Trekkie Built Starship Enterprise Star Trek Apartment

Media_httpcdninthrall_vzgmi

Star Trek Mega Fan and UK resident, Tony Alleyne is likely one of the only people to have the self proclaimed title of “24th Century Interior Designer,” but his title ring true when you see what he did with his previous home.

Admittedly a trekkie at his core, in the late 90s Alleyne proceeded to convert his home into an exact replica of the Transporter Control Console. From the looks of it, he succeeded– even though it’s likely that these interior spaces would be more fit for a robot of some sort. The kitchen is a tiny space that glows and appears to be hardly ADA compliant– but an interesting space nevertheless. His design motto is “bliss is living without wires” and that’s certainly the case with his sci-fi space.

Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness Trailers From Last Night's Super Bowl

Media_httpimggawkeras_lhbhc

If you hate football but love cinema: no problem! Here are the trailers for Iron Man 3 and Star Trek Into Darkness which aired during last night's game—without any sports involved.

The Iron Man 3 trailer (above) mixes a reasonable amount of previously seen footage with some new—the highlight being a scene where Stark plucks falling passengers out of the sky following some sort of airplane disaster. It still looks amazing.

Elsewhere, the Star Trek trailer (below) gives absolutely nothing away, but is dramatic and full of Benedict Cumberbatch. So... what's not to love? Kick back for a couple of minutes and whet your appetite for films to come.

NASA Starts Work on Real Life Star Trek Warp Drive

Media_httpimggawkeras_cngzg

"Perhaps a Star Trek experience within our lifetime is not such a remote possibility." These are the words of Dr. Harold "Sonny" White, the Advanced Propulsion Theme Lead for the NASA Engineering Directorate. Dr. White and his colleagues don't just believe a real life warp drive is theoretically possible; they've already started the work to create one.

Yes. A real warp drive, Scotty.

The science of Star Trek [infographic]

Media_httpigbestcompu_xgbrj

Wormholes. Warp engines. Transporters. Replicators. Certainly, much of the universe as imagined by "Star Trek" creator Gene Rodenberry is truly science fiction. But how much of it is reality -- or could ever be reality?

The ambitious plan to build Star Trek's USS Enterprise

Media_http2imagesthew_eshan

If Elon Musk's space exploration company SpaceX is any indication, the future of space travel is in the hands of people with big imaginations. And nobody's vision is quite as ambitious as one engineer who has outlined an elaborate plan to build Star Trek's USS Enterprise, which he says could be ready to fly within the next 20 years. "We have the technological reach to build the first generation of the spaceship... so let's do it," writes BTE Dan on his website, BuildTheEnterprise.org (which has been loading intermittently because of heavy traffic). The website includes conceptual blueprints, budgeting proposals, a timeline for research and development, and almost every other conceivable detail, raising the question: Could BTE Dan actually pull this crazy thing off? Here's what you should know about the engineer's sprawling vision...

Star Trek-like device beams life-sized holograms

Media_httpbetaimagest_aacoi

Online video conferencing tools such as Skype have revolutionized the way job interviews are conducted from afar. But what if technology enabled you to appear in an office, in front of a prospective employer, even when you’re half a world away?

A Queen’s University researcher has created a device that transmits life-sized 3-D holograms, allowing people in different locations to video conference while virtually standing in front of each other. “Why Skype when you can talk to a life-sized 3-D holographic image of another person?” said professor Roel Vertegaal, director of the Human Media Lab at Queen’s.

Star Trek Holodecks Are Here, Sort Of

Media_httpblogsdiscov_ihche

The Holodeck on Star Trek produces a completely immersive environment, complete with solid objects and changing landscapes. We’re not there yet, but a couple of companies in Britain have made a stab at building something like it using a bunch of relatively simple projectors, Sony Move controllers, and some creative visual tricks.
