Screenshots: All The Best Features In The New BlackBerry Phones

Media_httpstatic6busi_vdmjh

BlackBerry officially unveiled its brand new operating system called BlackBerry 10 this week.

The OS will run on two new smartphones called the BlackBerry Z10 (a touchscreen-only phone) and the BlackBerry Q10 (a phone with a classic BlackBerry physical keyboard). The phones will launch in the U.S. in March (Z10) and April (Q10).

BlackBerry gave a bunch of industry analysts, tech pundits, and members of the press a Z10 to test out BlackBerry 10.

BlackBerry's Best Trick: Nailing Work-Life Balance

Media_httpimggawkeras_lbsda

Today BlackBerry demoed what it's calling BlackBerry Balance, a clever way of separating one's personal and work lives in one device. You don't see it as much these days but carrying two phones—one for business, one for pleasure—was commonplace not too long ago. I remember having a BlackBerry 6200 alongside my Sidekick 2; and I'm sure a lot of you remember those days as well.

But now that smartphones have been ingratiated into corporate IT infrastructures with beefed up security protocols, the need for work-issued BlackBerries has been on the decline. Not to mention the fact that it's cheaper for employers to just have you use your own phone and pay for it yourself. Now you can have both your work and personal lives live on one single device.

BlackBerry unveils BB10, and Z10 and Q10 smartphones: Can RIM beat out Microsoft for third place?

Media_httpwwwextremet_npnik

BlackBerry has taken the wraps off the BlackBerry 10 operating system, and the Z10 and Q10 smartphones. Yes, RIM is no more: the company is now called BlackBerry. The Z10, which is a full-bodied, 4.2-inch smartphone, will be available in the UK tomorrow, Canada on February 5, and the US sometime in March. The Q10, which has a hardware QWERTY keyboard and 3.1-inch square screen, doesn’t seem to have a launch schedule.

What RIM Needs to Prove with BlackBerry 10

Media_httpimggawkeras_bbayd

RIM's day of reckoning is almost here. Tomorrow, the once-mighty Canadian company will officially unveil its new BlackBerry 10 operating system, along with new hardware. It's a chance at rebirth, reinvention, and getting out from under its walking corpse reputation. But for that to happen, RIM needs to prove it's back on the right track.

Here are a few of the things we'll be looking for. If they all fall into place, we might just have a comeback on our hands. If not? Lights out.

What we know about BlackBerry 10

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_bhzkf

Despite -- or rather thanks to -- major delays in releasing BlackBerry 10, RIM has let quite a bit slip about its upcoming operating system and related BB10 devices. We've had more than a year to absorb leaks, rumors and official information, after all, so it's no surprise that we have a very good idea of what to expect when Waterloo pulls back the curtain on January 30th. That doesn't mean things are as plain as day, though; the deluge of blurrycam shots and carrier screens have provided an almost indigestible amount of information about BB10, and we don't blame you if you can't keep the story straight. We're here to parse the madness, though, so read on to find out what to expect at tomorrow's launch event.

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_kwsdg

The BlackBerry Experience is almost ready to begin. In 24 hours RIM will deliver upon us a wholly new operating system, the QNX-based phone OS that 'Berry fans have been awaiting for years. And, if that weren't enough, we're expecting two totally new smartphones to run it, one being the frequently leaked Z10, the other a somewhat more mysterious QWERTY model. Are you ready to see them for real? Set your browsers to our liveblog page right here and join us at the time listed below.

RIM: A brief history from Budgie to BlackBerry 10

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_wrezl

Listen to much of the chatter about Research in Motion today and you'll hear the launch of BlackBerry 10 described in almost apocalyptic terms. All-or-nothing. Live-or-die. Make-or-break. There's some truth to the extreme language, but BlackBerry 10 is really just the latest in a series of transformational moments for a company that has frequently had to adapt to survive. In that sense, the appreciation for crises and opportunities is almost as natural as breathing for RIM. What's less certain is whether or not the company in 2013 is as capable of wholesale shifts in strategy as it was for much of its not quite 30-year history. Read on to see why reform is possible, but won't be quite so easy.

Sorry Apple, the BlackBerry Z10 Is Hotter Than the iPhone

Media_httpimggawkeras_llhbu

I've always hated BlackBerry phones. Disgracefully ugly bricks they were—until BlackBerry 10. The BlackBerry Z10 is hot. Truly beautiful, elegant hardware. If the OS is as nice as it seemed at CES, I will totally snatch one up.

These BlackBerry Z10 vs iPhone 5 comparative renders by our friend Martin Hajek are great. Not only because they show off just how beautiful a phone RIM has built, but because they demonstrate why we should still care about BlackBerry. With hardware as lovely as this, it may still have a chance at coming back with a vengeance.

The comparative images were made by Martin using leaked physical data and pictures which are believed to be the real thing. I love that is has zero buttons. It does it all through the screen's touch abilities, and that's all you need.

RIM prepping Super Bowl ad to introduce BlackBerry 10 to the world

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_duzih

Get yo' popcorn ready. When your company is announcing the latest and greatest mobile OS, why not seize the opportunity to scrape up a few million bucks to make sure the entire world gets a proper introduction? Research in Motion will be forking out for a Super Bowl spot (which averages $3.8 million this year), as part of an effort to get the word out about BlackBerry 10. Let's just hope it's not shown the exact moment 40 million people head to the fridge. A little presser can be found past the break.

RIM Could License BlackBerry 10

Media_httpstatic2busi_ajpjc

RIM is essentially betting its entire company on the success of its new mobile operating system, BlackBerry 10. It'll officially unveil BB10 at a big press event on January 30 on it's own hardware, but RIM may also be open to letting other hardware manufacturers use it too.

