Marketing Yourself as a Designer is All About Making Stuff
It seems that too often great designers get lost in the mix simply because they don’t take the time to market themselves well. I mean let’s face it, most designers — especially those of us working independently/freelance — find ourselves continually juggling the roles of accountant, salesperson, and marketer, and rarely do we find the energy or resources to really develop big marketing strategies after all of our other tasks are done. And, while many do just fine with personal web portfolios, growing competition is making getting noticed harder and harder.
But, this stuff — marketing ourselves and getting our name out there — is really important for business.
And while self-marketing efforts may sometimes seem like a waste of time — because we want to spend our days actually designing and making things — it’s the difference between an unending flow, or a trickle, of design projects.
Throughout this article, we’ll discuss a few approaches to creating things that can help build your swag in the design sphere, and maybe even get you a few clients along the way...

Ten Tips For Building A Better Design Portfolio
Any creative individual will want to showcase their work in some form on a website. Its purpose can be merely a testing ground for mini projects or act as a platform to gain exposure and client work.
Often when a potential client visits your website, they know nothing about you personally, it is highly likely they will quickly judge your capabilities and personality from what they are presented with on arrival at your portfolio.
I know many designers who are very busy and rarely get a chance to work on their own portfolio, least of all keep it updated.
Unfortunately to an prospective client they will judge you solely based on what they see in your portfolio meaning you are only as good as what your portfolio is displaying.
A potential client who is browsing your site, would be looking to see where you can add value to their product or business needs, if what they see fails to impress them they will quickly bounce of your site and on to another and you will have lost business.

20 Awesome Web Designer Portfolio Websites
We can easily divide the web designer portfolio websites into two types. First is in which a designer tries to create an outstanding website with awesome looks and a super code. While the second type is and which I personally prefer, is where the designer goes for a minimalist and clean design so that the user’s eye is not distracted by the design itself and can focus more on the portfolio items. A designer’s portfolio is the biggest tool he has for marketing his services, and with the job market getting more competitive with each passing day you should make sure that once a client reaches your portfolio and takes a look at it he hires your services.

How to Craft Your Portfolio to Your Target Market
Your portfolio may be the first introduction potential clients have to you: it tells them what type of projects you do well at and what kind of work you want to land — even if that’s not the message you intended to convey. At the most basic level, the people who view your portfolio will assume that you don’t do anything beyond what is included in that portfolio.
As a client gets to know you, he may ask if you take on projects further outside the realm of your portfolio, but it’s rare that any client will want to try something far beyond your portfolio’s limitations the first time you work together.
It’s crucial that you craft your portfolio with this fact in mind. You need to focus in on the type of work you want to land and showcase your abilities, which means first, you’ve got to figure out what type of projects both appeal to you and will be valuable for your clients.
