Google wants to turn .search into a top-level domain that any search service can use

Media_httpcdn3sbnatio_vgaei

Some of Google's competitors have objected to its request for several top-level domains — including ".search" — but the company has clarified plans that would open up the use of those domains to other companies and services. As reported by TechCrunch, the project is outlined in a recent letter to ICANN from Google's domain registry, Charleston Road Registry. In the case of the .search domain, the company would operate a "dotless" domain — http://search, for example. Along with a redirect and a "new technical standard," however, the results a user would see would be from the search service that the user themselves had designated.

Google Images gets redesigned, focuses on speed and metadata

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_rygij

Page and Co. have just unveiled a new look for Google Images that places a premium on metadata visibility, speed and slick looks. After gathering feedback from both users and webmasters, Google redesigned its image search to feature relevant information right next to images and speed load times by no longer loading source pages behind selected graphics. Mountain View also designed the new layout with keyboard surfing in mind, to boot. The new UI isn't available across the board quite yet, but the search titan says folks will start to see the refreshed UI in the next few days.

Inside a new Facebook search – the good, the bad and the creepy

Media_httpbetaimagest_uibag

I’m staring at my computer screen, completely paralyzed by which words to type into the search field.

It’s been years since such a simple task has rendered me useless. The last time I couldn’t think of anything to type was back when Napster was illegal, and my brain would shut down every time I tried to think of another low-quality song to add to my collection of zillions.

Here's What Using the New Facebook Search Looks Like

Media_httpimggawkeras_njfir

Facebook Graph Search is an amazing feature with a terrible name. It takes the massive, inordinate amount of personal information and experiences you've charted over the years, and pulls them up with a few keystrokes. Watch it in action.

Although Graph Search isn't as speedy as I'd like—not as smooth as Google—the thing is still a beta. It's also a massively intensive process, scouring piles of data you didn't even know existed. But speediness aside, it's a ton of fun. Put aside utility for a moment. Open Graph gives you a new way to reflect on yourself online, and for a billion vain Internet denizens, a new way to self-obsess (or hey, even self-examine) is tremendous. Timeline made your Facebook life beautiful. Now Open Graph is starting to feed it directly into your brainpan. This is a nostalgia crack pipe.

And, sure, it's useful—I can't imagine many people clicking around the Facebook cosmos when they can just search through it instead.

An Old Eric Schmidt Interview Reveals Google’s End-Game For Search And Competition

Media_httptctechcrunc_ffdqx

Google was cleared of anti-competitive accusations yesterday by the Federal Trade Commission, but a long-forgotten interview with Chairman Eric Schmidt reveals that the search giant may be on an inevitable road to monopoly anyways.

Microsoft and critics allege that when Google prominently displays its own predicted best answers above all search results, it unfairly favors its own services above other niche search engines, like travel and shopping websites. But, as Schmidt told Charlie Rose in 2005, Google searches do yield one perfect result...

SEO Companies: Should You Hire One?

Media_httpcdninstants_azfvm

When you type out any search word, Google or other search engines display sites that they believe are authoritative and relevant to the words typed in. The relevance is measured by making an analysis of the content in the words. The authoritative aspect is measured based on the quality of the page content, the number of pages linked to the page and so on.

Media_httpwwwinccomup_hqhai

Is your website living in a dark corner of the Web? That's no place for a fledgling start-up, let alone a company that has already proved its merit in the marketplace. Languishing on the fringes of the Internet means customers are not finding your site, and they are not finding your products and services.

Adding metatag keywords is no longer enough to draw Web visitors. What follows are tips designed to produce real results. My recommendation? Google's Search Results Page Looks Different Now

Media_httpimggawkeras_lcptd

Google search results are like the old beat up recliner of the internet. Your butt's always there, and if anything changes, you notice. Well, Google changed the way its search results look. It's a relatively small change, but you're going to notice.

The biggest difference is that the bar along the left hand side of your searches is gone. This is where you used to break your search down into News, or whatever else. That function is now at the top of your results, along with the also relocated Search Tools. Search Tools moving means you don't have those two butt ugly calendars with custom dates in your line of sight, which is a plus. This change has been live a day or two, and should only be a negative if you're running a ton of searches (it's been killing me).
