Early stage VC fund 500 Startups today held the first of several demo day events for the fifth batch of startups graduating from its accelerator program. It was a fun event, with 32 high-energy founders pitching their companies to a room full of investors and tech press.

All of the companies were compelling in their own ways, covering a wide range of technologies, geographies, and sectors — you can check out the full list right here. It was tough, but we narrowed down a list of some of our favorites.

BlackBerry 10 Gets Demo'd in New York

Last week at New York Times DealBook: Opportunities for Tomorrow Conference, BlackBerry provided an exclusive preview of their new BlackBerry 10 smart device. Frank Boulben, CMO for BlackBerry and Vivek Bhardwaj, Head of Software portfolio were present for a hands-on demo, presented to some of the industry’s financial and economic key players.

The demonstration focused on some of the newest and coolest features coming to BlackBerry. Spotlighting on the new BlackBerry Hub feature, an all-in-one app for all interactions made from your phone — text or picture messages, e-mails, BBM, phone calls and social network alerts. This is against the norm, where each outlet has its own dedicated app.

Also, the new BlackBerry keyboard version drew a lot of buzz, despite the device being full-touch. “It goes to show the effort we’ve taken to make sure the keyboard on BlackBerry 10 feels like a BlackBerry keyboard,” said Bhardwaj.

Hands On with Microsoft’s New Surface Tablet

A few minutes spent actually handling a prototype of Microsoft’s new Surface tablet reveals a solid device, combining a slightly bulky chassis with a clever Touch Cover keyboard that appears to work well - all powered by a Windows RT operating system that seems to to be a viable competitor to iOS and Android on these types of devices.

However you look at it, Microsoft’s new Surface tablet, released at a heavily hyped event in Los Angeles on Monday, is undeniably the most interesting product the company has revealed since the Microsoft Kinect motion-based controller. A very quick hands-on examination revealed real strengths, as well as some flaws.

Nintendo Wii U Pro Controller hands-on (video)

Although we managed to get our mitts on the Wii U and updated GamePad here at E3 following Nintendo's keynote, the recently unveiled Pro Controller turned out to be harder to find. We were thankfully able to visit the company's amusement park massive booth on the show floor where we discovered the wireless peripheral, along with a GamePad, tethered to a demo of the upcoming title, Rayman Legends.
