Google Glass Has Already Been Hacked By Jailbreakers

Media_httpbiforbesimg_evmdi

With a name like Glass, it was just asking to be cracked.

Just days after its release to developers, Google’s Glass headset has already been hacked to give users full control of its Android operating system, according to Jay Freeman, a well-known Android and iOS developer who tested a known exploit for Android on Glass yesterday and announced his success on Twitter Friday afternoon. The “root” or “jailbreak” technique Freeman found would potentially remove any restrictions Google might place on Glass, though it’s not yet clear exactly what those restrictions might be in consumer versions of the device...

You Won't Be Able To Wear Google Glass Until Next Year

Media_httpstatic1busi_ehauv

Google Glass won't be coming to the market this year after all.

We first saw the news on DVICE.

Even though Google has previously said it expects to release a fully-polished version of its computerized glasses by the end of the year, that no longer seems to be the case.

In an interview with BBC Radio 4, Google Chairman Eric Schmidt said Glass will not be made available to the general public until sometime next year.

How Google Glass Works [Infographic]

Media_httpmedia02hong_pdgpz

During the writing of this post, Google Glass is being shipped out to Glass Explorers. But alas it is only to early adapters and developers who had forked out the hefty price tag and only a portion of those who signed for it is actually getting a unit.

For the rest of us, we will just have to wait until Glass is more commercially available but if you’re like me, you probably wondered how this wearable gadget actually works. Well this simple inforgraphic by Martin Missfeldt explains the technology behind Google Glass. How images are projected onto the ‘visual layer’, what does a view behind Glass look like and how bespectacled enthusiasts can also join in on the fun.

Google Glass Has a 5-Megapixel Camera, 720p Video, and Long Lasting Battery

Media_httpicdn6digita_ubfce

The first Explorer Editions of Google Glass, which eager developers had to shell out $1500 for during Google I/O last year, have started shipping and to coincide with this, Google has provided an official specification sheet for the high-tech glasses. Anyone expecting Glass’ features to rival top-end smartphones is going to be disappointed, as the camera has 5-megapixels and the video camera shoots at 720p. Wi-Fi and an unknown version of Bluetooth are both installed, along with a total of 16GB of memory, 12GB of which will be usable. This will also sync with Google cloud storage.

Google Employs 'Hundreds' Of Humans To Sniff Out Ad Fraud On The Web

Media_httpstatic5busi_dlded

Fraud in online advertising is a huge business, we noted recently.

Botnets generate clicks automatically, at the same overall rates as humans, making them difficult to detect. Some publishers claim, and bill for, vast audiences even though few people in real life seem to have heard of their publications. And some web sites serve ads "below the fold," meaning beneath the area of the site displayed on your screen — charging clients for impressions that people can't see.

First Google Glass devices rolling off the production line

Media_httpcdn0sbnatio_wtqnq

Production of the first Google Glass units is being completed and the units will be shipped out to members of the early-access Explorer program in batches, likely within the next few weeks. The news comes from an email sent out to Google's backers (below) saying that "we’re seeing the first few devices come off the production line right now."

Here Are Google Glass' Tech Specs

Media_httpimggawkeras_agmrb

Google just released the official specs for Google Glass (after releasing the API too) and the futuristic frames come with 16GB (only 12GB will be usable) Flash memory, 5 megapixel camera for stills, 720p video recording, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth and a battery that can handle "one full day of typical use".

Of course with a product like Google Glass, its specs won't tell us how much we'll actually use the, um, specs. Here are the nuts and bolts of Google Glass...

Google wants to turn .search into a top-level domain that any search service can use

Media_httpcdn3sbnatio_vgaei

Some of Google's competitors have objected to its request for several top-level domains — including ".search" — but the company has clarified plans that would open up the use of those domains to other companies and services. As reported by TechCrunch, the project is outlined in a recent letter to ICANN from Google's domain registry, Charleston Road Registry. In the case of the .search domain, the company would operate a "dotless" domain — http://search, for example. Along with a redirect and a "new technical standard," however, the results a user would see would be from the search service that the user themselves had designated.

With Gmail approaching a decade, here’s how it has evolved

Media_httpcdntechicom_nmkca

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been over 9 years since Gmail was opened up in beta. When it was first launched, many thought it was an April Fool’s Day joke because it was launched April 1, 2004. Some joke, eh?

This Street View Hyperlapse Is The Coolest Thing You Will See This Month

Media_httpfstoppersco_bjyri

Yes, that is a bold claim, but hear me out. Sometimes something so creative yet so painfully simple comes along and just blows me away. This timelapse/hyperlapse video created using Google Street View is just one of those things. My mouth was agape the entire time I was watching this. Teehan+Lax Labs created this project by recording Google Street View movements all over the world and assembling them into a twisting and turning view of our world from the street.

Rumor: Google negotiating $1 billion acquisition of WhatsApp

Media_httpicdn6digita_nsjpo

Messaging app WhatsApp is in the negotiating phase over prices with Google in what could be Google’s next billion dollar acquisition, according to an inside source.

While the deal started four or five weeks ago, we’ve been told that WhatsApp is “playing hardball” and jockeying for a higher acquisition price, which currently is “close to” $1 billion right now.

We’ve suspected for some time now that a messaging app would be the next billion dollar acquisition deal following Facebook’s Instagram buy-out last year. 2012 was the year for photo-sharing apps, which you know everything about by now. So, 2013 has been dominating by the messaging app-meets social network market.

Google challenges US government's private data demand in court

Media_httpcdn1sbnatio_rhznu

Google is fighting back against National Security Letter, the secretive, controversial form of datarequest for data from the US government that bypasses the court process and comes with a gag order. The company has filed papers in a case called In Re Google Inc. Petition to set aside Legal Process; while the documents are sealed, Bloomberg reported on the nature of the filing. No details are currently available on the request itself, but the move is significant — Google would be the most prominent company yet to challenge an NSL.

Watch Google Show Off 4 Glass Apps

Media_httprack3mshcdn_ygore

During SXSW last month, Google held a session entitled “Building New Experiences With Glass,” where it offered developers information about Glass’ Mirror API, and demonstrated some of the apps that are already in development for Glass, such as Gmail, Path, and Evernote.

On Thursday, Google posted a video from that event on YouTube in full, giving everyone the opportunity to learn a little more about Glass and, more importantly, allowing developers to discover what will go into coding for the high-tech spectacles.

Google Decision To Go Into The Local Delivery Business Is Just Bizarre

Media_httpstatic6busi_gejff

Today, Google confirmed that it is going into the same-day delivery business--at least for a 6-month test in the San Francisco Bay Area.

The new service is called Google Shopping Express.

Google has included nine retailer logos on its Shopping Express site, including Target, Walgreens, Office Depot, and Toys R Us. These are presumably some of the retailers that those who order home delivery can buy stuff from.

Judging by a picture that Google included on the page announcing the service (see above), Google Shopping Express will feature well-dressed, neatly coiffed people driving around in Google delivery vans delivering stuff.

Google Glass and the Future of Head-Mounted Displays

Media_httprack2mshcdn_cijbi

Google Glass is arguably the most exciting innovation in mobile technology since the iPhone — and not just because Google hyped it with a spectacular skydiving stunt. Certainly, the field of wearable technology has been around for decades (remember calculator watches?), but with the backing of a multibillion-dollar company and state-of-the-art wireless tech, Google looks to really take it to the next level.

There's a reason, however, that the device, which Google officially unveiled about a year ago, probably won't reach consumer hands until 2014: Creating a head-mounted display that's reliable, useful and not-ridiculous-looking is hard. Just ask Vuzix, which has been in the space since 1997.
