Here's What the Future of Employment Looks Like

Media_httpwwwinccomup_sgdef

“I don’t think the companies we will have in 10 years will be structured in a way that will even allow your eye to draw analogies with the companies we have today,” Philip Rosedale, founder of SecondLife and Coffee and Power, recently said in an interview with Peter Diamandis.

So what exactly does he think this new employment landscape will look like? In the lengthy post, Rosedale outlined a seven key features, but here are the highlights:

Turnover will go through the roof. The trend of employees rapidly cycling through companies (currently, on average, a young person changes jobs every 18 months) will dramatically increase, redefining the way we work.

"People won't necessarily think of themselves as being employed by a single company. They won't necessarily work at one company for 10 years; they might work at it for 10 months or even 10 days,” Rosedale told Diamandis. “The companies of the future will be these aggregations of people who work together not necessarily because they're working for one person or on one project, but because they're somehow useful to each other at a high level."

Want To Work At Facebook? Here's The Skill They REALLY Want

Media_httpstatic1busi_mfebz

Facebook has 41 job openings on its data and analytics team. That's a large chunk of its 240-some tech positions to fill.

If you toss your resume into the bucket and get called for an interview, know this: The skill your potential future boss really wants is "understanding people," explained Ken Rudin, head of analytics at Facebook.

So he said last night at "Big Data Date Night," a one-evening event held in Mountain View, Calif.

"We're looking for people who are interested in understanding human nature and social behavior and who find it really appealing to be able to work with the largest data set ever amassed of a slice of human life on a daily basis," he said. "So the people who make good analysts are the ones who are really passionate about understanding people."

Steve Wozniak on the evolution of computer technology

Media_httpcdntechicom_steas

The co-founder of Apple squeezes a ton of opinions and information into a video that’s less than 5-minutes long, but that doesn’t mean it’s light on data. In this string of consciousness talk that he gave for UCTV, he makes some points and humorous quips, but he mentions on thing that was very profound.

With the development of natural language recognition and faster internet and server technology, our phones are essentially becoming “human” in many ways. It has the sense of touch in the form of the touchscreens. It has the sense of the inner ear to be aware of its position within space. With GPS, it knows exactly where it is even if most people do not once they leave their familiar settings. It has an ear. It has an eye. I needs a sense of smell to be part of the human world.

Eric Schmidt and Stephen Colbert Discuss Politics and Google Play

Stephen Colbert stopped off at Google’s New York office recently to chat with Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt, and to promote his new book “America Again: Re-becoming the Greatness We Never Weren’t.”

The interview took place a while back, apparently, but the uncut version was just posted to YouTube on Friday. Schmidt, who was dressed in a shimmery baby-blue tie and gray suit jacket, lobbed some pretty easy ones at the fleece-wearing Colbert.

One highlight of the hour-long video came eight minutes in, when Schmidt told Colbert that his book was available on Google Play. “What does that mean?” Colbert asked. “It’s like the one [online store] that’s named after a rain forest?”

Interview: 3d Artist, J.R. Schmidt

Media_httpinspiredolo_tvtas

I started drawing when I was a kid – robots and castles mostly. I also had a thing for architectural floor plans – I would draw them all the time, even though I didn’t know what I was doing. Kind of weird now that I think of it. At first I continued to focus mostly on traditional art – drawing, painting, a little sculpture, etc. I kept doing that all through highschool but along the way I became interested in 3d software. I wouldsay my interest in video games heavily influenced my desire to pursue 3d graphics, and continues to influence my work today. After I graduated highschool I was planning on majoring in film and animation, but I decided to switch to something I had never heard of – New Media Design. It ended up being one of the best decisions of my career because I was exposed to a huge variety of technologies in addition to film and animation: web-design, illustration, interactive design, scripting, object-oriented programming, programmatic art, and on and on. I enjoyed all of it and for a while I was unsure which path I wanted to take after graduation. I settled on animation, but I continue to do all the other stuff to some extent. I started experimenting with polygonal art a couple years ago in college. I was working on a project with a few other students and we were making 3d assets that were going to be used in a Flash app. In other words they had to be extremely low poly in order for the thing to run smoothly. Rather than let the ,software constraints cripple us, we let it inform our design decisions the whole. The polygonal stuff arose from that mentality. I probably saw similar work elsewhere along the way, so I guess I was just keeping it in the back of my mind.
