Dreams of sailing through the universe at light speed have sparked human imagination since we realized our Milky Way was only one of many galaxies, but this incredible animation by Johns Hopkins’ Miguel Aragon and Alex Szalay and Adler Planetarium’s Mark Subbarao will leave you awestruck at just how insignificant our little corner really is.
Using data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, you can now cruise past almost 400,000 of our galactic brethren, reaching about 1.2 billion light years away, but that’s only the beginning of what science has discovered.

Apparently, when you remove the price tag from a service and make it free, people are more likely to try it out. Yes, we know that sounds like crazy talk, but that seems to be the case for DC Universe Online, and we’re as surprised as you.

DC Universe Online will go free-to-play on November 1
Sony Online Entertainment reveals the date DC Universe Online will cross over to a free-to-play model.
Last month, Sony Online Entertainment announced plans to drop the monthly subscription fee for DC Universe Online, the MMORPG featuring a massive roster of DC Comics heroes and villains. Well, the free-to-play moment has finally arrived… or rather, it will arrive in just a few days.

Imagining Other Worlds: Artists' Impressions of Planets Outside Our Solar System

I have long been a fan of the artistic rendering of a scientific phenomenon. I got hooked through dinosaur paintings and black hole renderings, but really fell in love when I started reporting on exoplanets. While some dinosaur imaginings are legitimately beautiful, most planetary renderings are plainly utilitarian. We don't know much about the exoplanets, so artists shy away from details even as they provide bloggers with something to stick at the top of their posts (we're not above that, either!).

Looking like an image out of Will Wright's video game, Spore, M 27, or NGC 6853 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1,360 light years. Its central star, a white dwarf, is larger than any other known white dwarf in the universe. Also known by the absurd name, the Dumbbell, it contains knots marked by a central region of dark and bright cusped knots and their associated dark tails. The knots vary in appearance from symmetric objects with tails to rather irregular tail-less objects. Similarly to the Helix Nebula and the Eskimo Nebula, the heads of the knots have bright cusps which are local.
