Google Glass Has Already Been Hacked By Jailbreakers

Media_httpbiforbesimg_evmdi

With a name like Glass, it was just asking to be cracked.

Just days after its release to developers, Google’s Glass headset has already been hacked to give users full control of its Android operating system, according to Jay Freeman, a well-known Android and iOS developer who tested a known exploit for Android on Glass yesterday and announced his success on Twitter Friday afternoon. The “root” or “jailbreak” technique Freeman found would potentially remove any restrictions Google might place on Glass, though it’s not yet clear exactly what those restrictions might be in consumer versions of the device...

Apple iPhone Update Will Kill Jailbreak

Media_httpstatic3busi_xggca

Apple is working on an update to its iOS software for iPhones and iPads that will likely prevent users from jailbreaking their phones, according to Forbes.

The news comes from one of the developers who made the popular jailbreaking tool called Evasi0n, which lets users hack the newest version of iOS.

Apple's upcoming update apparently plugs the hole that Evasi0n uses to jailbreak iPhones and iPads running iOS 6. Developers are already testing the new version of iOS, so it'll likely launch within a few weeks.

A Jailbreak for iOS 6.1.1 Is Already Here

Media_httpimggawkeras_pkwed

iOS 6.1.1 was released yesterday, and there's already a jailbreak available for it. The Evasi0n jailbreak tool which hit the internet last week has been updated to v1.3, and it will now liberate everything.

As Redmond Pie notes, the 6.1.1 update wasn't really about patching up the new iPhone 5 jailbreak—it was about fixing cellular issues experienced by iPhone 4S users of iOS 6.1. The Evasi0n tool update fixes several bugs present in the last version, and will work for folks on 6.1.1. Here's a link to the latest version of the tool for Mac and Windows. For more info on jailbreaking your device, check out our comprehensive guide.

How To Jailbreak iOS 6 On Your iPhone, iPad Or iPod Touch

Media_httpreadwriteco_bpfoq

At last, the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 is here. That not only means that the iPhone 5, iPad Mini and fourth generation 10-inch iPad can be freed from Apple's restrictions, but that it's safe for hardcore jail breakers to upgrade older devices to iOS 6 as well. Starting Monday, iOS users can do a lot more with their devices.

Jailbreaking isn't a difficult or highly technical process, but it does demand some caution. The evasi0n jailbreak tool comes with simple step-by-step instructions in its readme.txt file, but we thought a more thorough walk-through would be worthwhile, lest you accidentally delete your most settings and cherished digitally captured memories.

Jailbreaking Is Now Legal For Smartphones

Media_httpimggawkeras_uxair

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act outlaws attempts to "circumvent" digital rights management schemes, but Congress is able to grant exemptions to the rule. Yesterday a bunch of changes were published—making it legal to jailbreak phones, but not tablets.

How hackers will jailbreak the iPhone 5

Media_httpwwwextremet_afjlo

Starting tomorrow, some of the world’s most tenacious hackers will begin the tricky task of jailbreaking the iPhone 5. To date, every single iPhone has been cracked wide open by hackers, blazing the trail for tethered and eventually untethered jailbreaks. Every year, Apple releases new products with increasingly complex security measures — and yet, without fail, they fall to the increasingly tenacious attacks of Apple hackers.

How does a hacker jailbreak an iPhone or iPad, though? Well, I’m glad you asked, because the answer is rather interesting.

Why You Shouldn't Jailbreak Your iPhone

We've already given you 10 reasons why you should jailbreak your iPhone.
But there's a less attractive side to jailbreaking.

Apple disowns you, you're a little more vulnerable to security threats, and sometimes things just break.

But those just barely scratch the surface.

The Latest iOS Jailbreak Is Here - Should You Bother?

A mere three weeks after Apple released iOS 5.1.1, the jailbreaking community has cracked it wide open. The latest version of the Absinthe jailbreaking tool is now available for download and it covers most iOS 5-compatible generations of the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch.

Because of changes in hardware - most notably the A5 processor - it took hackers several months to jailbreak iOS 5 on the iPhone 4S and iPad 2. Now that the biggest technical hurdles have been overcome, these new jailbreaks are coming out more rapidly.

iOS 5.1.1 Jailbreak Is Out Now

Media_httpimggawkeras_gajjb

So here's some good news: The Chronic Dev Team has released the untethered jailbreak tools for all of the post-A4 Apple devices. That means your iPhone 4S, 2012 iPad, iPad 2, and other, older devices can be jailbroken without having to boot into "tethered" mode (connecting to your computer) every time you restart.

Untethered jailbreaks are much more convenient, but also take longer to code after a release. Further, the newer devices like the iPad 2 and 2012 model, and the iPhone 4S, do not have the same hardware defect that allows super fast tethered cracks for older devices. That means folks with newer phones and tablets have to wait longer for their jailbreaks.

- We do not support or endorse jailbreaking or any form of hardware/software alteration that is outside of the law. Jailbreak at your own discretion.

Media_httpstatic8busi_bqbal

The iPhone is pretty useful right out of the box.

That's where jailbreaking comes in. Jailbreaking is a method that hacks into your phone and opens it up to other apps and modifications not approved by Apple.

If you love customizing your phone, then check out our favorite jailbreak apps and tweaks. Since our last jailbreak apps roundup, a lot of cool new iOS 5 programs came about, such as the famous virtual assistant Siri.

Americans explain why jailbreaking should be legal

Media_httpcraphoundco_eiasp

The Electronic Frontier Foundation has selected some of the best submissions from the Copyright Office's review of whether it should continue to be legal in the USA to "jailbreak" your devices in order to make them more suited to their needs. In this post, we hear from a deaf man who jailbreaks his phone so that he can use it as an assistive device at work; a military worker in Kuwait who jailbreaks his phone so he can quickly access the flashlight function to scare off dangerous wildlife near the base; and a nurse whose jailbroken device allows her to "track my performance, treatments used on patients, and the effects of those treatments, much faster with customizations that are not available on a device that is not jailbroken."

The iPhone 4S Has Been Jailbroken

jailbroken4S

Listen up, fanboys, because this is one you won’t want to miss. The iPhone 4S has been officially jailbroken.

iClarified reports that the iPhone Dev-Team found a way to get Cydia running on both the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2, though the jailbreak is “VERY preliminary.” There are still big pieces missing and plenty of work left to do, so unfortunately the jailbreak won’t be released to the public. Luckily, we can at least get a peek from this video.

For the uninitiated, Cydia lets users browse and install unofficial apps on their iDevice. MuscelNerd, the lead developer of the iPhone Dev-Team, says this is a userland exploit that occurs after iBoot is out of the picture.

Check out the video below, where you can see the iPad 2 running Cydia:

Started by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, Apple has expanded from computers to consumer electronics over the last 30 years, officially changing their name from Apple Computer, Inc. to Apple, Inc. in January 2007. Among the key offerings from Apple’s product line are: Pro line laptops (MacBook Pro) and desktops (Mac Pro), consumer line laptops (MacBook) and desktops (iMac), servers (Xserve), Apple TV, the Mac OS X and Mac OS X Server operating systems, the iPod (offered with...
