Scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva were cheered like rock stars on July 4 when they formally announced that they had almost certainly nabbed the biggest and most elusive catch in modern physics: the Higgs boson. Dubbed the "God particle," the Higgs boson is "the missing cornerstone of particle physics," said CERN director Rolf Heuer. This "milestone in our understanding of nature" essentially confirms that the universe was formed the way scientists believe it was. Two teams of atom-smashing researchers at CERN's Large Hadron Collider independently verified, with 99.99997 percent certainty, the new subatomic particle, which is a near-perfect fit for what physicists have expected of the Higgs boson since its existence was first theorized 48 years ago. "It's the Higgs," British physicist Jim Al-Khalili tells Reuters. "The announcement from CERN is even more definitive and clear-cut than most of us expected. Nobel prizes all round." Discovery was recently retired, and has been ferried from her home in Florida to it’s final resting place, the Udvar-Hazy Center, an annex of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Air and Space Museum. Not only is the entire process of ferrying a shuttle a technological marvel in and of itself, the photos that Nasa takes aren’t half bad, either.

A new class of planet has emerged from the buzzing masses of celestial spinners, a type unlike the rocky, gassy and icy worlds shuffling around the solar system.

The poster-planet for this new order is GJ 1214b, first discovered in 2009 and now shown to be a steamy, water-rich sphere. Scientists Accidentally Discover Rare Monkey Previously Thought Extinct

Scientists working deep in the jungle of Indonesia have proven that, sometimes, the best discoveries happen by accident.

Hoping to capture images of orangutans and leopards, the team set up cameras in the Wehea Forest on the eastern tip of Borneo island in June, the Associated Press reported. But upon viewing the photos, the researchers were shocked to see extremely rare Miller’s Grizzled Langurs, which until now have never been photographed. Given the lack of preexisting images, the scientists initially struggled to confirm their startling discovery, but soon enough, the answer was clear.

Huge Ancient Roman Shipyard Unearthed in Italy

The Largest White Dwarf in the Universe --A "Hot Zone" for Life

Looking like an image out of Will Wright's video game, Spore, M 27, or NGC 6853 is a planetary nebula in the constellation Vulpecula, at a distance of about 1,360 light years. Its central star, a white dwarf, is larger than any other known white dwarf in the universe. Also known by the absurd name, the Dumbbell, it contains knots marked by a central region of dark and bright cusped knots and their associated dark tails. The knots vary in appearance from symmetric objects with tails to rather irregular tail-less objects. Similarly to the Helix Nebula and the Eskimo Nebula, the heads of the knots have bright cusps which are local.

New Monkey Species Discovered in Remote Amazon
