iTunes Store at 10: how Apple built a digital media juggernaut

Media_httpassetssbnat_iwesd

Ten years ago this month, a music sector ravaged by Napster and largely ignorant of digital distribution found a savior of sorts in what was then called the iTunes Music Store. With its 99-cent unbundled songs, the service quickly became the only significant source for acquiring music legally online.

With iTunes, Apple had drawn the blueprint for distributing music, movies, books, and apps over the web. By supplying and tying together a music player, online store, and song-mangement software, Apple drastically simplified the entire music experience, defying the odds to build a music-retailing dynasty even as file sharing skyrocketed. A decade ago, Apple started to answer what would become an all-important question: how do you get consumers to pay for content again?

"They invented the digital music business," said Michael Nash, the former digital chief at Warner Music Group. "Apple really created the convergence of music and technology and showed everyone what the connected economy around content looks like."...

iTunes is still the most popular way to buy music online

Media_httpicdn6digita_rsvfy

If you’re someone who actually purchases music online for download as opposed to opting for a streaming service, a new report suggests that you’re probably using Apple’s iTunes to do it. The study, released on Tuesday by the NPD Group, revealed that Apple’s music service continues to dominate the digital music download space for the final quarter of 2012.

The NPD study shows that iTunes had an impressive 63 percent marketshare for the final three months of last year, meaning that more than six in every ten music downloads were made through Apple’s storefront. That puts it significantly ahead of perpetual runner-up Amazon, which ranked second with 22 percent of the market.

Infographic: Can Google Play Beat iTunes and Amazon?

Media_httpsocialtimes_sddem

Could social sharing through Google+ and the rise of the Android give Google Play an advantage over iTunes and Amazon?

This infographic breaks down the online music market with a side-by-side comparison of the leading app stores.

Even with 500 million members, Google’s social network is still a limited playing field for Google Play, when Amazon and iTunes both link to Facebook, which has more than one billion users.

However, Google customers can share entire tracks with their friends on Google+, while iTunes and Amazon users can only “like” a track or share a link on Facebook.

iTunes 11 Hands-On: So Fast and Clean You Might Actually Come Back

Media_httpimggawkeras_orqay

iTunes 11 has arrived, dispensing with the outdated mediocrity of iTunes 10. (Download it here.) We couldn't wait to get our hands on the app's redesigned interface. Here's a look at the beautiful new design that might bring frustrated users back to Apple's beleaguered media player.

The first thing you notice when you fire up iTunes 11 is that it's so much faster than its predecessor. So fast. We can't believe it's iTunes. When scrolling through the app's new graphics heavy album view, the tiles fly by. Apple must have completely rewritten the app to get these results.

Apple Delays The Release Of A Redesigned iTunes

Media_httpstatic3busi_aqdxt

More news out of Apple this afternoon.

The company is delaying the release of a revamped iTunes. We can now expect it in November, a company spokesman tells Peter Kafka of All Things D.

"The new iTunes is taking longer than expected and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right. We look forward to releasing this new version of iTunes with its dramatically simpler and cleaner interface, and seamless integration with iCloud before the end of November," says Apple.

iTunes Set for Major Overhaul

Media_httpallthingsdc_jmxac

Apple’s iTunes media software is long overdue for an overhaul, and before the end of the year it will get one.

Apple is reportedly working on what’s being billed as the biggest update to iTunes since it debuted more than a decade ago. Sources familiar with Apple’s plans tell Bloomberg that the iTunes 11 overhaul will bring to the software tighter integration with the company’s iCloud storage service, improved search and discovery — presumably via Chomp, the app search engine it acquired earlier this year — and a new sharing feature that will allow users to send songs to friends.

Beyond that, details are slim. But, hopefully, Apple has put its considerable software and UI design acumen to work on streamlining iTunes or, better yet, rethinking it entirely. Because that’s really what it needs. Remember, when iTunes launched back in 2001, it was a music jukebox — nothing more. In the ensuing years it became a digital storefront for music. And video. And apps. And books. It became a device-syncing system and an app-management tool. And each feature was patchworked on with a bucket of preferences and dialogs that ultimately overburdened it with unnecessary complexity. So, while iTunes certainly works, it no longer “just works” — in other words, it no longer fulfills Apple’s dictum of intuitive simplicity.

15 Controversial Apps Pulled from iTunes in 2011, Banned Apps

Media_httpwwwtechahea_sndej

Chances are, if you’re an iPhone app developer, and your idea is controversial, you’re going to get booted. Apple has developed a reputation for staunch conservatism when it comes to what they allow into their App Store, and by conservative, we don’t necessarily mean “right wing.” We mean borderline Fascist.

The project is not Apple's $99 side project set-top box but a completely new product. It was Jobs' next major project, which prompted the company to throw Robbin at the head of the pack, sources told Bloomberg.

Google Planning Online MP3 Store? - Could Compete With iTunes

Media_httphothardware_kythi

According to a report by the New York Times’ Media Decoder blog, Google is planning to launch an online music store within weeks. The company is apparently in talks with the big record labels, trying to nail down the details.

Presumably, this online store would work in tandem with (or expand the capabilities of) Music Beta, Google’s months-old cloud music service. Music Beta is of course limited in that you can’t actually purchase music directly from it; you have to upload your own tunes in order to stream them to your various devices.
