These 15 Tech Billionaires Are Spending Millions To Save The World

Media_httpstatic3busi_mimws

With great wealth comes great responsibility.

That's how we judge the tycoons of tech. While many of them spend their money on expensive luxuries, like cars, houses, planes — even islands — they are also expected to use their prosperity to do good works.

That's the implicit demand of the tech industry.

Some are astoundingly generous, giving tens of millions —even hundreds of millions — to their favorite causes. How much they give says a lot about them. Which causes they support does, too...

5 Big Tech Companies That Are Killing It On Facebook

Media_httpreadwriteco_jnruh

It's taken for granted these days that if you run a business, you need to be on Facebook. And while any monkey can click the "Create Page" button, it takes a smart strategy to wind up with the kind of Facebook numbers that are truly brag-worthy.

Of course, it doesn't hurt to be a huge corporation with major brand recognition. But size doesn't necessarily translate into a solid Facebook presence, either. Heck, the biggest tech company of all apparently doesn't even need Facebook to succeed. Other than for iTunes, Apple doesn't maintain any official corporate presence on Facebook.

6 Cool Tech Tools Small Businesses Just Gotta Have

Last week’s International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas does promise consumer right in its name, and the 2013 event was indeed chock-full of gizmos you will want to bring home: bicycle video cameras, space-age baby carriages (complete with a smartphone dock), and Brainwave Cat Ears (I already ordered my own set).

Happily, however, the consumer focus doesn’t keep vendors from showing plenty of business-class equipment. The miles of booths included everything from the latest laptop computers and office printers to small, useful gadgets and tools tuned to small business’s needs. Here are my favorites.

5 New Year's Resolutions To Manage Your Tech Habits

Media_httpreadwriteco_mieqj

I took two weeks completely offline over the Holidays, and I learned something humbling. I like to blame technology itself for encouraging bad habits.

But in my reluctance to come back onto the grid this week, I eased in cautiously, and I realized that most of the problems just arise from me using tech too much and without enough intention. When I use my gadgets and services more deliberately and less often, the problems mostly go away, but still leave me with the benefits of being connected.

The 7 Technology Trends That Will Matter Most To Small Business in 2013

Media_httpreadwriteco_gworq

If 2012 was a year of "wait and see," for small business technology, 2013 will be a year to "go for it."

One key reason is that small business optimism is already rising. According to the Fall 2012 Bank of America Small Business Owner Report, more than half of small business owners project sales will grow in the next year, and almost one-third plan to hire. Just 7% expect sales to drop and only 3% plan to lay off employees. And entrepreneurs typically believe they're local economies are doing better than the nation as a whole. (That can't be true for everyone, of course, but it still speaks to increasing optimism.)
