Should A Logo Be Timeless? - Infographic

Media_httpthelogocomp_ednac

We often get asked for a logo design that can stand the test of time. Something that will last forever. I mean, we look at all these “Mega Corporates” and their logos never change. Do they? Well, actually and surprisingly, they do….a lot.

This illustration depicts some of the biggest global brands and highlights the evolution of their logos from humble beginnings to the present day. It might strike you how some of the designs started out looking like their biggest rivals and others appear to of hardly changed at all. Timeless is certainly not the overriding characteristic of most of these early creations.

Netflix Moves To Samsung ARM-Based Chromebooks, Thanks To Premium Video Extensions In HTML5

Media_httptctechcrunc_ghdca

Thanks to the availability of a couple of premium video extensions that it’s been helping to develop along with other Worldwide Web Consortium (W3C) members, Netflix today is announcing support for HTML5 playback on Samsung ARM-based Chromebooks. According to an entry on the Netflix Tech Blog, the development of Media Source Extensions (MSE), Encrypted Media Extensions (EME), and Web Cryptography API (WebCrypto) will soon allow it to support HTML5 playback on a whole host of modern browsers without the need for a third-party browser extension.

While a large number of web publishers have begun to move toward HTML5-based playback over the last few years, Netflix hasn’t been one of them. It’s required users to download the Microsoft Silverlight plugin for browser-based viewing for the last several years. But with Silverlight slowly making its way out, and technologies around HTML5 getting better, the streaming video company is beginning to test out new ways to make its movies and TV shows available without a plug-in.

Windows Live Messenger Will Be “Upgraded” To Skype Starting On April 8

Media_httptctechcrunc_yidds

Good news for those of you still clinging to Windows Live Messenger in its current form — it looks like you’ll able to keep using it for just a little bit longer. It’s no secret that Microsoft would retire its 13 year old messaging service in favor of the one it paid $8.5 billion for, but Skype announced in a post on its blog that the timeline for the official transition process has been pushed back by a hair.

Microsoft announced to some users of the Live Messenger service last month that it would make its transition to Skype on March 15, but The Verge’s Tom Warren reports that only a “small number” of people will actually make the move on that date. A bigger test group was supposed to transition on the 15th, but apparently early tests were promising enough that the size of the first group was scaled down.

Google Declares War on the Password

Media_httpwwwwiredcom_gdabi

This may be closer than you think. Google’s security team outlines this sort of ring-finger authentication in a new research paper, set to be published late this month in the engineering journal IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine. In it, Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and Engineer Mayank Upadhyay outline all sorts of ways they think people could wind up logging into websites in the future — and it’s about time.

2012 may have been the year that the password broke. It seemed like everyone on the internet received spam e-mail or desperate pleas for cash — the so-called “Mugged in London” scam — from the e-mail accounts of people who had been hacked. And Wired’s own Mat Honan showed everyone just how damaging a hack can be.

How to Evolve from Freelancer to Agency

Media_httpfreelancesw_vadwj

Most freelancers are ambitious. We have to be if we want to build up a solid client roster and bring home enough income to justify not getting a day job. But that’s not the end of the line — in the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t take a freelancer all that long to build up a full-time income. Then we have to ask ourselves what we want to do next. There’s not a clear career path that we can follow, like one might climb up the corporate ladder.

One of the options that appeals to many freelancers is building an agency, which can allow you to keep working on the types of projects you like in a much larger quantity. Running an agency isn’t exactly something to jump into without prep work, but if that’s the direction your freelance career is evolving into, it’s a surprisingly practical option.

Pivoting On Your Business Model

Media_httpfreelancesw_iefkt

Hmmm, pivoting on your business model. That sounds like the name of a new band. Does it have videos online? Where’s its ReverbNation page?

Before this fun-loving line of reasoning goes any further, let me bring you back down to reality. Pivoting on your business model is a hot topic in startup circles. It’s what you’re forced to do when your business runs into trouble.

Maybe the customers aren’t buying what you went into business to sell. Or the tastes of the public have changed. What you were offering five years ago just doesn’t have the same appeal. And the result is showing up on your financial statements – in red ink.

IE10 Is Incrementally Changing The Direction Of The Web

Media_httpreadwriteco_gaudj

Internet Explorer is slowly, slightly, but significantly changing the Web.

Tuesday, Microsoft released a preview of IE10 running on Windows 7, as expected -- the same version that’s available for the new Windows 8, but translated into the older Windows 7. At the same time, executives with Microsoft’s IE team made the case that content providers have begun incorporating IE10-specific features into their sites, which would benefit those surfing on Microsoft’s latest OS, Windows 8, which has IE10 built in.

The move may be a response to Google’s Chrome, whose download page tells people to “get their Google back.” Google released both Google search apps and Chrome for Windows 8 last month, as well as a Windows RT-specific search app on Monday afternoon.

But with just the tiniest change to the functionality of Etsy.com, Pulse.me, and MSN, Microsoft is signaling that IE 10 might be taking a small step toward a more useful, and Microsoft-centric, Web.

How Microsoft’s operating system has evolved over time

Media_httpcdntechicom_keefc

Have you ever wondered about the history of computers? ENIAC (Electrical Numerical Integrator and Calculator) might’ve been the first computer, but it was not the first computer with the mouse and keyboard that we’re accustomed to. The question is when (and how) did it start? Back in 1984 when Apple launched the Macintosh, the need for competition emerged, and at that time Microsoft engraved its name in history by introducing ‘Windows’. This gave rise to one of the most infamous rivalries in history — Apple vs. Microsoft. Within a short time, Microsoft’s OS became a success — and not just an ordinary success; it gained a huge customer base and is still dominant throughout the IT world. So let’s go back in time and see how Windows made its way to your computer (unless you’re a Mac or Linux user!).

How Facebook is evolving online shopping

Media_httpwwwthedigit_uyjoh

On the heels of the largest social network hitting the milestone of 1 billion users, Facebook is testing a new feature on their platform, the “Want” button – enabling consumers to create wish lists for products they desire.

This is part of a test of “Collections” functionality exploring Want, Collect and Like buttons to see what works best for consumers sharing what they want and like from a brand.

This new feature leads brands down a new avenue, evolving e-commerce on Facebook. I think this will change the way consumers interact with a brand and drive revenue for brands. People can easily share things they are interested in with their friends, then Facebook friends can click through and buy the items right off of Facebook.

“The Innocence of Muslims,” a trailer for an anti-Islamic film that has served as both an excuse and a spur for the latest round of unrest in the Middle East, is only the latest example of a longstanding YouTube tradition. The Google-owned company has been redefining activism, for better or for worse, since its inception. Here are 15 similarly Earth-shaking videos.

There's no denying the twin impacts of YouTube as a global video distribution network and the cellphone camera as a tool of citizen journalism. If a picture is worth a thousand words, a video is worth a million.

Are Social Networks Changing The Way We Think About Ourselves? - Infographic

Are we all social networking narcissists? According to a recent infographic released by PsychologyDegree.net, social networking has not only taken over our time but also changed how we think about ourselves.

Users are amassing more than 1.2 million updates and spending one in five minutes of online time on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook each day. Every 24 hours more than 250 million photos are shared by users to an average of 245 friends, and meanwhile 90 percent of Americans think other people are sharing too much information about themselves.
