Creating commercials for the Superbowl is always tough. The need to stand out, make a splash and be remembered naturally conflicts with the high-stakes nature of the event.

This explains the yearly default to a short list of themes that always test well with consumers and clients alike: babies, animals, slapstick and iconic music, especially '70s classic rock.

The lineup for Superbowl XLVII was no different, but like every year, some brands found new and compelling ways to tell their stories and innovative ways to deliver them.

Raised turf with holes for people to fall into, pyrotechnics galore, a myriad of stunt personnel—and then literally months spent in the visual effects studio. Worth it in the end, though, because that scene genuinely made the movie. There'll be more where that came from when the DVD lands on December 3rd, and judging by that clip, it might actually be worth watching the special features for once.

Websites from Coca-Cola, Acura and film Act of Valor crashed Sunday night after being overwhelmed by Super Bowl ad-driven traffic. In Coke’s case, a Facebook app featuring animated polar bears in the ads buckled under the strain. On the other hand, Kia’s site had the most reliable, fastest performance of all Super Bowl advertisers Sunday night, according to Yottaa, a website optimization firm.

Is Los Angeles Getting an NFL Team?

The Raiders and the Rams both fled Los Angeles in 1995, and in the subsequent 16 years, Tinseltown has gone without a football team. But finally, this dark period in the city's history may be coming to an end. This week, the L.A. City Council unanimously approved the financial framework of a deal between the city and Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG) to build a $1.2 billion, 72,000-seat football stadium in downtown Los Angeles near the Lakers' Staples Center. The proposed Farmers Field is still 10 months away from being a sure thing — an environmental impact report still needs to be completed — but construction could begin as soon as June 2012, with the stadium opening in September 2016. There's one other catch: The construction project can't begin in earnest until an existing NFL team agrees to move to L.A. So if the city signs up a team, it may not have to wait for the stadium to be built — football could be coming to a temporary home like the Rose Bowl or Coliseum as soon as next season. Is it time for pigskin lovers in the City of Angels to celebrate?
