Successful People Who Work From Home

Media_httpstatic6busi_cbymh

Marissa Mayer recently demanded all Yahoo employees work in a corporate office. They're no longer allowed to work from home, unless it's with good reason.

Yahoo has faced world-wide backlash for this decision.

That's because many people have proved to be successful, despite not working in an office environment.

"Yours truly has never worked out of an office, and never will," Virgin founder Richard Branson wrote shortly after the Yahoo memo was leaked.

How Your Workplace Can Speed Innovation

Media_httpstatic4busi_lsssd

Picture this: A person sits alone in an office, head in hands. Fingers drum on the desktop. The clock ticks as a deadline looms. Then: "Eureka!" Cue the light bulb, the widened eyes, the "I just had a brilliant idea" music.

As we all know, creativity doesn't always work that way. Innovation is critical when it comes to success in business, whether for a huge corporation or a tiny start-up; and more often than not, the seeds of that innovation will come from the minds of talented employees. But leaving people alone in rooms isn't the best way to spark their mad genius. (Unless, of course, they're all Steve Jobs.)

So how to achieve that "eureka" moment? These days, the most creative professional environments encourage employees to collaborate, share, and develop ideas with their peers. And building a workplace that fosters inspiration doesn't happen by accident.

The Future Of The Workplace

Media_httpstatic6busi_kedcx

Despite the massive changes we've seen in our personal lives from technology, the workplace has been remarkably static. Many of us still work in big offices, in cubicles, and at the same desk and computer every day.
Not for much longer.

The workplace of the future is going to be less centralized, more mobile, and more flexible than anything most people outside the startup and freelance economy have experienced before.

And the trend's going to be accelerated by rapid uptake of mobile technology, economic volatility, and the global war for top talent.

We've illustrated where things are going using charts, data, and examples of the changes that have already begun.

See What The Desks Of 39 Successful People Look Like

Media_httpstatic1busi_tynhz

Successful people don't mess around when it comes to their working space.

A desk has to be a place where you can be productive, healthy, and comfortable for many hours, day in day out.

Craigslist founder Craig Newmark prefers a sparse desk, while Peter Guber, co-owner of the L.A. Dodgers, keeps his desk "crowded" with memorabilia "to create an un-intimidating environment for business associates."

This Is The Office Of The Future

Media_httpstatic1busi_rcevy

The office of the future is going to look a lot different than it does today.

PSFK Labs, a trends and workplace consultancy with clients including Apple, BMW and Nike, just published a new report, The Future Of The Workplace, that predicts how this will look.

In short, offices will be very mobile with high information flow from the top down. And they'll also look a lot different, with sound-proof pods instead of cubicles, and TED-inspired meeting spaces.

We caught up with Piers Fawkes, president and founder of PSFK briefly about the report, which includes 1,200 data points from experts, creative agencies and other sources. "I’m really interested in the idea of talent on demand," he tells us. "Staffing in a company needs to be flexible and the office needs to be adaptive. Using algorithms to efficiently manage staff within the organization is all about efficiency and productivity."

Pocket Change's office also brings street art indoors with a 42-foot-long mural created by a local artist. It only seems apt for a space that used to be an art gallery. What's more, employees seeking downtime can huddle in the communal picnic table area or make use of the custom bar and beer tap.

Report: Microsoft Office Is Finally Coming to iOS and Android in Early 2013

Media_httpimggawkeras_agbhz

The Verge is reporting that Microsoft Office is finally coming out for Android and iOS early next year. Like, for real this time. Apparently, it's coming to iOS first in February or March, and will be available for Android soon thereafter in May.

The Office software will reportedly require a Microsoft account, and will launch with the ability to view documents. The ability to edit them is activated if you have an Office 365 account, which you can buy in-app. There aren't any details about specific functionality that will or won't be in the apps, but the report makes it pretty clear that you'll still, obviously, need the full desktop versions.

21 Tips to Organize Your Office and Get More Done

Media_httpassetslifeh_glniw

You may think that you don’t have time to organize your office, but if you really knew how much time that disorganization cost you, you’d reconsider. Rearranging and moving piles occasionally doesn’t count. Neither does clearing off your desk, if you swipe the mess into a bin, or a desk drawer. A relatively neat and orderly office space clears the way for higher productivity and less wasted time.

Organizing your office doesn’t have to take days, it can be done a little at a time. In fact maintaining an organized office is much more effective if you treat it like an ongoing project, instead of a massive assault. So, if you’re ready to get started, the following tips will help you transform your office into an efficient workspace.
