iTunes Store at 10: how Apple built a digital media juggernaut

Media_httpassetssbnat_iwesd

Ten years ago this month, a music sector ravaged by Napster and largely ignorant of digital distribution found a savior of sorts in what was then called the iTunes Music Store. With its 99-cent unbundled songs, the service quickly became the only significant source for acquiring music legally online.

With iTunes, Apple had drawn the blueprint for distributing music, movies, books, and apps over the web. By supplying and tying together a music player, online store, and song-mangement software, Apple drastically simplified the entire music experience, defying the odds to build a music-retailing dynasty even as file sharing skyrocketed. A decade ago, Apple started to answer what would become an all-important question: how do you get consumers to pay for content again?

"They invented the digital music business," said Michael Nash, the former digital chief at Warner Music Group. "Apple really created the convergence of music and technology and showed everyone what the connected economy around content looks like."...

The Story Behind Dove's Mega Viral "Real Beauty Sketches" Campaign

Media_httpwwwfastcocr_gpfvo

Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches” campaign has officially gone viral: The YouTube video has over 8.6 million views at the time of this writing and has inspired commentary in tons of outlets, including the New York Times, ABC News, this very site, and in the Huffington Post, where a positive piece about the campaign has been shared almost 40,000 times on Facebook. It has inspired a parody of the original, and now even the blogger backlash to the ad--which complains that it focuses too much on a narrow definition of beauty--has itself gone viral. It’s a real mark of Internet success when even your backlash gets press.

Why good storytelling helps you design great products

Media_httpgigaom2file_akoak

One of the biggest flubs that product teams make is confusing designs that look great with designs that actually work well. It’s a simple mistake, but it can have grave consequences: If your product doesn’t work well, no one will even care how it looks, after all.

The best way I’ve found to get around this confusion is a technique called story-centered design. The idea is to create a series of narrative use-cases for your product that illustrate every step in the user’s journey through it. I’ve used this technique with dozens of startups and it always helps teams move past the surface visual details to make better decisions on what really matters: how their product finally works.

What's Inside Successful Entrepreneurs' Arsenals?

Media_httprack2mshcdn_aqfll

People despise being told the areas they're lacking and how they can improve. But, for a few tools that make winning easier, it's worth swallowing your pride.

A recent post by LinkedIn on the arsenals of highly successful entrepreneurs shows what weapons of war these figures use for battle and what they can't get through their workday without.

"Their answers ranged from smartphones, to bike lock keys, to brilliant colleagues," LinkedIn editor Francesca Levy told Mashable. She says more than one-third of the 60 influencers who contributed can't live without their mobile devices — no small surprise. But they're not using those devices just for Internet surfing, texting or even business calls. "Peter Guber, owner of the L.A. Dodgers, uses his phone to watch a live feed of his new AAA stadium being constructed. Craigslist founder Craig Newmark treats his gadgets as customer service tools because he self-identifies as a customer service rep and nerd."...

Get More Clients: How To Harness The Power of Testimonials

Media_httpmedia02hong_gohjy

Have you ever stumbled upon a testimonial that left you thinking who on earth would write such a strong statement about a freelancer‘s services? Testimonials are one of the most effective ways to legitimize your service claims and convince clients to hire you. Freelancers should know how to use them to their advantage.

I have seen a lot of online portfolios and believe that most of the freelancers fail to use testimonials to yield results. Some testimonials hold strong endorsements that prospective clients may relate to as a gimmick and others are too weak to help with a freelancer’s credibility.

Use it right though and it will be a great marketing tool to help improve your freelance business effectively.

22 Rules of Storytelling by a Pixar Storyboard Artist

Media_httpi2wpcomlaug_ejhui

Former Pixar storyboard artist Emma Coats tweeted a number of valuable storytelling rules during her time at the animation studio.

You admire a character for trying more than for their successes.

You gotta keep in mind what’s interesting to you as an audience, not what’s fun to do as a writer. They can be very different.

Trying for theme is important, but you won’t see what the story is actually about til you’re at the end of it. Now rewrite.

Once upon a time there was ___. Every day, ___. One day ___. Because of that, ___. Because of that, ___. Until finally ___.

Simplify. Focus. Combine characters. Hop over detours. You’ll feel like you’re losing valuable stuff but it sets you free....

3D-printed implant used to replace 75 percent of man's skull

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_hzids

A 3D-printed implant was used to replace 75 percent of a man's skull in a surgical procedure earlier this week. The prosthetic was constructed using an additive printing process, and was implanted following manufacturer Oxford Performance Materials receiving FDA approval to use the technology last month. News.com.au reports that the company can create similar implants in two weeks after receiving 3D scans of a patient's injured area. It believes that 500 people in the US each month could take advantage of the new process.

Box CEO Aaron Levie Launched 15 Startups As A Teen

Media_httpstatic4busi_cjpzt

While other kids were out playing soccer or getting into trouble, Box CEO Aaron Levie and one of his best friends, Jeff Queisser, would hang out at home and launch startups.

They started something like 15 companies, Levie told ReadWrite''s Dan Lyons in an interview last week, including one called Zizap, which Levie described jokingly as "the fastest search engine on the Internet – minus Google."

Levie says that these childhood companies were often nothing more than a few Web pages. But a few were more ambitious like an Internet kiosk for hotels and malls, a Web portal for real estate listings, reports Forbes Victoria Barret.

Media_httpstatic3busi_gxsgc

Now that Facebook's IPO is well into the past, and user-growth has stalled a touch, it's easy to sit back and take the incredible story of Facebook for granted.

Don't.

Facebook, which now has a billion users, reached 100 million users in just 10 quarters.

It reached 500 million just 12 quarters later.

That's beyond mind-boggling.

How'd it happen?

Over on question and answer site, former Facebook employees are telling stories about it. They're pretty fascinating – and certainly full of lessons for anyone else trying to build an audience/userbase.

The Journey of A Freelancer

Media_httpi1wpcomwebt_pedpz

My journey as a freelancer began back in 2007. At the time, I was the client, requiring marketing expertise with a small e-commerce site that I developed, after leaving school and whilst at college. Within a few months, I was working for the marketing expert that I had originally employed and within 6 months, I had my own list of clients; I was a freelancer on a small scale.

Freelancing has served me well. Having been at college and university for a total of 4 years, the need for cash was always intense. No job seemed to offer enough hours and even if it did, it certainly did not seem like it would pay my transport costs, let alone, leave me with enough for food, rent and everything else I’d need to indulge in, whilst enjoying student life!

Grandmas Get Investment From Mark Cuban

Media_httpstatic2busi_foxre

It's never too late to be an entrepreneur.

In last week's episode of "Shark Tank", two grandmothers from Yelm, Washington landed a $250,000 investment from Mark Cuban and Barbara Corcoran for their Ice Chips Candy company.

In exchange for the cash, Beverly Vines-Haines and Charlotte Clary gave up a 40% stake in their company, even though they were only looking to give up a 15% stake.

But these two are not your typical entrepreneurs. Vines-Haines used to be a romance writer and Clary has a B.S. in Natural Health. And between the two of them, they have 37 grandchildren.
