Wearable Computing: A New Mobile Market Takes Shape

Media_httpstatic3busi_pzdpp

Those betting big on wearable computing believe an assorted new crop of gadgets — mostly worn on the wrist or as eyewear — will transform the way in which we interact with the rest of our devices.

But wearables won't just complement smartphones. What is perhaps most intriguing about them is that they will serve new purposes too. Because they are designed to be worn close to the body, they're ideal for monitoring our vital signs and health. They'll track how active we are, our sleep quality, how many steps we take during the day. Consumers of all sorts — fitness buffs, dieters, and the elderly — will come to rely on them.

Media_httpstatic2busi_hbjzq

New tech industries start small but can grow into permanent, billion-dollar slices of infrastructure. Sometimes that seems to happen overnight — like with smartphones.

And sometimes it takes years — like with the dumbphones that grew like mold from the mid-1990s through the late 2000s.

And now, for example, the prevalence of smart mobile devices has spurred the mobile app industry, an entirely new piece of infrastructure which supports thousands of companies and billions of dollars in sales.

Dow Hits Record High; Time to Buy Tech?

Media_httpwwwwiredcom_qgfji

The Dow Jones Industrial Average has never been higher. On Tuesday, after a run-up of 125 points, the index of 30 blue chip companies closed at 14,253, beating the record close set in October 2007. Wind back those five-plus years, and you’ll recall we were on the verge of a global financial collapse and the worst recession since the Depression.

So what are we to make of crossing this line? Especially if you believe it’s not industrial behemoths like Alcoa, General Electric, and Procter & Gamble – all component companies in the Dow – that are the economic engines of our future but tech companies like Apple, Google and Facebook. What’s a tech investor, or even an employee of a tech company, to do?

Invest in tech, says Kevin Landis, president of Firsthand Capital Management, a mutual fund company, with $300 million under management. Landis’ largest holdings are Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. On the secondary market, he’s also purchased a chunk of still privately held Twitter.

“I think of the Dow as possessing what I would call psychological incumbency; it’s probably that simple as to why it’s followed so closely,” Landis says. “But as an active investor, I am glad people follow it. I do better in a world where people look at the wrong things.”

That Wall Street was celebrating the Dow on Tuesday, and not the tech-heavy Nasdaq, is a function of how ridiculously expensive tech companies were back in the bubble days of 2000 when the Nasdaq hit a record 5,049. On Tuesday it closed at 3,220. Nowhere near a record, but higher than it’s been in 12 years...

China Passes U.S. As World’s Top Smart Device Market

Media_httptctechcrunc_aiifu

In November, mobile app services company Flurry announced that China was on track to top the U.S. and Android install base at some point in the first quarter of 2013. Today, Flurry says that has happened. China has passed the U.S. to become the world’s top country for active Android and iOS smartphones and tablets, a year after the country became the fastest-growing smart device market in the world.

For its report, Flurry sourced from its entire data set of over 2.4 billion anonymous, aggregated app session daily across over 275,000 applications around the world. The company says it reliably measures activity in over 90 percent of the world’s smart devices.

In January of this year, the U.S. and China were neck-and-neck in terms of their active smart device installed base, at 222 million and 221 million, respectively. By the end of this month, Flurry estimates that will change to 230 million in the U.S. and 246 million in China.

More importantly, the U.S. will not regain the lead after this shift occurs, due the size of China’s population (over 1.3 billion people vs. 310 million in the U.S.). In fact, the report notes, the only other country that could eventually challenge China is India, which has just over 1.2 billion people. But China’s smart device installed base is significantly larger than India’s, where today there are only 19 million active devices.

The Growth Of China's Smartphone Market

Media_httpstatic2busi_pfydl

China will be 2x the US smart phone market in a year! Only two years ago, China was a laggard with a tiny portion of the US. What happened?

Originally, China's market developed more slowly because of two reasons. First, usable 3G networks took much longer to develop than other countries. Second, there are few subsidies in China, so users had to pay one or two month's salary for an iPhone or Android. These inhibited the growth.

But both issues have changed. Broadband wireless is now over 58%, and smart phone prices have dropped to about $100 for an acceptable Android phone, and about $200 for a full-featured Android phone. Smart phones are now spreading like wildfire.

Media_httpwebtoolfeed_neczl

Since the mid 2000s, the housing industry has been in decline. Fewer banks are lending to new buyers, and many people have found themselves foreclosed on through rising interest prices and increased unemployment. Today’s buyers are not interested in the features of homes of the past. Today’s buyers must see something spectacular or innovative before they will commit to a purchase. In response to this, housing manufacturers have come with new features and options that will interest the modern home buyer.

Media_httptctechcrunc_jgtsi

Windows Phone has been picking up steam lately, launching the platform in China just yesterday and making headway as one of Nokia’s primary partners.

But when it comes to buying Windows Phone, the big hesitation for just about everyone is apps. Both the Android Market and the App Store have surpassed half a million apps each, but today Microsoft has an exciting (albeit smaller) bit of good news to share.

The Windows Phone Marketplace has topped 70,000 apps. That’s up from 50,000 in December and 60,000 in January.

How to Mainstream Your Niche Market

Media_httpwwwopenforu_uioze

If you find a new, small business without a super niche and some kind of uber-nuanced element to it, you're likely looking at an all-in-one corporate chain.

Today, businesses specializing in something very specific are attractive to mainstream consumers looking for something more in their less. Stick&Pop is one of those businesses. Cupcake, meatball, PB&J and macaroni & cheese stand-alone shops abound. So do specialty paper shops, wool and yarn shops and boutiques that carry items where a hip designer has simply put a bird on a collection of reclaimed wood pieces.
