Swift Web Development Techniques for Startup Landing Pages

Media_httpdesignmagwp_rchod

When launching a new startup online you need to consider the features which will draw attention. Visitors can often be easily distracted when browsing the Internet. So ask yourself what value does your page really offer to the average visitor? Developers should think about these topics from a user experience point-of-view. Then the process of constructing usable website layouts should be a whole lot simpler.

I want to use this article for sharing a few tips and techniques on building startup landing pages. The process is not easy and doesn’t provide any foolproof method. Interesting features will change based on the type of service or product you are selling. But I do not think these generic models are too overbearing after you work out the kinks fitted into each design.

Late last week, AllThingsD reported hearing that Twitter co-founder Biz Stone was close to launching a new mobile startup called Jelly. Stone confirmed Monday that he is working full time on the startup, but says that it won't be launching anytime soon.

"News of Jelly emerged unexpectedly early so I’ll wait a bit to share more about the team," Stone said in a blog post on the Jelly website. "In the meantime, I’ll say this. Jelly will be for everybody, it will be developed first and foremost for mobile devices, and it will be free. But, it won’t be ready for a while."

Don't Build a Startup, Build a Business

Media_httptheindustry_mpjgi

I picked up a book recently called The $100 Start-Up. The name alone was enough to hook me — it sounded perfect for someone interested in the startup scene, and the title implied that it was flying in the face of the VC-funded status quo.

Unfortunately, after just a few pages, it became clear that the book wasn’t about startups at all; it was about starting a lifestyle business. Nothing wrong with that, but a lifestyle business just isn’t the same as a startup. The title misrepresented the product, in the hopes of cashing in on the popularity of a word.

The world of startups has attained such mystique that people are scrambling to get involved. The word alone can sell a book, even if that book is about something only tangentially related. Somehow, entrepreneurship has become de rigeur, and everybody wants a piece of the pie.

Examples of Beautiful, Creative Startup Homepages

Media_httpblogwebexpe_jhrif

One of the common trends amongst successful startups – or at least, startups that are popular and often talked about – is an eye for great design. Whether it’s the design of the product, or the website that markets it, design appears to be a common factor in most successful new businesses.

It’s unlikely that great design alone makes or breaks a company, but a beautifully designed homepage is likely to perform better. It increases the chance that visitors will stick around and read what you have to say, which can then result in more attention and more sales.

While larger, more established companies can get away with not focusing as much on design, the smarter startups know that it can help to swing the odds in their favour. Startups are also less concerned with playing it safe, and so they are often more comfortable with adopting some of the more adventurous and creative design trends.

The Startups Everyone Is Talking About At SXSW 2013

Media_httpstatic6busi_jtnkg

South by Southwest is an annual technology, film, and music conference in Austin, Texas. It's in full swing right now; tens of thousands of investors, entrepreneurs, writers, and early adopters have flown south to catch a glimpse of the Next Big Thing.

In previous years, Foursquare, Twitter, and Skype-owned GroupMe broke out during the conference. Each gave conference goers a better way to communicate and find friends during their time in Austin.

This year, the break out app seems to be Tinder, and it was already up-and-coming before the conference.

No one is using it in Austin, but everyone is talking about the Hot-or-Not dating app, from Ashton Kutcher to Path's Dave Morin.

4 Vital Conversations for Any Startup Team

Media_httprack2mshcdn_qqbja

Countless startup ideas are hatched among friends, colleagues, college roommates and family members. A late-night discussion between two friends could potentially become the next social network or mobile ad platform.

These relationships can be great breeding grounds for new ideas and innovation, but navigating business management with friends or family members can also be tricky. It's tempting to rush forward without anything in writing — after all, you know each other so well, you both want the same thing for your business, why waste time with the formalities?

While you may agree on everything today, issues will inevitably emerge. Maybe a friend gets married and decides it’s time to go back "to the office." Perhaps you’ll disagree over compensation, or whether to spend your whole marketing budget on a fancy launch.

Having some kind of partnership agreement in place from the start can be a helpful starting point to figure out any issues that arise down the road. It doesn’t need to be a fancy document, but your basic discussions should include four things.

Essential web design tips for start-ups

Media_httpnetdnawebde_jifgs

With so many new websites and start-ups springing up every day, a high-quality, professional web site is no longer optional — if it ever was. If you want your company to be taken seriously, let alone stand out, you need to have a design that is both memorable and professional.

However, getting to that point can be difficult. With the exception of start-ups focused on design, most new companies are not founded by people who are naturals at Web design and few have much in the way of resources to throw at the problem.

This can create a major dilemma for a startup, causing some to either push a non-designer into the role of Web developer or simply ignore the problem until they have more money and time down the road. However, if you want your company to thrive online, neither option is acceptable.

Economic Uncertainty Continues to Hinder Small Business

Media_httpwwwinccomup_jnxsg

A couple of months ago when you were coping with the looming fiscal cliff, you probably at least thought you would have some clarity when it was over. Whatever the outcome, small business owners would know the direction the country was heading and plan accordingly. However, with the fiscal cliff behind you, and March starting tomorrow, you're probably feeling an even greater wave of uncertainty. Almost a tidal wave.

Economic conditions in Europe are unsettling, with Italy's recent struggles and the downgrade of British debt. Meanwhile, constant talk of the sequester and spending cuts here in the U.S. only add to that edge.

No wonder the SurePayroll survey shows that small business owners continue to employ fewer people and growth has slowed.

Box CEO Aaron Levie Launched 15 Startups As A Teen

Media_httpstatic4busi_cjpzt

While other kids were out playing soccer or getting into trouble, Box CEO Aaron Levie and one of his best friends, Jeff Queisser, would hang out at home and launch startups.

They started something like 15 companies, Levie told ReadWrite''s Dan Lyons in an interview last week, including one called Zizap, which Levie described jokingly as "the fastest search engine on the Internet – minus Google."

Levie says that these childhood companies were often nothing more than a few Web pages. But a few were more ambitious like an Internet kiosk for hotels and malls, a Web portal for real estate listings, reports Forbes Victoria Barret.

What It Takes To Become An Entrepreneur

Media_httpstatic2busi_oafec

There are a lot of awesome things about going to work for yourself. You make your own schedule, you get to work from anywhere, you can decide who you work with and what projects you take on, you get to create a culture that is in line with your core beliefs and most importantly you get to put something in the world that is a product of you.

There are a lot of things that aren't spoken about before people take the jump to be an entrepreneur. Like how most of us wrap ourselves so deeply in our work and let it define us; how we throw ourselves so head first into the fire, we don't have time to think about getting burned; how our relationships, emotions and exhaustion come second to our employees, our clients and our investors; and how the money coming in is a product of everything we put out and everything we put out is a product of us. I have a lot of conversations with entrepreneurs, want-rapreuners and those who are in full-time positions with large companies looking to leave and start their own initiative, and everyone is pretty much asking each other the same questions.

Before taking the jump, I tell people a few things that I have learned and am consistently learning every day. While I try to do these things, there are still days where I forget to eat until 3 p.m. and have to call a "lifeline" for advice and support. But these are the most valuable lessons I've learned so far...
