In his recent post on Wide Screen, the Yahoo movies blog, Will Perkins wonders where the Oscars for Best Title Sequence were at the recent ceremony. Indeed, although this area of filmmaking is already recognised at the Emmies with the Emmy Award For Outstanding Main Title Design, it still is overlooked at most other award shows for the film industry. Fortunately Ian Albinson, founder and editor-in-chief of the influential Art of the Title website, and a principal of the motion design studio Albinson Design, is again hosting the unofficial Oscars for Film Title Design next week, on March 11 at SXSW 2013.
Now entering its 4th year, the SXSW Film Design Awards recognise Excellence in Poster Design and in Title Design. I had the pleasure to attend last year’s screening of the finalists and highly recommend it even if you only have a passing interest in film title design. This year’s presentation of the best title sequences of 2012 will open with an informative conversation between award-winning main titles designer and broadcast editor Jay Bond and host Ian Albinson. Bond is co-founder of Oily Film Company Inc. who were responsible for 2012 Film Design Award-winner Les Bleus de Ramville. Almost a third of The Avengers may have been set in New York, but as this video from Industrial Light & Magic's YouTube channel shows us, hardly any of the filming took place in the Big Apple itself. Since actually filming in New York would have been difficult—what with the many road-blocking restrictions and the city generally looking down on setting their streets and/or citizens on fire—almost everything had to be digitally recreated.

The Iron Man 3 trailer (above) mixes a reasonable amount of previously seen footage with some new—the highlight being a scene where Stark plucks falling passengers out of the sky following some sort of airplane disaster. It still looks amazing.

Movie posters are designed to grab our attention, and to draw us into the world of the film. They are designed to generate a feel of what to expect from a film and invite us in. Posters usually only have a limited time to influence us so the best way to pique our interest is to design a visually creative poster. Some of the more creative posters come from when the film is based on a unique concept or of a dark subject matter. However, just because the movie is a ‘chick flick’ does not mean the poster has to be just a simple, boring design as demonstrated by some of the works below.
Movie posters can make or break a movie through the way it is designed to attract movie goers and while 2012 brought us a great selection of movies with stunning poster design like Avengers, Argo, the Hobbit, Rurouni Kenshin and Wreck-it Ralph among others, we just couldn’t help but get excited to see the movies that is in stored for us this year. As a designer, it’s often beneficial to get out of your comfort zone and work on something that you’re not often used to. If you usually spend your time working on client work, there are some huge benefits to trying something completely different. Designing a movie poster requires a different set of skills to designing a logo, brand identity or website – and you can often learn new things or new approaches to design that can later influence your client work. It can also be fun to work on something you’re not used to, and is a great way to get the creative juices flowing.
Movie posters in particular can be surprisingly different to work on than most client work – and the reason is because of the lack of constraints. While client work has to have a particular style, appearance or approach, a movie poster can go in any direction. Staring at a blank canvas can be a daunting challenge, but once you have a direction that you’re happy with the results can be truly stunning.
We’re sure hoping that Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot is as dark and epic as it looks from this dramatic trailer. One can only hope this is The Dark Knight of Superman.
When the 3D version of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey debuts in movie theaters on Dec. 14, the film will likely wow viewers with its special effects.
But audiences at select theaters will get even more bang for their buck: They’ll be the first to witness a new technology that displays images at a rate of 48 frames per second, twice as fast as the current standard.
