Samsung Electronics made an operating profit of 8.78 trillion won ($7.9 billion) in the first quarter of 2013, matching its guidance and representing a more than 50 percent improvement on its performance last year. Revenues were 52.87 trillion won ($47.6 billion), and net profit was 7.15 trillion won ($6.45 billion). The company said strong smartphone sales coupled with reduced marketing expenses helped boost its IT & Mobile Communications division to revenues of 32.82 trillion alone. However, Samsung's revenues were hit by seasonality — the company took in 6 percent less cash than in the previous quarter — and what it describes as a sluggish economy that meant lower TV and home appliance sales.

LG will reportedly release a flexible OLED smartphone this year
Aside from 4K and 8K, the only other significant advance in display technology that is currently within our reach is making one that’s flexible. Consumer electronics events have been showing off flexible displays for a while now, but they’re generally the equivalent of a tech demo rather than a marketable product. However, a new report suggests that LG will be bringing a smartphone with a flexible OLED display to market sometime this year...

Samsung Galaxy S4 Review: The S Stands For Super, Not Simple
The Galaxy S4 has an easy mode, and more importantly, the Galaxy S4 needs an easy mode. This necessity is a double-edged sword. It means that the technology built into Samsung’s latest generation smartphone does things you’ve never seen before, and maybe couldn’t even imagine. However, really using that technology isn’t as simple as you might think, and could be downright overwhelming to a novice smartphone user.
This is the theme I kept running into with the GS4. If you’re technologically advanced enough to be excited for hovering gestures and optical readers and two cameras working at the same time, then yes, you should absolutely jump on the Galaxy S bandwagon. But for those of you who want a phone that works well, keeps you connected, and not much else, be forewarned that the S in Galaxy S4 certainly doesn’t stand for simple...

The HTC One is available nationwide today
Starting today, the One – HTC’s latest flagship smartphone – is available online and in physical stores all across the United States.
The list of retailers that will carry the One is quite comprehensive: AT&T, Sprint, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Walmart, Target, Amazon.com, Costco, Car Toys, Sam’s Club, HSN.com, and HTC.com. Looks like HTC is safeguarding against anymore problems with the One’s availability. But if HTC has enough units to fill orders from all these retailers, it would seem the supply issues have been ironed out.
The One is an impressive piece of hardware, we came away thoroughly impressed by its physical features. Specifically applauding the phone’s attractive design, crisp 1080p display, superior audio quality, and speedy performance. Unfortunately, the sealed-in battery, underdeveloped BlinkFeed, and some issues with it running hot left a bad taste in our mouth. Not to say it’s a bad phone, just not our absolute favorite...

Nokia hits $7.7 billion in revenue for Q1 2013 with 5.6 million Lumias sold
Nokia may have seen an operating loss in Q1 2013, but the news isn't all bad. The company saw revenue of $7.7 billion and managed to sell 5.6 million Lumias, which equates to a 30 percent increase in handset sales over last quarter. As for earnings, Nokia put a shiny buff on them by trumpeting a net profit of $236 million using the non-IFRS accounting method. By stricter IFRS rules, it actually lost $150 million, but that still compares favorably to the vast billion dollar losses it made in the same quarter of 2012...

Cellular, Cricket, and C Spire also get the phone at launch. The Samsung press release didn’t offer all the pricing and availability details, but it was quickly followed up by announcements from the carriers themselves.

Facebook Home now available for almost any Android device
Despite an early leak on Monday, once again the internet lit-up with chatter about the release of Facebook Home in the Google Play store. All good and well if you find yourself in the right place with the right phone, but what about everyone else? Unsurprisingly, the digital door staff (read, Facebook's hardware restrictions) have already been dispatched, meaning almost any Android device can download and install the social software.

'Yes, A Lower-Priced iPhone Is In The Works And Expected This July'
Apple's lower-cost iPhone is a lock for this year, says Topeka Capital analyst Brian White.
White has been touring Asia for the last two weeks passing along all the gossip he's hearing. We would be hesitant to characterize any of it as much more than gossip. Supply chain sources can be fickle, and inaccurate. But it's still fun to hear what's being talked about.
BlackBerry Takes Its PR Fight To The SEC: Seeks Review Of “False” Report On Return Rates Of BB Z10
BlackBerry, the beleaguered Canadian handset maker, today said it is contacting the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Ontario Securities Commission for formal reviews of the analysts Detwiler Fenton, after its analysts issued a statement saying that its new flagship handset, the BB Z10, was seeing record-levels of returns in retail sales — reports that BlackBerry today says are “false and misleading.”
“Sales of the BlackBerry® Z10 are meeting expectations and the data we have collected from our retail and carrier partners demonstrates that customers are satisfied with their devices,” said BlackBerry President and CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement. “Return rate statistics show that we are at or below our forecasts and right in line with the industry. To suggest otherwise is either a gross misreading of the data or a willful manipulation. Such a conclusion is absolutely without basis and BlackBerry will not leave it unchallenged.”

HTC One Review: The Most Beautiful Android Phone Ever Made
Until now, Android phones haven't been much to look at.
It's a common stereotype that Android devices are only made for those who don't care about design or build quality, just getting a phone for as cheap as possible.
The stereotype is only perpetuated by the fact that most Android manufacturers continue to make their stuff out of cheap, ugly plastic.
HTC isn't buying into that trend with its newest flagship smartphone, the HTC One, which is made from all metal and glass with some durable plastic accents. It's bigger and arguably more beautiful than the iPhone 5.

You also buy the 32GB unlocked version for $574.99 or the 64GB Developer Edition for $649.99. Shipping is expected to begin on April 18.
iPhone 5S Rumor Roundup: Everything We Think We Know
The build up to the launch of a new iOS device is always paved with rumors, speculation, and mostly unfulfilled promises. Every year the tech world and the regular world collectively obsess over Apple’s newest device as images leak and insiders report.
If Apple’s typical naming scheme is to be trusted, we can basically guarantee we’ll be seeing the latest iPhone carry the title of 5S. Though some say this will only be one of three models set to launch in 2013. All signs point to a nearly identical design on the outside with all the changes taking place under the hood. From there, the rumors range from absurd to virtually certain and we try to tell you which is which along the way.

Who Will Win As Mobile Payments Go Mainstream?
Consumers gravitate to convenience. That's as true with payment technologies as it is with anything else. A prime example is the decades-old trend away from cash or checks and toward credit cards.
Now, the mass adoption of smartphones and tablets has set the stage for a new move — away from fixed-point, card-based transactions and toward those completed on mobile. The old dream of the "digital wallet" is coming true in a very particular mobile-led fashion.

The Next 2 iPhones Were Developed Under Steve Jobs
Apple has already designed the next two versions of its iconic iPhone, with both phones well underway before CEO Tim Cook took the helm of the company.
That’s according to San Francisco District Attorney George Gascon, who says he was told this when he met with Apple’s government liaison Michael Foulkes in the last week.
Presuming Apple sticks to its regular naming convention, the two phones Foulkes was referring to are the iPhone 5S and the iPhone 6...
