The Evolution of English Language Over the Last 500 Years

Unsurprisingly, a lot's changed since the 1500s, not least of all language. But now a physicist has crunched through 5.2 million books published over five centuries in order to analyze the way the English language has changed over time.

There is, of course, one constant: by far and away the most popular word throughout history is the humble definite article "the". No surprise there, as it's an indispensable classic.

Dig around into short phrases, however, and things get more interesting. Back in 1520, the most popular three-word phrase was "of the Pope". Not so these days, because it's been superseded by the more useful, but rather more boring, string "one of the".

Facebook Has 500 Million Mobile Users

Facebook passed 500 million monthly active users on Friday, April 20, the company just announced in a filing with the SEC.

That number does not include Instagram's 35 million or so registered users, as that deal has not yet closed.

Facebook has only recently begun trying to make money off its many mobile users, promising advertises to increase exposure to their brand pages through ads in the News Feed and in mobile apps if necessary.

An electric car that can go from Boston to Detroit on a single charge could hit showroom floors sometime in the next decade, if all continues to go smoothly for IBM.

Yes, IBM. The company, best known these days for its trivia-champ computer Watson, is making a risky bet on the development of lithium-air battery technology in a bid to accelerate adoption of electric vehicles.

Instagram Has Only A Handful Of Employees, But May Soon Be Valued At $500 Million

Instagram, the popular photo sharing app for iPhone, is about to raise $40 million at a jaw-dropping valuation -- perhaps as much as $500 million.

That's for a company that at last count had only 9 employees and hasn't really started trying to make money yet.

The news was reported today in the Wall Street Journal. Last week, Bloomberg reporter Jon Erlichman tweeted that the company was about to raise a new round that would "make you go wow."

Report: Apple concludes Anobit acquisition for $500 million

Reuters reports Apple is buying Israeli flash technology maker Anobit for $500 million...and opening an R&D center in Israel.

Following reports earlier this week that ever-secretive Apple was in talks to buy Israeli flash technology firm Anobit, Reuters is reporting that Apple has concluded the deal for a total of $500 million. But that’s not all: Reuters also has Apple planning to open a new research and development facility in Israel—the first time the company would have taken its development work outside the United States.
