Minimalist Icon Illustrations Depicting Relevant News Events

I like unique and interesting design projects and I love to feature them here for extra exposure and to inspire this site’s readers. This project has the basic idea of compressing news articles into one symbolic icon illustration relevant for the subject. It is a neat result from combining the creative expression with news coverage.

This is an innovative idea, a concept which makes icons usable not only for folders, buttons or calendars, but also for news headlines. It is a challenge more creative than usual and the design community loves it.

Here's Samsung's Brilliantly Bizarre S4 Event That Had The Tech World Freaking Out

Samsung is often accused of copying Apple. Last night, no one was saying that.

Its event to announce the Galaxy S4 was one of a kind. It was the sort of over-the-top ridiculous event that only Samsung would, or could, deliver. It must have cost millions of dollars.

In Radio City Music Hall, with Broadway actors, Samsung set up a bunch of scenes to act out all the new features of its phone.

For the most part it was panned by the techno snoots.

Personally, I thought it was pretty good. It took less than 50 minutes, so it didn't drag on. It wasn't yet another boring phone presentation where one guy stands on stage and drones on about specs that even I don't fully understand before another guy gets on stage and does a boring demo of a new app.

Google Glass to Hold Developer Events in Two Weeks

Google today invited the people who signed up for the $1,500 developer edition of its Project Glass wearable computing device to a set of developer events in San Francisco and New York City.

The company didn’t give a terrific amount of notice; the events are at the end of January and beginning of February, respectively. But developers will “have a device to use while on-site,” which is the real attraction.

The company said each Glass Foundry event will include “two days of full-on hacking” for people who have already signed up for the Glass Explorer Edition.

How To Watch Apple's iPad Mini Event Live

For the first time in a few years, Apple will live stream a product announcement.

We'll be live blogging the whole thing on SAI, but if you want to watch for yourself, here's what to do.

The stream will only work on Apple devices: Apple TV, Macs, iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. If you have an Apple TV, you'll see a new option appear in your main menu. It's called Events.

For all other devices, click this link to view the stream. It starts at 1 p.m. Eastern. You must use Apple's Safari browser.

Apple Will Unveil The iPad Mini On October 23

Apple will unveil the iPad Mini at a press event on October 23, according AllThingsD.

AllThingsD is very tight with Apple, so it's always correct with Apple event dates.

AllThingsD's sources didn't confirm a location but it is speculated that the event will be held on Apple's campus at its Town Hall auditorium.

Jim Dalrymple of the Loop has also cosigned the announcement.

The smaller iPad is rumored to have a 7.85-inch screen and will sport Apple's new annoying Lightning connector.

If Apple announces the device on October 23, it'll likely launch a week to 10 days later.

Facebook Events Are Finally Super Useful

We've been inviting people to and attending parties through Facebook for years and years and years, but only now are they finally easy to look at: calendar view is here.

The idea of putting all of your Facebook events (and friends' birthdays) onto a calendar within Facebook is so obvious that it's sort of sad that it took a "hackathon" until dawn to come up with it—but we're not complaining.

Facebook events now sport a calendar view, which is exactly what it sounds like. Instead of the current, stupid format which lists events you have in the coming days and then jumps to "later this month," now you have all of your stuff in a nice big calendar. It's a calendar. Ever used a calendar? It looks like that—bunch of boxes with things written on it and pictures of people who will turn a year older on that date. It progresses, inexorably, the march of time ever apparent. It's extremely useful, extremely simple, and extremely welcome.

We here at AllThingsD aren’t the most hardcore of gamers, but my colleague Tricia Duryee and I were there in full force to hear about Microsoft Xbox’s SmartGlass app, Sony’s new game titles, and Nintendo’s nod toward the “holiday season” for the release of its upcoming Wii U console. We also roamed the floors of the Los Angeles Convention Center to capture the best images from the event.
