Chromebook Pixel: Google's Retina, Touchscreen, MacBook Pro Counterpunch

Media_httpimggawkeras_aujxy

Until now, Chromebooks hadn't been much more than glorified netbooks; underpowered curios best suited for technological novices. The 13-inch, touchscreen, retina-displayed, full-powered Chromebook Pixel, though, appears to be anything but. And it should be enough to make Apple at least a little nervous. At least until you get to the price.

The anodized aluminum Pixel is purpose-built for working in the cloud. Rather than the standard 16:9 resolution, the Pixel is optimized for viewing Internet-based content with a 2560x1700 resolution on a 3:2 aspect ratio—which provides 18 percent more vertical space than the conventional 16:9 layout. That's 4.3 million pixels total, 239 per inch—appreciably more than the 13-inch retina MacBook Pro's 227 ppi. What's more, the display is Gorilla Glass and doubles as a capacitive touch screen.

HP Makes A Chromebook: What Does It Mean?

Media_httpreadwriteco_jgjjf

When the world's largest PC manufacturer starts making Chromebooks, what does it mean? Does it reveal a degree of uncertainty about the direction of the PC? A response to the perceived complexity of Windows 8 machines? An underserved market it can exploit?

Why not all of the above?

Early Monday morning, Hewlett-Packard announced the Pavilion 14 Chromebook, a $329.99 netbook boasting both a larger screen - 14 inches - than rival Chromebooks, as well as a new pricing tier. HP's Pavilion 14 brings the total Chromebook count to four: the $229 Samsung Chromebook, the $199 Acer C7, the $449 Samsung Chromebook 550, and the Pavilion 14. HP's screen may be the largest of the bunch, but its processor - a dual-core Intel Celeron - sits below the Chromebook's 550's Intel Core processor.

Chromebooks are an overlooked part of Google's arsenal, but they really shouldn't be. If you don't need specific programs, and just need a computer to work on docs on and browse the web, Chromebooks are pretty much the best inexpensive laptops you can get.

Media_httpwww8pcmagco_eqgjj

If you're not looking for a laptop for heavy gaming or video production, you're probably just looking for one that can accommodate a variety of basic user needs. A dedicated graphics chip or an SSD would be nice additions, but you'd rather have the extra cash.

You can't skimp on the basics, though. Does the laptop have a solid processor? Will you have enough RAM for busy workdays or a big enough hard drive for your music, and maybe a couple of movies? These laptops have it covered.

A laptop battery that lasts for 32 hours

Media_httpibnetcomblo_jypsh

Batteries are perhaps the biggest limiting factor in creating amazing technological advancement. As superhero expert E. Paul Zehr said in this recent interview with Smart Planet: The power source is the biggest challenge in using robotics of the sort worn by Iron Man, “Maybe something innovative will come out of all the work done with electric cars, although you wouldn’t want to lug a 200-pound battery around. So we could very well have a suit that we could control…but if you still have to plug it into the wall? Forget it. That’s not going to work.”

Apple suppliers are currently shipping components for a super-thin 15-inch MacBook, reports DigiTimes.

This points to Apple working on either a 15-inch MacBook Air or a thinner-than-usual 15-inch MacBook Pro, though we think the Air is far more likely.
