Famous Quotes are Paired with Clever Illustrations

Media_httpapiningcom8_eijef

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia-based illustrator Tang Yau Hoong has just released a brand new series where he pairs one of his older illustrations with a famous quote. A few years ago, we discovered Hoong and we quickly became fans after we saw his ability to cleverly incorporate negative space into many of his works. As he told us then, "I enjoy making illusion art because it has the ability to mislead us. We rely on sight in our lives and yet it is so fragile that we could easily be deceived by what we see."

In one of our favorite new prints, Hoong takes one of Steve Jobs' famous quotes, "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" and illustrates it by putting two half eaten apples next to each other. Within the negative space, one can subtly make out Steve Jobs' silhouette.

Grunge Minimalist Posters Illustrating Famous Movie Quotes

Media_httpwwwdesignyo_bpshf

Making posters related to famous movies is somehow popular these days among designers. There are a lot of them doing it and they are each creating the posters in a certain style. For example, Jay Quann created this series of posters which illustrate famous movie quotes and a significant minimalist image which is relevant for the quote or the movie itself.

This is an interesting concept and there are a few posters that people might like hanging in their office or, why not, at home. For the time being, these are the only posters available, but we are surely hoping that he makes a few more because there are so many movies that people can relate to and so many really good lines that are famous.

If Superheroes Were Sponsored By Famous Brands

Media_httpimggawkeras_zunjg

How do superheroes afford being, well, superheroes? It doesn't seem too lucrative a gig given the time commitment and hazardous work conditions but yet every hero still seems to make ends meet. But if superheroes are struggling financially, they should totally look into sponsoring themselves. Iron Man by McDonald's. Monster Hulk. Captain America's What Can Brown Do For You? This is how sponsored superheroes would look like.

Meet the Man Who Invented Video Games

Media_httpimggawkeras_xbvbj

Before Angry Birds, Call of Duty, and Halo, there was Pong. And before that there was Tennis (cartridge 3) for the Magnavox Odyssey. And that machine was Ralph Baer's baby. An inventor by trade, Baer developed the first working prototype, "the Brown Box," in 1968, and just four years later, the Odyssey burst onto store shelves, jump-starting console gaming as we know it.

What Famous Logos Will Look Like In 50 Years

Media_httpstatic3busi_wevdd

From top universities to major retailers, most big-name organizations go through major shifts in their identities and, more noticeably, their logos.

Recent trends include shortening words to letters (like JCP, nee JCPenney), making the font lowercase (like arby's), or dropping the name altogether (like Starbucks). But what does the future hold?

Stock Logos, an online identity design community, drew up what the world's most famous logo's will look like in the next 10, 50, and 100 years.

The awesome part is, the timelines include a breakdown of how the logos have morphed since the company's inception.

15 People Made Famous by the Internet in 2012

Media_http8mshcdncomw_jdcju

The Internet has been creating celebrity for years — from Justin Bieber to the “I Like Turtles” kid. But more people than ever flocked to online communities in 2012, and the opportunity for fame increased exponentially.

Some of this year’s discovery was pushed by the media, but much of it originated on the web. Platforms like Reddit played an important role in filtering unique moments that would have otherwise gone unnoticed — the social web pulled Ridiculously Photogenic Guy from a South Carolina 10K race.

But not everything is pure entertainment. The year 2012 familiarized us with a rich viral philanthropy movement. After a bus monitor on a $15,000 yearly salary was bullied by middle schoolers, the Internet rapidly came to her defense, donating more than half a million dollars toward her dream vacation.

Being discovered online is not always necessarily in one’s favor. This year, millions of people learned about worldwide campaigns, like the one against LRA leader Joseph Kony. More subtle figures like Reddit moderator Violentacrez unexpectedly went from anonymous identity to the subject of a global debate.

In no particular order, here are 15 people who famously caught the Internet’s attention in 2012. Who do you think comes in on top? Let us know in the comments below.

21 Famous Authors Write 140-Character Novels

Media_httpassetsflavo_agbjl

We’ve all been lectured about the simplistic perfection of Ernest Hemingway’s six-word short story (“For sale: baby shoes, never worn.”), but would it be possible to write a bite-sized novel the same way? This week, The Guardian asked 21 authors to try their hands at “Twitter fiction” — an entire “novel” in 140 characters. The results are mixed, though there are some great stories in the bunch – Geoff Dyer writes, “I know I said that if I lived to 100 I’d not regret what happened last night. But I woke up this morning and a century had passed. Sorry.” And Helen Fielding’s tale is exactly what we’d expect from her: “OK. Should not have logged on to your email but suggest if going on marriedaffair.com don’t use our children’s names as password.” What do you think, dear readers? Is this a form worth exploring? Let us know your feelings (or your own 140-character tales) in the comments, and be sure to head over to The Guardian to take in the entire list.

What Happens When You Add Color to Iconic Black and White Photos?

It's a little disorienting, to say the least. The best way I can describe the addition of color to famous black and white photos is that it looks more like a frame from a movie scene, than snapshot of real life. A little unreal.

It's obviously not as hilarious as uncropped iconic photos but adding color kind of removes the picture from its time in history. Do they look better? Possibly. But are the pictures as powerful? I don't think so.