In a recent interview with the German publication Die Welt that was passed around a lot this weekend, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said he'd be open to licensing BB10 to other manufacturers.

Here's what Heins said when asked about licensing BB10. Keep in mind this is a translated text using Google, so it's a little rough...

RIM Renames BlackBerry App World to BlackBerry World, Promises Music and Videos

Media_httprack0mshcdn_ruywb

RIM has changed the name of its app store, BlackBerry App World, to BlackBerry World, promising new types of content, such as music and videos.

The change comes days before the planned launch of RIM's new mobile platform, BlackBerry 10.

The new name reflects the new kinds of content RIM will make available to the store, which will be available under "Videos" and "Music" sections, though at the time of this writing those types of content still aren't available for purchase. RIM claims the new store will be a "one-stop shop for all of your entertainment needs."

Report: The Next BlackBerry Will Cost Less Than $199

Media_httpstatic5busi_ailkt

BGR has a huge feature on BlackBerry 10 with a 100-screenshot tour of RIM's next operating system.

BGR says this version of BlackBerry 10 is the "Gold Master," or the final version that will appear on new BlackBerry phones when they launch in a few weeks.

The source who provided the images also told BGR the new phone, called the BlackBerry Z10, will cost less than $199 on contract.

That leaves a lot of wiggle room, but it sounds like RIM is willing to sell its new phone on the cheaper side in the hope that people will choose it over other top-tier phones that cost $199 and up.

BlackBerry Z10 Goes Head-To-Head With iPhone 5 On Video

Media_https2wpcomwpco_qgjfp

When is a secret not a secret? When it’s featured in comparison videos ahead of an official product launch. The upcoming BlackBerry Z10 (which, if called something else or designed differently when it’s officially unveiled next week will actually blow everyone’s minds) is now starring in a video by German blog telekom-presse.at (via 9t05Mac), doing its business next to an iPhone 5. It provides a good look at how the two compare physically, but also how the two operating systems running each compare similar tasks.

RIM's mobile payment solution gets thumbs up from Visa

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_luhnr

The final pieces of the puzzle are falling into place just ahead of the big reveal on January 30th. The carriers are on board, there's apps galore and now Visa has approved RIM's Secure Element Manager (SEM) for its mobile payment system. Being given the green light means that BlackBerry wont have to worry about being upstaged by the flood of Android devices coming down the pipeline with NFC payment solutions embedded in them. It's also a major boost to the SEM platform developed by the Canadian firm which has already won the backing of many carriers in its homeland, like Bell, Rogers and TELUS, but has struggled to gain a foothold in the US. For more, check out the PR after the break.

BlackBerry Z10 shown in first hands-on video

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_kgjtf

We've had an early look at the BlackBerry Z10 already -- both from a leak of RIM marketing materials and from footage allegedly showing the handset's components -- but Austrian publication Telekom-Presse can lay claim to the first hands-on video with the phone. The seven-and-a-half-minute clip shows off the hardware in great detail -- including what looks to be a removable plastic cover on the backing -- and the narrator lists specs, including a 4.2-inch HD display, a dual-core 1.5GHz ARM Cortex A9 processor and 2GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage. According to the video, the Z10 weighs about 125 grams (4.4 ounces). Of course, the hands-on also demos the BB10 operating system, and it looks to run quite smoothly as the user carries out such gestures as swiping to reveal the BlackBerry Hub. We'll get an even better look at the Z10 when it becomes official, but for now jump past the break for a look at the video (natürlich auf Deutsch).

RIM Is Tanking

Media_httpstatic5busi_jcafb

Research In Motion has been down as much as 17.9% this morning.
The stock recovered slightly, and now it's down 13% after last night's earnings report.

This is the biggest one-day drop since June 29. Which, it just so happens, was the day after it reported earnings and announced 5,000 jobs would be cut.

Last night's earnings report safely beat expectations on the top and bottom line.

But on the earnings call, CEO Thorsten Heins put a scare in the market by saying the company's services revenue could be at risk.

70,000 Apps Rumored at BB 10 Launch

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_qiixh
via www.gadgetell.com">technologytell.com

We’ve been holding on long enough for the BlackBerry 10 to see the light of day. Hype, rumors, recent demos and product announcements but we are still six weeks from seeing anyone with the device in their hands. Regardless, when the 10 does actually drop, it’s falling right into a three-way cage match between itself and the two current kings of ‘smart’– Android and Apple’s iOS.

Perhaps because of the heated competition is why RIM‘s CMO Frank Boulben went on the record this week stating that his BlackBerry 10 will have roughly 70,000 apps to choose from on the date of its launch. Also, he was sure to distinguish that the apps he speaks of will be ‘quality apps’ (I’m guessing no Ginger Booth, sadly).

BlackBerry 10 Gets Demo'd in New York

Media_httpwwwtechnolo_ebwdz
via www.gadgetell.com">technologytell.com

Last week at New York Times DealBook: Opportunities for Tomorrow Conference, BlackBerry provided an exclusive preview of their new BlackBerry 10 smart device. Frank Boulben, CMO for BlackBerry and Vivek Bhardwaj, Head of Software portfolio were present for a hands-on demo, presented to some of the industry’s financial and economic key players.

The demonstration focused on some of the newest and coolest features coming to BlackBerry. Spotlighting on the new BlackBerry Hub feature, an all-in-one app for all interactions made from your phone — text or picture messages, e-mails, BBM, phone calls and social network alerts. This is against the norm, where each outlet has its own dedicated app.

Also, the new BlackBerry keyboard version drew a lot of buzz, despite the device being full-touch. “It goes to show the effort we’ve taken to make sure the keyboard on BlackBerry 10 feels like a BlackBerry keyboard,” said Bhardwaj.
