Over the last two years of working at Buffer, I’ve come to learn that there are a few preconceived notions, stereotypes, clichés, and commonsense knowledge about startups that simply aren’t true.
I’d like to share some myths that I’ve discovered while working at a tech startup.
I have long been skeptical when it comes to viral marketing. That’s not to say that I believe that the concept of an idea spreading in a viral way is wrong, merely that I don’t believe it’s something that we can predict or control. I posted a piece back in 2011 about some Harvard research that cast doubt on the traditional notions of how ideas spread through a social network.
Many freelance consultants have a rather hit-or-miss approach to marketing their services. In truth, quite a few consultants do not learn to market themselves in the early days of their businesses because they are lucky enough to start out with business in hand.

I find it interesting that we hear about so many things that are bad for us, and yet we don’t know for sure if what we hear is true or not. It’s happening even faster now that the Internet can spawn a viral article in about as long as it takes to drink that glass of water in the first place.
