After Its Worst Quarter In 8 Years, IBM Might Sell Its Server Business

Media_httpstatic1busi_vnbfd

On the same day that IBM posted one of its worst quarters in eight years — at least according to this analyst — word leaked that it might be trying to sell its x86 server business to China's Lenovo Group.

The news first broke yesterday by Kevin McLaughlin at CRN and today CRN's Joseph Kovar vaguely confirmed that Lenovo was in "preliminary talks," with somebody, though Lenovo wouldn't say it was IBM...

Guess What? IBM's A Software Company Now!

Media_httpstatic1busi_ykgog

In case you haven't been paying attention, IBM's stock has been on a tear of late, more than doubling off the 2009 low.
That may not sound particularly impressive--the market as a whole has doubled off the 2009 low--but IBM's stock didn't collapse the way the rest of the market did during the financial crisis. Also, the stocks of some of IBM's big competitors have fared far worse over this period.

Big 'Green'? IBM works on 500 miles-per-charge battery

An electric car that can go from Boston to Detroit on a single charge could hit showroom floors sometime in the next decade, if all continues to go smoothly for IBM.

Yes, IBM. The company, best known these days for its trivia-champ computer Watson, is making a risky bet on the development of lithium-air battery technology in a bid to accelerate adoption of electric vehicles.

Facebook Buys 750 IBM Patents To Defend Against Yahoo

Media_httptctechcrunc_gmcpm

Facebook has just bought some troll repellant in the form of 750 patents for networking, software, and other technologies from IBM according to Bloomberg. If Yahoo relies any of those technologies, Facebook could use the patents to counteract Yahoo’s patent infringement lawsuit against it.

The purchase means Facebook may be in less danger for now, but it doesn’t stop Yahoo from trolling other companies with its vague social networking and advertising patents.

What Was The First Smartphone?

Media_httpwwwhowtogee_icinf

If you imagine the first smartphone–like its predecessor the regular cellular phone–to be a monstrous and monochromatic block of plastic, you’d be correct. In 1992 IBM showcased the IBM Simon at the 1992 COMDEX (Computer Dealers’ Exhibition); in doing so they introduced the world to the first smartphone and it was just the kind of enormous brick one would expect from the first phone/computer mashup.

IBM working on electric car battery that could get up to 500 miles

Media_httpcdndigitalt_mnfkt

IBM has recently set plans to refine and develop battery technology that would allow electric cars to measure ranges of up to 500 miles on a single charge.

It’s no secret that there are many criticisms levied towards electric vehicles (EVs). While some contain more validity than others, one of the more relevant issues concerning EVs centers on range anxiety and the ability of an electric car to get you to your final destination. According to an article in NewScientist, IBM is looking to address and solve the limited range issue by pioneering new battery technology that may allow for extended ranges of up to 500 miles – pushing EVs into a range where they would be able to compete with most gas-powered cars.

The future of data storage - infographic

Data storage has long been a function of Moore's Law. But researchers at IBM say it's time to throw that equation out the window and start from the atomic level rather than waiting for the limits of physics to be halted at the same place.
