How The iPad Totally Changed The World In Just Three Years

Media_httpstatic2busi_dzkza

Apple's iPad was released to the world three years ago on April 3, 2010.

At the time, a lot of people were underwhelmed. We even called it a "big yawn," and said, "Jobs introduced something that is probably going to sell in the range of a few million units this year, much closer to one of the company's Macs than its runaway hits like the iPod and iPhone. Not the company's next huge growth story."

Oops. We got that one very wrong!

In the three years since the iPad launched, it's changed everything. It truly was a revolutionary device. Here's a quick run down.

Surface Vs iPad Hilarious Video

Media_httpstatic2busi_afqni

Last summer, Microsoft revealed its long-awaited so-called "iPad killer," the Surface RT tablet.

Since it began shipping in October, the Surface hasn't killed the Pad. As far as we can tell, it hasn't even bruised the iPad.

But the Surface launch press conference did lead to this really funny video produced by ReadWriteWeb.

iPhone 5S Rumors Point To August Release, iPad In April

Media_httpreadwriteco_ggevt

The iPhone and iPad rumor mills have become a tired and played out annual rite of the gadget wars. When are they coming? What will they look like? Apple rumors are big business, even when they are horribly inaccurate.

The latest rumors making the circuit concern the timing of Apple releases for the fifth-generation iPad and the so-called iPhone “5S.” According to Rene Ritchie from Apple-centric blog iMore, we could see the next iPads coming in April. The iPhone 5S is likely scheduled for late summer, probably August.

Is This Apple's iPad Mini 2?

Media_httpstatic4busi_btdad

A few new leaked images of what could be the casing for Apple's next iPad Mini are being passed around today.

The images show a device with a similar design as the current iPad Mini, but a little thicker, presumably to make room for a larger battery to power a high-resolution Retina display.

We first spotted the photos on Ubergizmo, but the leak comes from a Chinese forum called WeiPhone.

How To Jailbreak iOS 6 On Your iPhone, iPad Or iPod Touch

Media_httpreadwriteco_bpfoq

At last, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 is here. That not only means that the iPhone 5, iPad Mini and fourth generation 10-inch iPad can be freed from Apple's restrictions, but that it's safe for hardcore jail breakers to upgrade older devices to iOS 6 as well. Starting Monday, iOS users can do a lot more with their devices.

Jailbreaking isn't a difficult or highly technical process, but it does demand some caution. The evasi0n jailbreak tool comes with simple step-by-step instructions in its readme.txt file, but we thought a more thorough walk-through would be worthwhile, lest you accidentally delete your most settings and cherished digitally captured memories.

Apple’s 128GB iPad Goes On Sale, Just Ahead Of Microsoft’s Surface Pro Launch

Media_httptctechcrunc_dkxhg

Apple has started selling the capacious new 128GB iPad, the latest update to its fourth-generation Retina Display-sporting tablet design. The 9.7-inch iPad is pulling away from its 7.9-inch younger sibling, desperately crying out “I’m different!” with a flash storage bump. But more importantly, it’s also narrowing the perceived gap between itself and competitors like Microsoft’s Surface Pro.

The Surface Pro, an iPad competitor? Nay, you say. Microsoft’s computer is a computer, running a full-fledged desktop OS capable of running powerful apps like Photoshop and more, powered by an Intel Core i5 processor. It, too, comes equipped with up to 128GB of storage, features a number of input and output ports, and has a fancy stylus for handwriting.

But the iPad is not, nor has it ever been, in direct competition with incumbent devices running Windows software. In fact, the iPad has made its enterprise progress in spite of not being able to do all those things the Surface Pro is trumpeting about. People seeking out the Apple tablet for business use aren’t doing so because it has full Windows software support – it doesn’t. They’re doing it because what Apple does provide is conducive to changing practices in the workplace and new ways of getting things done.

Introducing The 'iPad Pro'

The new iPad, the one with a whopping 128 GB of storage, is only $70 cheaper than the cheapest Macbook.

To some people, that seems insane.

Macbooks, with their USB ports, keyboards, and mouses can do a lot more than an iPad.

Partly because of this tiny gap in price, Gizmodo says the new iPad is "Almost Definitely Not For You."

But smart New York tech startup scene guy Drew Breunig makes a smart point.

First he quotes Apple's release on the big iPad...

Apple Sets Sights On Microsoft Surface With 128 GB iPad

Media_httpreadwriteco_amjms

Apple announced a new version of its fourth-generation iPad today. Apple’s newest will be a 128 GB version starting at $799 with cellular connectivity at $929 and hits stores on February 5th. With the tablet industry trending towards smaller, cheaper versions, why would Apple buck the trend and release one of the most expensive tablets on the market?

The answer has little to do with Google, Amazon or the Android Army. For Apple, the 128 GB iPad is all about business and enterprise. What company controls the enterprise software market and is releasing its own expensive tablet?

Report: The iPad 5 Will Launch In October And Look Completely Different

Media_httpstatic1busi_hgysi

iLounge's Jeremy Horwitz reports Apple's fifth-generation iPad will launch in October with a brand new design. Horwitz says he's seen a model of the new iPad, but isn't sure if it's the final version.

Still, the design is very similar to the iPad Mini, so it'll be thinner and lighter with rounded edges and aluminum backing.

Horwitz also claims Apple's next iPhone will look very similar to the current iPhone 5 but have a larger camera flash on the back. Apple will also release a cheaper iPhone made of plastic.

Samsung Sues Apple Over iPad Mini

Media_httpstatic5busi_enpbj

Samsung filed a motion this week to amend its patent lawsuit against Apple to include the iPad Mini and new fifth-generation iPod Touch.

The motion claims since Samsung didn't know of the products when it filed the original lawsuit, they should be included since their design and software are so similar to other Apple products.

Here's an excerpt of the filing via AllThingsD:

The iPod Touch 5, iPad 4, and iPad Mini have the same accused functionality as the versions of the iPod Touch and iPad that are already part of this case. As such, the proof of infringement of the patents-in-suit by the iPod Touch 5, iPad 4, and iPad Mini will be substantially the same as for other Apple devices already accused of infringement in this litigation.
