10 Cures For TechnoStress

Media_httpreadwriteco_nvcpe

It's true: several of us (make that all of us) at Remodelista live on our laptops. We asked our SF writer/mindfulness practitioner guru Jackie Ashton to weigh in on the subject and give us ideas for managing our technology consumption.

Frank Lloyd Wright said it best: “If it keeps up, man will atrophy all his limbs but the push-button finger." Technology permeates every corner of our universe: our homes, our cars, our sidewalk strolls, even our free time. Like any healthy relationship, our daily interaction with technology (particularly with our handheld devices) should be guided by moderation and balance. If we approach technology use mindfully, we can be more productive, think more clearly, and best of all—we can feel happier doing it. Here are my ten secrets to managing technology...

Adaptive images: solving the responsive image problem

Media_httpnetdnawebde_zbusn

Responsive design isn’t just a change in layout or the use of media queries here and there, it is a mind-state and an action that has clear meaning.

Responsive design is essentially saying that we care more about the content than we have in the past. In fact, we care so much that we will even optimize content to be read and viewed on devices that haven’t been launched yet.

In essence, we are trying to present information as clearly as possible and be as efficient as possible all at the same time. Here’s a common misconception; mobile first means designing as though your entire site revolves around the mobile phone. That isn’t quite accurate. Mobile first simply means to design for the simplest experience first, which often leads us to cut out overheads that we are experiencing or may experience in the future.

Media_httpgigaom2file_npked

Instead, we need to find a more elegant middle ground, with policy that encourages online creativity and economic growth while also protecting the intellectual property of musicians, filmmakers, and others. It’s not as exciting to advocate for a compromise, but that’s what we need.
