'Yes, A Lower-Priced iPhone Is In The Works And Expected This July'

Media_httpstatic3busi_ohggb

Apple's lower-cost iPhone is a lock for this year, says Topeka Capital analyst Brian White.

White has been touring Asia for the last two weeks passing along all the gossip he's hearing. We would be hesitant to characterize any of it as much more than gossip. Supply chain sources can be fickle, and inaccurate. But it's still fun to hear what's being talked about.

Build the Best PC For Your Buck

Media_httpimggawkeras_pxdnc

We all know that, generally speaking, buying the newest top-end part gets you the most performance. But in most cases, the premium you pay for that part covers a whole lot of other stuff as well that has no bearing on frame rates or video encoding times. We're talking about the added cost of covering research and development, product marketing, lower production yields, etc. That high price also includes a vanity tax, if you will-the extra charge incurred by folks who simply want to have the latest hardware, hot off the fab, for bragging rights.

Splashing out on the very latest gear is all well and good, if you're rolling in cabbage. But for most of us, the job of choosing what part to buy is much more nuanced. The object is to find the hardware that offers the greatest value-the best price-to-performance ratio.

Apple Working On a Less-Expensive iPhone

Media_httpsiwsjnetpub_wbtiv

Apple Inc. is working on a lower-end iPhone, according to people briefed on the matter, a big shift in corporate strategy as its supremacy in smartphones has slipped.

While Apple has explored such a device for years, the plan is progressing and a less expensive version of its flagship device could launch later this year, one of the people said.

The cheaper phone could resemble the standard iPhone, with a different, less-expensive body, one of the people said.

One possibility under consideration is lowering the cost of the device by using a different shell made of polycarbonate plastic; in contrast, the iPhone 5 currently has an aluminum housing.

How To Brand Yourself On A Small Budget

Media_httpblogsimages_wpcax

It is often said you will be judged in the first ten seconds of meeting someone. Businesses know how important this is, and rely on their brand strategy to convey meaning and impact in the shortest time possible, driven to do this by an Internet society short on time and shorter of attention. Information needs to be direct, clear and of value, and well designed brands reveal their power when anyone can recognize and remember a product or company by their chosen font, logo or even a half-heard jingle.

This Cheap Computer Monitor Is Your Massive-Screen-Space Deal of the Day

Media_httpimggawkeras_miupe

The easiest way to convince your coworkers and colleagues that you're super-productive is to have a ton of screen space. Especially if your 2nd monitor only shows charts, trends, and graphs. When you peel your vision away from your Minority-Report-style screens for a minute, you'll look onto your poor single-screen having friends, and you'll know you're getting twice as much internet in your eyeballs as they are. Here's how I divide my screens up: business on the left, party on the right.

700 Photoshop Resources – only $49!

Media_httpdesignyoutr_knbns

Designers today have it way too easy. Why back in the old days we used to have to draw stuff by hand and then scan it in. And that was only after trekking through 10 feet of snow to chop down a tree and carve pencils…
Today’s designers get to use Photoshop, which gives them pretty much limitless access to express their creativity. But the really cool part about Photoshop is the ability to add on all sorts of resources to make designing even easier, as well as offering new approaches.

How Digital Cameras Actually Work—And Why They're So Cheap

Media_httpimggawkeras_ohaii

Chances are you've got a digital camera of some sort in your pocket or bag, but you've never given too much thought how it really works. Pictures go on computer, not film. Right, well, here's a simple and straightforward explanation of how that happens, exactly.

Bill Hammack, the Engineer Guy, explains the mechanics of how digital photography works with the charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors found on most point-and-shoot or cellphone cameras, and why that method is both cheap and effective. There are actually some pretty interesting cost-savers and workarounds in place. And while higher end digital cameras today have moved onto MOS or CMOS sensors, CCD is still in a huge number of the actual cameras in actual pockets out there.

Dirt-Cheap Touchscreen Tech Means They'll Be Everywhere Soon

Media_httpimggawkeras_ijnaq

You can operate your tablet and your smartphone by touch, but what if you could do the same with say, nutritional labels or price tags?

A research team headed up at Harvard University has developed paper electronic touch pads that cost just 25 cents per square meter. That means a small screen would be so cheap you could throw it out when you don't need it. Not exactly something people are doing with their iPads.

These inexpensive displays are made out of paper that has been coated in aluminum and a transparent polymer. With the aid of an external circuit, the metallized material becomes a capacitive surface. While the paper is super cheap, the challenge now is in finding equally affordable power sources, as well as reasonably-priced, flexible electronics.

Rumor Mill Ramps Up Production of Cheaper and Smaller iPads

Media_httpallthingsdc_bsefh

The Apple rumor mill has kicked into overdrive in advance of next week’s iPad event, pushing out a pair of speculative reports this morning about what lies in the company’s product pipeline.

The most plausible: Taiwanese trade mag Digitimes’ claim that Apple plans to sell a cheaper, 8 gigabyte iPad 2 alongside the iPad 3 in a play for the lower end of the tablet market being staked out by Amazon’s Kindle Fire. I’ve heard nothing about such a plan, but it makes good sense. A new, low-capacity iPad 2 — priced at, say, $299 or even $349 — could wreak havoc on the low-end tablet market, clearing out a raft of struggling competitors and making the choice between Kindle Fire and iPad a much more difficult one for those consumers weighing the two.
