5 Socially Unacceptable Things You're Going To Do With Google Glass

The nerds are so excited. Our Internet-augmented, face-computer-wearing future is just over the horizon. Leading us there will be Google Glass, the first iteration of this particular sort of wearable, semi-immersive computing experience. If the product is successful, it will merely be the beginning.

The anticipation is understandable. If having Internet-connected computers in our pockets can transform our world, just imagine what wearing them on our faces will do. The prospect of everything from augmented reality games to futuristic surgery has people pumped for the days head. It's all very cool, but there's another side to Google Glass: the creepy factor.

For every exciting use case, it seems there's at least one social or policy-related concern. How will this impact privacy? Will we even have privacy in the future? When will we overcome the social stigma of face-mounted computers? Will we?

It will be some time before these questions shake out, a process that will continue as the technology evolves beyond Google's audacious first stab at it. In the meantime, here are five socially unacceptable things we expect some of Glass's earliest adopters to get into.

So What if Facebook is a Fad?

The NYT is just the latest to jump on the bandwagon of wondering whether Facebook's recent troubles spell an end to the share era. A couple recent surveys found Facebook user engagement was down (34 percent of users in one survey were spending less time on the site, which some labeled "boring" or "not relevant") and a sizeable number of Americans (46 percent) in another survey thought the company would fade away. And, you know, the stock isn't doing so hot.

Is modern technology creating a culture of distraction?

Are all the modern devices and digital conveniences we have at our disposal — from the web and social media to smartphones and tablets — making us more distracted and less able to concentrate? And is this harming our ability to think and be creative, and therefore by extension harming society as a whole? It’s a question that rears its head from time to time. How the internet changed society

Social networking, file sharing, and open source software production are all a result of the internet. The width and depth of global communication has never been larger or as easy to achieve. But how has the internet really changed society? Has it at all? There are many who would argue that internet merely gave society a new way to express behavior that has been present from the beginning. It is not the order of society that the internet has changed, merely the mode.

At its simplest, society is founded on communicating knowledge. That is why language and writing were invented. The internet is just a faster way of exchanging that knowledge. Like cars were faster than horses and the telegraph faster than letters, the internet is just a step up on the road to instant communication of thoughts, ideas, and information.
