Apple Profits Fall And Growth Slows. Welcome To The New Normal

Media_httpreadwriteco_obfge

Apple reported its first profit decline in over a decade and bluntly admitted that its growth is slowing. It was, indeed, a strange but not wholly unexpected change of pace for the wildly successful Cupertino company.

Despite that bad news, the stock market barely hiccupped. As of writing, Apple shares were virtually unchanged in after-hours trading from their close of $406.13 — a level roughly 42% below their peak just seven months ago. Which means that these diminished expectations are, for now, Apple's new normal.

Google beats analyst expectations by $2 billion last quarter. Yes, $2 billion.

Media_httpcdntechicom_qgfye

It isn’t too common for Wall Street analysts to be very wrong. They have good indicators and past performances upon which to generate their predictions and it’s often more accurate than the weather. With Google’s Q4 2012 analysis, they were wrong by a mile even at Google’s revenue standards.

They reported $14.42 billion in the last quarter and earnings per share of $10.65 on a non-GAAP basis. Analyst had expected that Google would have revenues of $12.3 billion.

“We ended 2012 with a strong quarter,” said Larry Page, CEO of Google. “Revenues were up 36% year-on-year, and 8% quarter-on-quarter. And we hit $50 billion in revenues for the first time last year – not a bad achievement in just a decade and a half. In today’s multi-screen world we face tremendous opportunities as a technology company focused on user benefit. It’s an incredibly exciting time to be at Google.”

In Case You Had Any Doubts About Where Apple's Profit Comes From...

Media_httpstatic2busi_xajti

Last month, I noted that the 5-year-old iPhone is already the most profitable product in the world.

The iPhone, I estimated, is so profitable that it generates more profit than just about any other company on earth, not just product.

The iPhone generates more profit than GE, for example (all of GE). It generates more profit than Microsoft. It generates more profit than Google and Walmart. It generates almost as much profit as Exxon-Mobil!

Media_httpbetaimagest_wcgdv

Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s top technology firm by revenue, reported a record quarterly profit of $5.9-billion (U.S.) on Friday, as rampant sales of its smartphones more than offset a tumble in memory chip prices.

The South Korean firm reported April-June operating profit of 6.72-trillion Korean won ($5.86-billion U.S.), in line with its earlier estimate of 6.7-trillion won and up 79 per cent from a year ago.

Facebook’s delicate balance between profits and privacy

Media_httpgigaom2file_hghas

In less than a week, the financial world is going to witness Facebook drive one of the biggest initial public offerings in history. It will make its investors stinking rich and have techies espousing the transformative power of the web and social media. But Facebook’s IPO already has skeptics calling the into question the company’s incredible valuation. Some are even wondering if it’s the start of a new bubble.

If that forecast turns out to be true — if Facebook (and the social ecosystem that grew up around it) crashes and burns like MySpace and so many dot.coms before it — privacy might play a major role in its demise. Investors want to see ad revenue grow, but users might bail in a hurry if Facebook crosses the line of how it’s acceptable to treat their very-personal data.

Apple And Samsung Captured 99% Of Phone Industry's Profits

Media_httpstatic5busi_tjhic

The iPhone may account for less than 10% of the total cell phone market, but even with that small market share, Apple is dominating the industry's profits and revenue.

Apple's share of the phone industry's revenues climbed to more than 40% in the first quarter of this year, a record high for the company, according to data from Horace Dediu at Asymco.

Even more impressive, Apple now accounts for nearly three quarters (73%) of the phone industry's total profits. Samsung captured 26% of the industry's profits and HTC took the remaining 1%, says Dediu.

Bottom line: If your name isn't Apple or Samsung, you're getting clobbered in the smartphone market.

Below you can see Apple's share of the market's revenues and profits.

Profiting From Your Competitor’s Mistakes

Media_httpwwwopenforu_yfuyj

Capitalizing on a competitor’s mistakes can seem a bit awkward for many small business owners. Some feel badly profiting from someone else’s misery but in reality there is no reason to feel this way. Our economy grows stronger as companies that make the right decisions expand while those that tend to make poor decisions grow weaker and shrink until they close. Resources need to flow to those companies that can best put them to productive use. We are all hurt by having zombie companies consume resources without offering any clear benefit to anyone.

Amazon lowers profit outlook for holiday quarter

Media_httpbetaimagest_vhfbh

Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN-Q227.15-10.46-4.40%) shocked investors with a far weaker-than-expected outlook for the crucial holiday season quarter as it spent heavily on its new Kindle Fire tablet computer.

The stock tumbled 12 per cent Tuesday in extended trading as the news raised concern that Amazon was losing some of the revenue momentum that had helped investors overlook its razor-thin profit margins.
