iTunes Store at 10: how Apple built a digital media juggernaut

Media_httpassetssbnat_iwesd

Ten years ago this month, a music sector ravaged by Napster and largely ignorant of digital distribution found a savior of sorts in what was then called the iTunes Music Store. With its 99-cent unbundled songs, the service quickly became the only significant source for acquiring music legally online.

With iTunes, Apple had drawn the blueprint for distributing music, movies, books, and apps over the web. By supplying and tying together a music player, online store, and song-mangement software, Apple drastically simplified the entire music experience, defying the odds to build a music-retailing dynasty even as file sharing skyrocketed. A decade ago, Apple started to answer what would become an all-important question: how do you get consumers to pay for content again?

"They invented the digital music business," said Michael Nash, the former digital chief at Warner Music Group. "Apple really created the convergence of music and technology and showed everyone what the connected economy around content looks like."...

The Most Popular Printing Processes Explained

Media_httpdesignbeepd_jhifs

When designing for digital media, what you see is what you get. Your final design represents the actual final product. However, when you design for print media, your final design still has to be printed onto a physical medium, which means there is always a chance for distortion between your intended final design and the actual final product.

To ensure the best quality in your print media, you have to figure out which imprint method is right for your design. Knowing the benefits and limitations of the most popular printing processes makes it easier for you to design with print in mind.

Dish Bid For Sprint Could Revolutionize The Cable-Media-Telecom Industry

Media_httpstatic4busi_negaa

In a surprise move, satellite-TV operator Dish Network has made a $26 billion bid for Sprint, the U.S.'s third-largest wireless operator.

Sprint is already in the approval process to sell a majority stake to Japanese telecommunications firm Softbank.

Dish's bid is higher than Softbank's and may therefore trigger a bidding war between the two suitors.

Dish has offered about $7 a share for Sprint, with a mix of cash ($4.74 per share) and $2.26-worth of Dish stock. Dish's stock fell about 5% on the news, and the total value of the offer will continue to fluctuate based on Dish's stock price. Dish estimated that the initial offer was worth about 13% more than Softbank's offer.

Is Teaching Media Literacy Important?

The public Internet now houses over 630 million sites, a number that is growing each month. And each of those sites can have thousands or millions of individual pages (CNN.com, for example, has over 47 million pages indexed on Google, and adds thousands each day).

Free access to all that information is, on the whole, a very good thing for society. More people can stay informed, more voices can reach an audience. Writers aren't constrained by column inches or page counts or the cost of ink, meaning stories can be reported with greater depth, with more multimedia or with previously unimaginable interactivity.

But all that flowing information can also present problems when people are unequipped with the tools and skills necessary to make sense of it.

Three Rules for Creating the Perfect Press Release

Media_httpinspiration_uqope

Press releases are often eclipsed by new and exciting digital tools, but remain a solid way for brands and businesses of all shapes and sizes to get a message out. The dawn of digital has also had a profound effect upon their creation and distribution – effectively lowering the bar for accessibility in creating and distributing releases. However, as a side-effect – the competition to get releases in front of the eyeballs that matter has increased exponentially. So how can you navigate the perils of press releases and prevent yours from being drowned out?

The news from MWC is already starting to break: along with the Galaxy Note 8.0, Samsung has also introduced a new living room device called the HomeSync. On one hand, it's a media streamer that hooks up to your television and lets users stream photos, videos, and apps from their Galaxy devices to their television — at 1080p resolution. However, it's also a storage device unto itself with a 1TB drive for storing content.

Cyber Attacks Against Journalists Are On The Rise, Says Advocacy Group

Media_httptctechcrunc_ypawq

More journalists are now the target of cyber attacks, said the Committee to Protect Journalists. CPJ deputy director Robert Mahoney said cyber attacks on individuals and news organizations have increased notably over the past few years and that the practice serves as easy and inexpensive censorship. In a press conference with reporters, Mahoney cited the recent attacks on The New York Times, the Washington Post, Bloomberg News and The Wall Street Journal by Chinese hackers, but said other news organizations and journalists in Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and other regions had also been subjected to cyberattacks.

Attacks by hackers have ramped up so much that in a report last June, the CPJ said that it’s now “open season on online journalists,” with nation-states using customized software to exploit security flaws on personal computers and consumer Internet services in order to spy on users. Countries suspected in spying include the U.S., Israel and China. Journalists working in the latter country reported receiving regular warnings on their Gmail that their account had been targeted by what Google said was a “state-sponsored attack.”

How has Mark Zuckerberg been so private while running Facebook?

Media_httpcdntechicom_shjkm

For a man who built an online empire that is dedicated to make as much of our lives as public as possible, Facebook co-Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg has been able to keep his personal life in the dark and his media attention under control for the most part. We know very little about the man other than what he has been willing to share. Is he really that boring or is he simply a master of privacy in the public world he’s building?

Facebook's Mysterious Jan. 15 Event

Media_httpstatic1busi_gsavg

Yesterday, Facebook invited the media to attend an event at its headquarters on Jan. 15. "Come and see what we're building," it says ... but adds nothing more about what might actually be revealed.

The press has handled the announcement with its usual degree of calm and maturity -- and is totally freaking out, speculating wildly, and prophesying doom.
