This Is The Office Of The Future

Media_httpstatic1busi_rcevy

The office of the future is going to look a lot different than it does today.

PSFK Labs, a trends and workplace consultancy with clients including Apple, BMW and Nike, just published a new report, The Future Of The Workplace, that predicts how this will look.

In short, offices will be very mobile with high information flow from the top down. And they'll also look a lot different, with sound-proof pods instead of cubicles, and TED-inspired meeting spaces.

We caught up with Piers Fawkes, president and founder of PSFK briefly about the report, which includes 1,200 data points from experts, creative agencies and other sources. "I’m really interested in the idea of talent on demand," he tells us. "Staffing in a company needs to be flexible and the office needs to be adaptive. Using algorithms to efficiently manage staff within the organization is all about efficiency and productivity."

The State of Social Media

The speed at which social media, as an industry, changes only brings to mind one term for me: break neck pace.

I live and breathe this industry and even I have trouble keeping up. We all see it every day as new platforms and tools and best practices are constantly evolving.

Luckily, there is also quite a bit of data and research available to help us get a grip on these changes.

Software We Use But Hate

Media_httpwww9pcmagco_kbjct

Many of us spend a large chunk of our day on the computer. So, when you add up all that time—at home, at school, at work, and on commutes—it's not surprising that we occasionally get frustrated with something on our laptops or desktops. No system is perfect (no, not even a Mac), nor is any peripheral or gadget. And don't get us started on apps and OSes. Actually, let's do sound off.

There are computer-related annoyances that we deal with daily, and most of them have to do with software. Perhaps it's a constantly-crashing Chrome that makes a simple Google search take five times as long. Or maybe it's the sluggishness of iTunes and its annoying sync issues. These are problems we simply put up with because there's not really a better alternative.

Media_http2imagesthew_cgcia

La Villa Hamster in Nantes, France, offers guests the ultimate hamster experience: Beds of organic hay, edible grains, and a huge, human-sized hamster wheel. The hotel says it is filling the "animal transformation" niche in the hotel industry that has curiously gone unfilled for so many years. The history of supercomputers - Slideshow

Media_httpwwwextremet_wpver

Have you ever wondered why a supercomputer is called a supercomputer? Is it the number of processors or the amount of RAM? Must a supercomputer occupy a certain amount of space, or consume a specific amount of power?

The first supercomputer, the Control Data Corporation (CDC) 6600, only had a single CPU. Released in 1964, the CDC 6600 was actually fairly small — about the size of four filing cabinets. It cost $8 million — around $60 million in today’s money — and operated at up to 40MHz, squeezing out a peak performance of 3 million floating point operations per second (flops).

Android Ice Cream Sandwich: Hands-on tour - Slideshow

Media_httpwwwextremet_hrqbj

While the Galaxy Nexus and Ice Cream Sandwich are not landing until the middle of November, the Android 4.0 SDK is now available. The SDK is vital for developers who want to check if their apps still work in ICS, and also for the intrepid bunker-dwelling adventurers of ExtremeTech who wasted little time in downloading and installing the SDK to poke around all of Android 4.0′s new features. Even though many of us stayed up to watch the announcement and demonstrations, it’s just not the same as playing with the operating system yourself.
