Alexander Graham Bell, the man widely credited with inventing the telephone as we know it (though there is a longstanding debate over who actually was first), can be heard again today, some 128 years after he recorded himself counting and speaking in his laboratory in Washington, DC, saying: "In witness whereof, hear my voice, Alexander Graham Bell." The historic lost audio file — the first recording of Bell's voice — was retrieved by several researchers around the country using a technique developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory...

Dow Hits Record High; Time to Buy Tech?
The Dow Jones Industrial Average has never been higher. On Tuesday, after a run-up of 125 points, the index of 30 blue chip companies closed at 14,253, beating the record close set in October 2007. Wind back those five-plus years, and you’ll recall we were on the verge of a global financial collapse and the worst recession since the Depression.
So what are we to make of crossing this line? Especially if you believe it’s not industrial behemoths like Alcoa, General Electric, and Procter & Gamble – all component companies in the Dow – that are the economic engines of our future but tech companies like Apple, Google and Facebook. What’s a tech investor, or even an employee of a tech company, to do?
Invest in tech, says Kevin Landis, president of Firsthand Capital Management, a mutual fund company, with $300 million under management. Landis’ largest holdings are Apple, Amazon, Google and Facebook. On the secondary market, he’s also purchased a chunk of still privately held Twitter.
“I think of the Dow as possessing what I would call psychological incumbency; it’s probably that simple as to why it’s followed so closely,” Landis says. “But as an active investor, I am glad people follow it. I do better in a world where people look at the wrong things.”
That Wall Street was celebrating the Dow on Tuesday, and not the tech-heavy Nasdaq, is a function of how ridiculously expensive tech companies were back in the bubble days of 2000 when the Nasdaq hit a record 5,049. On Tuesday it closed at 3,220. Nowhere near a record, but higher than it’s been in 12 years...

Google Stock Blasts To All-Time High
Google stock rocketed up another $11 today to close at a new all-time high.
At $785 a share, Google now has a market cap of $260 billion.
The re-awakening of Google's stock follows a multi-year period in which most investors generally ignored the company.
Google went public in 2004. Over the next three years, the stock proceeded to blast from $100 to $700.
But then, from 2007 to the middle of 2012, as the company's hyper-growth slowed, Google's stock multiple compressed.
But Google the company kept growing.

BlackBerry Z10 Smartphone Breaks BB Sales Records in UK and Canada
BlackBerry’s January 30 comeback seemed to be met with only lukewarm enthusiasm by tech “specialists” and regular fans alike, but guess what, BB 10 might be a much bigger hit than anyone had predicted.
At least that’s what we can make of the most recent statements issued by Thorsten Heins, the CEO of the company formerly known as RIM. The first BlackBerry 10 OS-powered device, the Z10, has hit the ground running in both UK and Canada.

BlackBerry Z10 Jumps Off to a Record-Setting Start in Canada and U.K.
BlackBerry’s new Z10 smartphone is a record-setter — in two of the first markets in which it debuted, anyway.
BlackBerry said on Wednesday that the Canadian and U.K. launches of the Z10 have been the best of any of its handsets debuts in those regions ever.
“In Canada, yesterday was the best day ever for the first day of a launch of a new BlackBerry smartphone. In fact, it was more than 50 percent better than any other launch day in our history in Canada,” BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins said in a statement sent to AllThingsD. “In the U.K., we have seen close to three times our best performance ever for the first week of sales for a BlackBerry smartphone.”
The company declined to provide any hard sales numbers. And while we tried to dig up some old metrics from which to extrapolate, we have so far been unsuccessful. If those numbers exist somewhere outside of Waterloo, we haven’t been able to find them. In other words, early Z10 sales are much better than some numbers BlackBerry isn’t quantifying.

China Now Tops US in Space Launches
For the first time ever, China has launched more rockets into orbit in a year than the U.S. In 2011, the Chinese sent 19 rockets into space. The U.S. sent just 18. Russia, the Walmart of space launches, fired off no fewer than 31 rockets.
The numbers, parsed in recent reports from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration and the nonprofit Space Foundation, might seem to herald America's orbital decline relative to its most bitter rival. In terms of sheer numbers of rocket launches, China has been steadily catching up to America for several years. In 2010, China fired off 15 rockets, matching the U.S. for the first time.
