After Its Worst Quarter In 8 Years, IBM Might Sell Its Server Business

Media_httpstatic1busi_vnbfd

On the same day that IBM posted one of its worst quarters in eight years — at least according to this analyst — word leaked that it might be trying to sell its x86 server business to China's Lenovo Group.

The news first broke yesterday by Kevin McLaughlin at CRN and today CRN's Joseph Kovar vaguely confirmed that Lenovo was in "preliminary talks," with somebody, though Lenovo wouldn't say it was IBM...

Torrent Site Pirate Bay Claims To Have Moved Servers To North Korea

Media_httpstatic4busi_uzypl

The Pirate Bay, a popular bit torrent website, is claiming they've found a new source of refuge: the "hermit kingdom" North Korea.

Various international litigators have chased The Pirate Bay all around the globe, insisting they cease and desist aiding anonymous internet users seeking cheap access to high-end, pirated content.

From Torrentfreak:

Last week the Swedish Pirate Party was forced to shut down its routing services to The Pirate Bay. The Party and its leaders took this difficult decision after they were threatened with a lawsuit by a local anti-piracy group.

Piratebay and the Swedish Pirate Party are only loosely affiliated — they share political goals — but the Piratebay website does not represent the party, and vice versa.

The Pirate Bay says they've been offered "virtual asylum," but haven't taken it yet. Nonetheless, they say they are using the North Korean network to connect to the rest of the globe.

Media_httpstatic6busi_aymdl

Today Google lifted the veil off its massive and beautiful data centers around the world.

Data centers are typically shrouded in secrecy because they are the brains behind tech companies.

Google has been working on building its data centers for over 10 years. The search giant's centers are efficient, take advantage of renewable energy, and are as environmentally friendly as possible.

The following tour is a glimpse inside a few of Google's data centers, which it calls the "physical internet".

GoDaddy's DNS Servers Go Down, Taking Thousands of Sites With It

Media_http4mshcdncomw_dkckl

GoDaddy, the world’s largest domain registrar and one of the biggest web hosts, is experiencing major downtime.

The main GoDaddy.com domain is unreachable and websites hosted by GoDaddy are also down. The more problematic part is that any domain registered with GoDaddy that uses its nameservers and DNS records are also down. That means that even if you host your site elsewhere, using GoDaddy for DNS means it is inaccessible.

Dell begins test deployment of ARM-based Copper servers

Media_httpwwwblogcdnc_gcxah

Back in February, Dell revealed its intentions to enter the ARM server field. Today, the company announced that it is shipping ARM-based Copper servers to a limited number of customers. Copper is lower power than x86 servers, and Dell thinks this makes it a good fit for energy-intensive platforms such as Hadoop. In that same vein, the company views Copper as a cost-effective option that can be used for light workloads and for testing performance. In addition to deploying its new servers to select clients, Dell will be looking to the open source community for help in further developing its ARM system (the platform currently runs Linux). No word on when Copper will move beyond the testing phase.
