I’m always trying to keep on top of the latest career trends and recently read through the mother lode: The 2012 white paperpublished by the Career Thought Leaders Consortium. It’s full of useful tips, strategies and ideas for job seekers and I want to share my favorites with you.

The report summarizes the key findings of the consortium’s annual Global Career Brainstorming Day, an international, multicity event that brings together nearly 100 career professionals — including coaches, resumé writers and college career services professionals — from the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. “What’s consistent every year is the very fast pace of change,” says Louise Kursmark, co-director of consortium and one of the co-editors of the report.

Hiring New Grads? Don’t Make These 3 Mistakes

Media_httprack0mshcdn_bmvia

If you’re hiring in the coming months, you very likely have at least one eye on the newest crop of potential future employees: soon-to-be-graduating college seniors.

New grads can be a great resource for companies of any size—they’re full of energy and new ideas and willing to get their hands dirty in their first real-world job.

But as you’re thinking about recruiting new grads this spring, take a peek at what things look like from the other side of the table.

College recruiting has some interesting—and sometimes unfortunate—parallels to dating in middle school. Students are “flirting” for the first time, and recruiters are all too often making the big mistakes their parents told them to avoid during early courtship.

Here's What the Future of Employment Looks Like

Media_httpwwwinccomup_sgdef

“I don’t think the companies we will have in 10 years will be structured in a way that will even allow your eye to draw analogies with the companies we have today,” Philip Rosedale, founder of SecondLife and Coffee and Power, recently said in an interview with Peter Diamandis.

So what exactly does he think this new employment landscape will look like? In the lengthy post, Rosedale outlined a seven key features, but here are the highlights:

Turnover will go through the roof. The trend of employees rapidly cycling through companies (currently, on average, a young person changes jobs every 18 months) will dramatically increase, redefining the way we work.

"People won't necessarily think of themselves as being employed by a single company. They won't necessarily work at one company for 10 years; they might work at it for 10 months or even 10 days,” Rosedale told Diamandis. “The companies of the future will be these aggregations of people who work together not necessarily because they're working for one person or on one project, but because they're somehow useful to each other at a high level."

Want To Work At Facebook? Here's The Skill They REALLY Want

Media_httpstatic1busi_mfebz

Facebook has 41 job openings on its data and analytics team. That's a large chunk of its 240-some tech positions to fill.

If you toss your resume into the bucket and get called for an interview, know this: The skill your potential future boss really wants is "understanding people," explained Ken Rudin, head of analytics at Facebook.

So he said last night at "Big Data Date Night," a one-evening event held in Mountain View, Calif.

"We're looking for people who are interested in understanding human nature and social behavior and who find it really appealing to be able to work with the largest data set ever amassed of a slice of human life on a daily basis," he said. "So the people who make good analysts are the ones who are really passionate about understanding people."
