'Thor 2: The Dark World' Trailer Reveals Unlikely Companion

Media_httprack2mshcdn_gohdm

The first official trailer for the upcoming Thor 2: The Dark World is now online.

This full-length trailer shows Jane Foster in Asgard and reveals more about the plot, which includes a new, ominous threat and, perhaps, an unlikely new companion for Thor.

Destruction and battle scenes abound and, as is customary in superhero sequels, Thor and his love for Foster seem to be tested to their limits.

Examples of Creative Movie Poster Redesigns

Media_httpdemortalzco_tzott

One of the best ways to become a better designer is to practice. As Ira Glass once famously said, the best way to get better at creative work is to do a huge volume of it. And when you’re practicing design work, you get to design things the way you want them made – not your client, or your boss – and so it can be a lot more enjoyable. One of my favourite things to practice designing is movie posters, because there are so many different directions that you can go in, and so many different themes, characters or scenes that you could cover.

Grunge Minimalist Posters Illustrating Famous Movie Quotes

Media_httpwwwdesignyo_bpshf

Making posters related to famous movies is somehow popular these days among designers. There are a lot of them doing it and they are each creating the posters in a certain style. For example, Jay Quann created this series of posters which illustrate famous movie quotes and a significant minimalist image which is relevant for the quote or the movie itself.

This is an interesting concept and there are a few posters that people might like hanging in their office or, why not, at home. For the time being, these are the only posters available, but we are surely hoping that he makes a few more because there are so many movies that people can relate to and so many really good lines that are famous.

Double Exposure: What Happens When Exposing The Same Film (Or CF) Twice

Media_httpfarm8static_zkjuw

Double Exposure is something most of us who ever had a film camera experienced at least once. By accident. It happened when the film got stuck, or when we used a used film again by mistake. With the digital age coming in and replacing film, in-camera double exposures became a very rare kind of photography, but in recent years, many DSLRs added the option to create a double exposure in camera, and this old style came back to life. Check out these great examples of Double Exposure found on Flickr.

To create in-camera double exposure, just find the “Multiple Exposure” option under the ‘Camera’ sub-menu, in both Canon and Nikon cameras. Set it to capture 2 images, and take your shots. Very simple with great and creative results. Creating double exposure in post processing is as easy: Basically all you have to do is to add 2 images to 2 different layer, and set the top one to ‘screen’ blending mode.

Media_httprack1mshcdn_xrzcc

Marvel Studios dropped an extended trailer for Iron Man 3 Tuesday, and it looks like fans are in store for a whole lot of superhero action. The preview gives us a glimpse at Tony Stark and his entire army of high-tech help.

Of course, only Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., gets the iconic red and gold outfitting, but the rest of his warriors have the same set of gadgets fans have grown accustomed to seeing on Iron Man.

Film Design Awards Finalists Screening at SXSW Next Week

Media_httpfontfeedcom_jqmbi

In his recent post on Wide Screen, the Yahoo movies blog, Will Perkins wonders where the Oscars for Best Title Sequence were at the recent ceremony. Indeed, although this area of filmmaking is already recognised at the Emmies with the Emmy Award For Outstanding Main Title Design, it still is overlooked at most other award shows for the film industry. Fortunately Ian Albinson, founder and editor-in-chief of the influential Art of the Title website, and a principal of the motion design studio Albinson Design, is again hosting the unofficial Oscars for Film Title Design next week, on March 11 at SXSW 2013.

Now entering its 4th year, the SXSW Film Design Awards recognise Excellence in Poster Design and in Title Design. I had the pleasure to attend last year’s screening of the finalists and highly recommend it even if you only have a passing interest in film title design. This year’s presentation of the best title sequences of 2012 will open with an informative conversation between award-winning main titles designer and broadcast editor Jay Bond and host Ian Albinson. Bond is co-founder of Oily Film Company Inc. who were responsible for 2012 Film Design Award-winner Les Bleus de Ramville. And if you can’t make it to SXSW, you can watch all the finalists in the gallery on Vimeo by clicking the images in the list below.

The Incredible Creation (and Destruction) of an Entire City in The Avengers

Media_httpimggawkeras_bmuik

Almost a third of The Avengers may have been set in New York, but as this video from Industrial Light & Magic's YouTube channel shows us, hardly any of the filming took place in the Big Apple itself. Since actually filming in New York would have been difficult—what with the many road-blocking restrictions and the city generally looking down on setting their streets and/or citizens on fire—almost everything had to be digitally recreated.

Beautiful cinematic photography by Raúl González

Media_httpfarm9static_bhchw

Raúl González was born in Malaga though he lived most of his life in Mallorca, Spain. His love of photography was born with him, as it is something he had inherited from his father who always had a small Kodak Instamatic in hand wherever he went. It took Raúl a while to figure out what he enjoyed photographing most, which is mainly street photography with special emphasis on street portraits, old scooters, and vintage cars and bikes. I also enjoyed looking at how he processes his photos and how his gives them this beautiful, elegant cinematic feel.

Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness Trailers From Last Night's Super Bowl

Media_httpimggawkeras_lhbhc

If you hate football but love cinema: no problem! Here are the trailers for Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness which aired during last night's game—without any sports involved.

The Iron Man 3 trailer (above) mixes a reasonable amount of previously seen footage with some new—the highlight being a scene where Stark plucks falling passengers out of the sky following some sort of airplane disaster. It still looks amazing.

Elsewhere, the Star Trek trailer (below) gives absolutely nothing away, but is dramatic and full of Benedict Cumberbatch. So... what's not to love? Kick back for a couple of minutes and whet your appetite for films to come.

30 Examples of Creative Movie Posters

Media_httpmachoartsco_oaprd

Movie posters are designed to grab our attention, and to draw us into the world of the film. They are designed to generate a feel of what to expect from a film and invite us in. Posters usually only have a limited time to influence us so the best way to pique our interest is to design a visually creative poster. Some of the more creative posters come from when the film is based on a unique concept or of a dark subject matter. However, just because the movie is a ‘chick flick’ does not mean the poster has to be just a simple, boring design as demonstrated by some of the works below.

Before and After Special Effects from Various Notable Scenes

Media_httpfstoppersco_gitbz

Special effects are crazy and if they’re overused, can be off-putting (I’m looking at your Star Wars Episodes 1-3). But used right, and special effects can make a scene and drastically reduce set budgets. Check out these before and after shots of rather notable sets that we stumbled upon, including a pair from everyone’s favorite zombie show, The Walking Dead.
