How to Configure Your Freelancer Facebook Page

Media_httpfreelancesw_xtovg

Facebook Pages, in Facebook’s own words, “give a voice to any brand, business or organization to join the conversation with Facebook users.” To engage on Facebook as a brand, business or freelancer, you need a Page. As Facebook puts it, “Everything you do on Facebook starts with your Page”.

In a Freelance Switch screencast I showed you how to create your Facebook Page, which covers basic facebook page setup.

Once you’ve created your page, you’re ready to configure it. That means getting a profile picture, a cover, and a vanity URL. It also means filling out your about page, and tweaking your Page settings.

You can do most of this in your page settings, which you access by clicking “Update Info” in the Edit Page menu.

How to Improve Your Facebook Cover Photo

Your Facebook cover photo is the very first thing customers—and potential customers—see. A study released earlier this year by EyeTrackShop found that the images are the main attraction, with 100 percent of those surveyed looking at them. (Somewhere between 65 percent and 92 percent viewed the profile photos on the old brand pages.)

So what can you do to make your cover image work for you?

First, of course, there is the question of what photo to use. The EyeTrackShop study found that cover images with faces attracted more attention than those without. Wendy Tan-White, chief executive of Moonfruit, which builds e-commerce websites, suggests featuring an image that relates not only to your product or service but also to your customers. Got What It Cakes, a Charlotte, N.C.-based small business, features its owner, Mandie Miller, sitting at home with three striking cakes in its photo. Baby photos are visible on the wall behind her. Many of Miller’s customers are mothers.

Talk_about_Privacy3.jpg

Gawker started a row against Facebook last month by pointing out some of the moderators it outsources work to in Morocco, India and other countries are paid $1 per day.

As Forbes points out, Gawker initially made a non-story into a story: while $1 per day is not great, it does amount to the standard minimum wage in the countries where Facebook is sending work. "One of the problems is that many people don't quite understand how poor many parts of the world are," Tim Worstall wrote for the magazine.
