Modern society is massively complex. We like to pretend that our mastery of tools and technology has made life easier or better, but in actuality it has never been harder to simply live life.

Above all else, tools and technology give us choices, and more choice means more complexity. 10,000 years ago, life basically consisted of hunting, eating, and procreating. Stone arrowheads were the state of the art, tool-wise. Over time, new materials were mastered and new tools devised (iron, paper, plastics, computer chips) — and society grew increasingly complex (trade, diplomacy, religion, global media).

Technology may not be the most personal of gifts, but it's got two things going for it as a holiday offering:

1. Typically this is the time of year when tech prices are cut

2. Tech gifts usually last for a while.

But how do you know what tech gizmo or service people want? Tthat's the real question, isn't it?

Start with this rule of thumb: Don't buy someone a smartphone or computer unless you know exactly what they want. Purchasing such items as a surprise gift - unless it's for a young child - usually doesn't work out very well, since the odds are you won't be able to figure what will really make them happy.

All is not lost, though. There's plenty of tech out there that makes a great gift for that special someone. I'll start with some cool stuff that I'm either buying or coveting. (If they don't work for you in terms of price or availability, hopefully they'll spark ideas for similar items.) They're Here. They're Geeks. Get Used To It

Thanks to ubiquitous consumer electronics and the prominence of technology executives like Facebook Inc's Mark Zuckerberg and the late Steve Jobs of Apple Inc, it's no longer an insult to be called a geek.

The geek -- broadly speaking, the tech-obsessed, socially-awkward type who spends more time online than offline -- is more respected than ever, according to a survey by Modis, the technology staffing arm of Adecco SA, the world's biggest staffing company.

Most Americans -- 51 percent -- now consider geeks professionally successful, up from 31 percent a year ago, Modis' annual "Geek Pride" survey found. More people also consider geeks to be extremely intelligent: 54 percent say so, up from 45 percent last year.

The survey is Modis' way of marking Geek Pride Day, held each year on May 25th, the anniversary of the release of the first "Star Wars" movie in 1977.

Though the infographic generalizes each geektype to a fault, I'm pretty sure I know a person from each kind of geek. To be fair, we're all probably bits and pieces of geek in one, a little Gadget geek sprinkled with Star Wars knowledge or sports geek mixed with Apple fanboy geek or some geek with another geek.
