The Ultimate (Free) Virus Protection Guide

Media_httpimggawkeras_ifpdd

So you got caught with your pants down on the Internet (figuratively, folks) and contracted a virus. That sucks. Or maybe you were wearing protection but still fell victim to some nasty bit of code that managed to slip by your antivirus software undetected. That sucks even more. Either way, it's nothing to feel ashamed about. The web is a dangerous place and even the most tech savvy users sometimes slip up. You can even get a virus through no fault of your own simply by visiting a reputable website that, unbeknownst to you, has been compromised by a hacker with malicious intent. The web is a war zone, and even if you're not a target, you can still end up a casualty.

Wearable Computing: A New Mobile Market Takes Shape

Media_httpstatic3busi_pzdpp

Those betting big on wearable computing believe an assorted new crop of gadgets — mostly worn on the wrist or as eyewear — will transform the way in which we interact with the rest of our devices.

But wearables won't just complement smartphones. What is perhaps most intriguing about them is that they will serve new purposes too. Because they are designed to be worn close to the body, they're ideal for monitoring our vital signs and health. They'll track how active we are, our sleep quality, how many steps we take during the day. Consumers of all sorts — fitness buffs, dieters, and the elderly — will come to rely on them.

US Congress restricts government purchase of Chinese computer equipment, citing cyber-espionage concerns

Media_httpcdn0sbnatio_pzsbg

Whether you’re designing a website for a certain up-and-coming personality or just doing some Photoshop or Illustrator projects for kicks, you can never underestimate the power of color schemes in finding the right colors for your project.

There are so many sources for combination of colors for a specific project. For starters, you can just look out of your window and see which colors look good in your eyes and which ones look revolting when combined; nature can be a good source of inspiration. However, there are more sophisticated tools in choosing the right color combinations, like the products offered by Pantone, where you can easily see which colors look good when juxtaposed. But if you are looking for other places to look for color schemes, here are some tips.

Report says that tablets will outsell desktops this year

Media_httpicdn8digita_cdijq

There’s no doubt about it: sales of tablets have been steadily increasing over the years, particularly now that there are so many affordable options for people to choose from. But as Mashable published earlier today, the uber mobile computers will outsell desktops this year, according to a report conducted by research group IDC. Tablet sales are expected to grow by 48.7 percent, while desktop sales will drop by 4.3 percent. What’s more, next year tablets will even begin to outsell laptops.

The trend, according to IDC, is due to the emerging market sales. “In emerging markets, consumer spending typically starts with mobile phones and, in many cases, moves to tablets before PCs,” said Megha Saini, a research analyst with IDC.

A look at the future of hands-free computing

Computer use has been a tactile experience for decades. Despite huge increases in computing power, the two fundamental peripherals – keyboard and mouse – have remained. Using a computer means sitting down at a desk or table and flirting with carpal tunnel. Don’t want to do that? Too bad!

Apple’s iPhone, and the plethora of touchscreen devices that have followed it have started to change the experience from the bottom up. Our smallest devices now are the most innovative while our desktops remain static and dull.

This newly founded hierarchy may not be permanent, however, as technologies have begun to mature and converge not just on smartphones and tablets but also laptops, desktops, and home consoles. The hands-free future dreamed by science fiction is inching its way towards reality.

Soon You Will Interact With Computers Through Thought Alone

Media_httpstatic2busi_fhqko

Amplifiers for the human brain, designed to allow people with paralysis to interact with the world, aren’t the most easily understood technology. So g.tec, the company that makes them, has come up with the following creative marketing strategy: Convince us that we’ll soon be interacting with computers through thought alone.

Will it ever be possible to compute the human brain?

Media_httpwwwextremet_qgjfc

In the video below, Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria is seen to make a spectacular grab to save a reporter from certain death — or at least serious injury. Granted, Evan may have had a little help from video editing, but at the professional level at least, comparable performances no doubt occur every time an umpire gives the command to play ball. The computations a man-made machine would need to perform to detect and track an incoming threat, like an errant ball, and simultaneously perform motor adjustments to intercept it are certainly not trivial. Yet, for a human brain, the computations underlying such virtuosity pale in comparison to the massive background processing interleaved to create the awareness to perform the task in the first place — or to chose a different course of action on say, the tenth run of the scenario.

HP Makes A Chromebook: What Does It Mean?

Media_httpreadwriteco_jgjjf

When the world's largest PC manufacturer starts making Chromebooks, what does it mean? Does it reveal a degree of uncertainty about the direction of the PC? A response to the perceived complexity of Windows 8 machines? An underserved market it can exploit?

Why not all of the above?

Early Monday morning, Hewlett-Packard announced the Pavilion 14 Chromebook, a $329.99 netbook boasting both a larger screen - 14 inches - than rival Chromebooks, as well as a new pricing tier. HP's Pavilion 14 brings the total Chromebook count to four: the $229 Samsung Chromebook, the $199 Acer C7, the $449 Samsung Chromebook 550, and the Pavilion 14. HP's screen may be the largest of the bunch, but its processor - a dual-core Intel Celeron - sits below the Chromebook's 550's Intel Core processor.

40 Vintage Computer Ads of Yesteryears

Media_httpmedia02hong_xzwkp

Still remember the good ol’ days with joysticks and bulky monitors? 1TB hard disks may now be a common sight, but did you know that people used to be excited over ads promoting 10MB hard disks? Modems were the size of radios, the Macintosh computer looked like a typewriter, and laptops reminded us of toolboxes.

We may have outlived 3.5-inch floppy disk slots, and today 10 MB is the limit for an email attachment. It took us (a mere) few decades for us to come this far. In comparison, we can now carry 64 GB (that’s 64,000 MB) of information in a drive that is the size of our thumb!

This comes to us by way of BGR.

We've expected this for a little while. Apple Stores around the country have been "running out" of current-generation iMacs at the same time.

It's a timely refresh. The current iMac hasn't seen any improvements since October 2009.

Media_httpimggawkeras_jrhab

Mountain Lion, the next big software cat for your Mac, has a gazillion new features. Too many to name, and frankly, to care about. But there's one you should pay attention to, because it might change all of computing.

Dictation is one of the most straightforward new parts of OS X Mountain Lion—so simple that it's easy to overlook. All you do is double-tap a button, start talking wherever you'd type, and your computer fills in the words you speak. It's a stellar replacement for the bulk of casual typing that fills up our conscious hours. And it's fast!—you truly feel like you've got an attentive secretary stuck somewhere in that tiny aluminum chassis. Apple says Dictation will even adapt to your voice over time, making it more accurate and attuned the more you plow through it. Neat.
