How To Redesign a Logo

Media_httpibrandstudi_lijft

Personally, I think that people use too frequently terms as branding and rebranding, redesign, or brand identity. In this context, each one has an opinion; the multitude of viewpoints is welcomed but these must be based on a solid background which is not the case for the majority of individuals. My idea has at its foundation the huge numbers of clients that misuse the branding and logo design vocabulary. Yep, we should be tolerant and forgive the incorrect use of some terms but we can’t ignore when wrong ideas are strongly advocated. More concrete, a very good friend of mine told me about a client that asked for a logo redesign because it’s more than a year since it wasn’t modified. Well, just because time passes, it isn’t a valid reason to redesign a logo!

Examples of Creative Movie Poster Redesigns

Media_httpdemortalzco_tzott

One of the best ways to become a better designer is to practice. As Ira Glass once famously said, the best way to get better at creative work is to do a huge volume of it. And when you’re practicing design work, you get to design things the way you want them made – not your client, or your boss – and so it can be a lot more enjoyable. One of my favourite things to practice designing is movie posters, because there are so many different directions that you can go in, and so many different themes, characters or scenes that you could cover.

LinkedIn releases redesigned iPhone and Android app with big, bright news stories

Media_httpcdn3sbnatio_brvhc

Today LinkedIn is releasing an overhauled iPhone and Android app, as well as a matching mobile website, all with a cleaner, sleeker layout that makes it much easier to navigate. The company's old design featured a sequence of nonstop gray blocks that were packed with information, but now LinkedIn is replacing those with big and bright tiles that give more room to each of the stories in the news stream, similar to the iPad app that it released last year. Larger photos and text fill up every story, and each update is separated by a simple break between the tiles. The new app also replaces the previous version's icon-based navigation menu with a left-hand sliding pane, which includes personalized shortcuts and generally lets users move around the app more quickly.

What The Pinterest Redesign Means For Brands

Media_httpwwwfastcomp_gdyig

The prominence of Pinterest in social media after only three years proves just how user-friendly it has been from the outset: By February 2012 it was already driving more traffic than Google+, YouTube, and LinkedIn combined. No wonder marketers have been scrambling over each other to set up accounts.

Pinterest has recently re-styled some of its features, meaning that brands can get even more out of the image-sharing site. I’ve put together some of the top tips and tricks to using Pinterest for your brand so you can make the most of its slick new look.

Apple updates Podcasts app with custom stations, on-the-go playlists and less 'skeuomorphic' design

Media_httpcdnthenextw_dnokh

Apple has updated its much-maligned Podcasts app for iOS with custom iCloud-synced stations that update automatically when new episodes of those podcasts are posted. The new app also allows you to create an on-the-go playlist of podcast episodes, just like iTunes does.

The new stations and on-the-go playlists are just a part of the app’s revamp of syncing though. The new stations are also stored in iCloud and will sync across all of your devices, staying up to date. Any playlists that you sync from iTunes will also now appear in Podcasts, fixing a major problem that heavy podcasts listeners had with the app.

10 Creative Logo Re-Designs

Media_httpenfuzedcomw_leamc

I’m a huge fan of Dribbble, I’ve spent countless hours browsing the site, getting ideas, and sparking my own creativity. If you haven’t heard of Dribbble by now then it’s safe to say you’ve been hiding under a rock so I suggest you go check it out now.

Anyways, one of my favorite playoffs that I followed was the Global (Re) Brands Playoff. Designers had their go at re-designing a known companies logo that they thought needed it, or that they just felt like giving their own take on. So I picked 10 of the most creative ones to show off below.

It's Hard To Believe How Drastic The Changes To Facebook Have Been Over The Years

Media_httpstatic4busi_agdzt

Facebook has made some pretty significant changes to its web platform since launching back in 2004.

What started off as a place for college students to connect with each other has grown into the world's largest social network.

In Facebook's maturation, its design has also evolved quite a bit. (Although it seems that every time Facebook makes even a subtle change, users become outraged.)...

Hands On With the New Facebook

Media_httprack0mshcdn_dniws

Still in line for the new Facebook News Feed? Want to take a look at the menu while you're waiting for a table? We've got you covered. Check out the gallery above.

The News Feed changes, which start kicking in for users Thursday, aren't just about making the site look cleaner (and more Google+ like) or increasing the size of photos. It's about giving you more options than you could possibly want for how to view content on Facebook.

