The dawn of digital has also had a profound effect upon their creation and distribution – effectively lowering the bar for accessibility in creating and distributing releases. However, as a side-effect – the competition to get releases in front of the eyeballs that matter has increased exponentially. So how can you navigate the perils of press releases and prevent yours from being drowned out?

Leap Motion To Begin Shipping In May

Media_httpreadwriteco_diehu

Leap Motion, the flash drive-sized controller that lets you manipulate your computer's interface with a multitude of precise hand gestures, will begin shipping to customers who pre-ordered the device on May 13. In a partnership with Best Buy, the Leap Motion controller will also hit physical store shelves in the U.S. starting May 19.

Since the company's founding last year, Leap Motion has advertised its product as a life-changing technological jump toward intuitive 3D software, while drawing in developers who will shortly offer a impressive suite of apps with functionality ranging from gaming and art to web browsing and 3D modeling. All these apps will be available in Leap Motion's new app store, Airspace, says Leap Motion VP of Product Marketing Mike Zagorsek.

Starting with the sci-fi-influenced idea that computing of the future will be done seamlessly with hand gestures alone (think Minority Report), CEO Mike Buckwald and CTO David Holz co-founded Leap Motion with the aim of delivering a truly futuristic product. They predict that this kind of interface could change the way we interact with technology forever, from kitchen screens at McDonald's to electronic music-creation tools for DJs, as ReadWrite editor in chief Dan Lyons wrote last December.

Internet Explorer 10 now available for Windows 7 users

Media_httpcdn2sbnatio_yapef

Developers have had early access to Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 for a few months now, but Microsoft is making the final release available to consumers and businesses today. Available in 95 languages, Windows 7 users will be auto upgraded to IE10 in the coming weeks, with the initial push targeted at IE10 Release Preview users.

Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 7 includes improved JavaScript performance, and a focus on battery life improvements for mobile PCs. Although Internet Explorer 10 has been available on Windows 8 since October 26th, Microsoft opted for a delayed Windows 7 schedule to ensure the release was fully ready, a decision that drew some criticism from users waiting on an updated browser.

Windows 7 users will now get integrated spell checking and auto-correct within IE10, as well as improved support for web standards like the latest CSS3 improvements. The user interface in IE10 for Windows 7 is largely the same as IE9, so users won't get the fullscreen experience that's available in Windows 8. Nevertheless, Internet Explorer 10 is now available to download for Windows 7.

Sony Releases New Cameras, Including Mirrorless and DSLR

Media_httpfstoppersco_fjhto

Sony has had a busy morning, with the release of five new cameras including three Cyber-shot point-and-shoots, a new mirrorless in the NEX-3N and a new 20.1 megapixel DSLR in the SLT-A58, the last of which is priced incredibly competitively at just under $600.

Sony’s camera offerings all appear to be aimed at consumers, but if you’re like me, you do like to have a Canon Rebel level camera at your side as a third camera or for video. What Sony is doing with the DSLR for under $600 (and that’s with a kit lens) appears to be really well priced, and likely is a move to try and leverage some market share. Really, all the new cameras here are extremely well priced. I’m curious to see what the market acceptance of this consumer line will be.