For the first time in a long time, Facebook is actually making some of those feeds chronological. "All Friends," "Following" and "Photos" will appear in the order they came in — though this is still an experimental arrangement, a company spokesperson said.

And besides, even chronological order means the algorithm is making decisions for you on which of your friends you're most likely to want to see content from.

25+ awesome redesign concepts

Media_httpnetdnawebde_mxekj

Not every designer gets the chance to work on a high-profile redesign. In fact, the vast majority will never have that chance. At least not officially.

But that doesn’t mean they don’t have some amazing ideas about how sites like Facebook, Twitter, CNN, and other big-name sites should look.

That’s why a lot of designers take on conceptual redesigns of high-profile sites as personal projects. Designers aren’t constrained by a client spec when working on solo projects like this, meaning they’re free to innovate and take risks.

Here I’ve rounded up more than two dozen awesome redesign concepts for sites like Amazon, IMDb, Facebook, Twitter, Groupon, and more, to inspire you to tackle your own concept designs.

Yahoo Homepage Gets A Risky But Overdue Facelift

Media_httpreadwriteco_ryaob

A homepage redesign would hardly be noteworthy when it comes to most sites on the Web - but for Yahoo, It's a revolution.

Yahoo - long in the tooth among its rivals - doesn't change early or often, historically speaking. But Wednesday the company rolled out a much-needed update to its cluttered Web hub, Yahoo.com. Marissa Mayer, the company's refreshingly bright-eyed new CEO, just keeps picking up the pace.

Superb redesign will save lives

Media_httpnetdnawebde_drkge

One of the most challenging briefs any designer can take on is to design for a cross-cultural organization that needs to appeal to disparate groups from diverse backgrounds.

As designers we’re frequently reliant on communication through an informally agreed symbolism: green is a healthy color; slab-serifs are masculine. Except that when dealing with global audiences the message can be skewed, leaving organizations to run parallel branding; throughout the world the red cross is known for supplying medical aid in warzones, except where the red crescent has to be used instead.

Pinterest Is Testing A New Look

Media_httpstatic1busi_ofyzh

Remember Pinterest?

The site for "pinning" photographs and other images of interesting objects—think Tumblr, but organized thematically rather than chronologically—is testing out a new look, software engineer Vy Phan reports on the company blog.

The goal of the redesign (click the image to the right to enlarge it) is to make the homepage easier to navigate and to show more related images on the detail pages for a specific pinned image. That, in turn, should mean people spend more time on the site.

Google Images gets redesigned, focuses on speed and metadata

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_rygij

Page and Co. have just unveiled a new look for Google Images that places a premium on metadata visibility, speed and slick looks. After gathering feedback from both users and webmasters, Google redesigned its image search to feature relevant information right next to images and speed load times by no longer loading source pages behind selected graphics. Mountain View also designed the new layout with keyboard surfing in mind, to boot. The new UI isn't available across the board quite yet, but the search titan says folks will start to see the refreshed UI in the next few days.

Would You Use Facebook if It Looked This Insanely Different?

Media_httpimggawkeras_ufxcg

Facebook is what church and bathing used to be: a daily, comforting, familiar ritual. And so it's not without cause that people go nuts whenever it's redesigned. But if you thought Timeline was radical, check out this (unofficial) prototype.

The mockup, by Australian art director & designer Fred Nerby, drops the vertical look we've been using for over half a decade, takes a sledgehammer to it, and then rearranges it in a series of tiles and panels, swimming and flipping around each other like a cross between Windows Metro and—dare I say it—New MySpace. But in a good way.

A Showcase of Creatively Redesigned Movie Posters

Media_httpwwwunderwor_wosqg

As a designer, it’s often beneficial to get out of your comfort zone and work on something that you’re not often used to. If you usually spend your time working on client work, there are some huge benefits to trying something completely different. Designing a movie poster requires a different set of skills to designing a logo, brand identity or website – and you can often learn new things or new approaches to design that can later influence your client work. It can also be fun to work on something you’re not used to, and is a great way to get the creative juices flowing.

Movie posters in particular can be surprisingly different to work on than most client work – and the reason is because of the lack of constraints. While client work has to have a particular style, appearance or approach, a movie poster can go in any direction. Staring at a blank canvas can be a daunting challenge, but once you have a direction that you’re happy with the results can be truly stunning.
